Do you find yourself hunting for that perfect retro wallpaper? Is barkcloth is the only fabric allowed in your mid century home? A quick look online drums up some cool barkcloth designs in a wide range of sizes and prices. The most popular (and expensive) are the curtains. Vintage wallpaper is even harder to find in quantities - and when someone uncovers rolls and rolls of the same super-cool 1950s wallpaper from the depths of Oma's house - the prices are out of this world.

What's a thrifty gal to do? Find a company that makes retro wallpaper and barkcloth! Indeed, I try to be a 'vintage-vegan' (only real vintage thank you very much), but in this case I'll make an exception. The reproductions are from original 1950s - 70s designs. The cloth is actually - wait for it - barkcloth. The company? Melinamade You're Welcome.

Vintage Lingerie Lucie Ann Claire Sandra, A Rare Look

Not Too Much, Says Lucie Ann a rare LOOK into the infamous Lucie Ann of Lucie Ann Claire Sandra, Beverly Hills.

Upon my extensive search of the infamous Lucie Ann Onderwyzer, famous designer for Lucie Ann, Lucie Ann for Claire Sandra Beverly Hills.

Lucie Onderwyzer, 75, founder of Lucie Ann Lingerie of Beverly Hills, a firm she launched in 1949 that introduced exotic colors to what was then the bland sleep wear that American women wore. With her partner, Anne Briggs, Mrs. Onderwyzer expanded her business to include lounge wear, and her clothes came to be sold at major stores across the country. She sadly passed away from complications of a stroke in 1988 in Los Angeles.

I have come across some interesting articles, this is from an early 1960's magazine or newspaper article, typed out by me word for word from an interview:

Lucie Ann's steady customers think nothing...well, not much anyway...of paying $650 for a nylon peignoir or $1,250 for a lounging costume.

"My prices begin where competitive prices end," says Lucie Ann comfortably.

A dozen years ago, in California, Belgian born Lucie Ann found herself a widow with two children to support. She had no business experience, but every soul-searching session on what to do came back to the same thing: designing and selling lingerie.
Lucie Ann, a Dresden-like graying blonde with wide brown eyes and a youthful face, explains she always had a felling for intimate apparel...the glamorous kind she had never found in shops while traveling around the world with her husband, a diamond merchant.

Lucie Ann started without a workroom, "I didn't have the nerve to have a place." She designed and draped, then carted the project to a woman who did all the seams, and on to another who appliqued.

The finished product she put in a pretty quilted box tied with a big fresh ribbon ("I like things very dainty and right") and visited movie studios. Producers' wives recommended her to friends, and Lucie Ann was on her way to the 135-employee factory in Beverly Hills and the three-quarter-million-dollar annual business she has today.

"My lack of knowledge made it cost more," she recalls. "I would never do it again, now that I know what it entails."

Later Lucie Ann decided so many people were imitating her she went about copying herself in a budget line, named the Claire Sandra collection after her 14 year old daughter. Her son is 18.

Lucie Ann ever used her own surname, Onderwyzer, because it sounds too much like underwear, a word she detests.

She feels strongly that women should choose intimate apparel with the same care as cocktail and evening wear.

"Certainly a woman's married life should be as important to her as her social life. The woman who says 'What would I do with it?' about a glamorous gown and roe probably means that her husband leaves early in the morning and at night is too tired to notice her.

"Maybe he'd wake up if she wears a lovely gown," suggest Lucie Ann with a glint in her eye. "Maybe she'd win him all over again."

WEDDING DRESS 1893

This is the wedding dress wore by Miss Anne Holms on June 13th, 1893 when she wed Alfred perfect from Orangville Ontario. The story I was told by Mrs Sykes of Thornbury ontario who gave me this garment since she was downsizing and wanted it to go to a good home. Alfred Perfect was a mining engineer and a Medical Doctor. The two met in Quatemala Mexico where Alfred was working for a mining company. Their marriage took place in Laredo texas.
After some time in Mexico the couple had a son and shortly thereafter returned to Toronto where Alfred opened his medical Practice in Parkdale area near High park which at that time was a very affluent area of Toronto on the shores of Lake ontario.
When I took the box which contained this dress at the bottom was their marriage license and stuck on top to the box was a page from Dr. Perfects prescription book.
Note the marriage license which gives the instructions for the duties of the husband and wife.

I hope that all my friend who are vintage lovers as I am enjoy the stories of the garments which are pieces of our history. I often see find myself reading into the stories and wish that the garment to speak to me for what a tale they could tell. I see the age of the bride and what brought a single lady to Quatemala from small town Ontario back in the 1800?????

The story goes...approximately, 7 or 8 years ago, I sold a beautiful vintage Lady Duff nightgown negligee to a collector, and in return it is featured in this book. As an owner of a an online vintage clothing company, my world is virtually virtual. My gigabytes are my highway to customers and my storefront is my Homepage. So I've become more and more intrigued with the pop-up shops concept in North America.

I've toyed with the idea of a business with brick and mortar, putting down permanent roots to a homebase where my interactions would be you in the flesh, not just you in an email.

On the other hand, I've become more intrigued with a best of both worlds solution. There is an increase in popularity of pop-up vintage shops for people who have a passion for vintage clothing and accessories who wish to set up temporary displays of their merchandise. This allows for low overhead costs and each event can be treated as a joyful celebration as opposed to the potential tedium of hanging about waiting for that next person to walk through my door. Some people plan for monthly pop-up shops, allowing for that build-up of excitement among their friends and past customers.

Right now I'm considering all options. I am as always thankful for your business and continued interest. I love what I do and being completely immersed in my vintage and retro world. Vintage Shoes & Bags for Every Day

Lots of folks think "special occasion" when they think about wearing vintage--party dresses and beaded bags or clutches to go with them, opera coats, Kentucky Derby hats, vintage wedding gowns, Springolators for Viva Las Vegas, and so on. But working vintage into your everyday wardrobe is a breeze with bags and shoes. I never go out of the house without a vintage shoulder bag--they're all I carry for day use, especially since the last contemporary bag I bought (leather and retailing at over $100) looked like a drowned rat six months after I got it. It makes economic sense, too. You can buy two or three, maybe more, vintage Coach bags, for example, for the price of one new one. Or, probably eight to 10 off-brand, but high-quality, bags for the price of almost any new designer piece.

Oh, and don't get me started on shoes.... For what gals pay today for a pair of good faux leather shoes, you can get a great pair of real leather, comfortable shoes in sizes that really fit your feet! None of this "you can only get Narrow, Medium, or Wide in one shoe" business. You have medium-width feet but narrow heels, like me? Then buy a vintage pair of shoes in a "B" foot with an "A" heel, or an "A" foot and an "AA" heel. I have to put heel pads in almost every pair of shoes I buy new, but when I get the right size in a vintage shoe, it fits like the proverbial glove.

From the classic Kelly bag to cute wicker bags, and from a 1950s' pair of heels to 60s' chunky-heeled pumps, you can find find vintage styles perfect for accenting suits, dresses, skirts, and slacks and for wearing every day. Vintage is not just for special occasions!

The Beauty of 1920s Lingerie

I love, love, love lingerie. So my excitement is growing with my huge collection that I recently acquired. This beautiful black silk 1920s envelope chemise is delicate, sexy and beautiful.

1920s lingerie needed to change to accommodate the shorter dress styles. The envelope chemise (a.k.a. camiknickers) showed up around 1910 and is what we may call today, the teddy. A one piece undergarment which is a combination of a camisole and panties - typically looser and will attach at the crotch. No need to wear anything else :-) Ahh, imagine the freedom from corsets if you were a gal in the 1920s!

Petite Point Handbags - trophies of achievement

These beautiful handbags have a hidden story to tell. After retiring I decided to join a fraternal group of women called "The order of The Eastern Star. This is a benevolent group attached to the Masonic Lodge. After joining I found that many of the older women carried a handbag like these with great pride when she visited other chapters. Having inquired as to why so many ladies had this style purse I was informed that in the late 70 and early 80's any women who achieved a certain level of proficiency and reached the level of a District Deputy Grand Matron she was awarded with one of these purses. The custom has long gone by the wayside due to the cost and the availability to have them crafted.

I have a great collection of vintage keepsakes and I want to share them with you. My first post on this blog is a great vintage wedding dress of cream silk. The dress is sleeveless with a sort of smoking just below the hip area and the three layers of gathered fringe The original Lyle stocking remain with the dress but the veil shown is not original. Over the years the dress was re-worn and some vintage flowers are were hand sewn to the dress. The picture of the bride and the dress were given to me by Mrs. Dorothy Russell of Clarksburg Ontario

Celebrate New Year's Eve in (Vintage) Style!

We of vintage age remember the days when our parents, and then, later, we ourselves, would go out on the town for New Year's Eve. That meant getting "dressed to the nines" and going out for dinner and a party afterwards. Even the most casual of restaurant dinners or a typical house party called for dressing up. Short dresses, maxi skirts, or evening slacks were standard fare for those events. And then there were the formal galas, held at fancy ballrooms or the most elegant restaurants in town. Ladies in evening gowns and their finest jewelry, men in formal suits or tuxedos, an orchestra to which to dance....

I remember my mom and her friends breaking out their fancy stoles or wraps, beaded and sequined clutch bags, and dressiest heels. My sister and I were in awe of how lovely they looked and how their dresses "swished" as they danced out the door on their way out for the night. And, when we were older, we would get dressed up and go out as well. Although the "age of casual" was approaching even then, we women would wear cocktail dresses or casual long dresses, and the men would wear sports jackets with ties. Dinner and dancing were still standard entertainment, then we would do the rounds of the house parties, at which you almost never would find anyone wearing jeans. Can you imagine that!

Alas, those indeed were the days.... However, there are still parties and dinners to attend on New Year's Eve, and you don't have to go casual as most everyone these days does. Break out a vintage dress or gown, carry a dressy vintage bag, or wear some stunning vintage jewelry--be as bold or as subtle as you wish. No matter whether you dress in vintage or accessorize with it, you'll feel great and look great--and we're sure you'll get lots of compliments and admiring looks!

Vintage Seekers' Fine Jewellery section has this week welcomed some new additions in the form of stunning vintage engagement rings.

A vintage ring given as an engagement ring has a meaning and stock behind it far deeper than simply a beautiful piece of jewellery.

Rich in history and romance, one can imagine the couples from times past who exchanged the rings before you; their love stories and the secrets behind it. Testament to the enduring nature of gemstones, vintage rings are symbolic of permanence and uniqueness - Two things any couple aspire to.

Circa 1930, this ruby and diamond ring is of English origin. The central trapeze cut diamond, which weighs around 1ct, is surrounded by a calibre cut ruby and diamond border.

By Bailey Banks & Biddle, a leading American jeweller, this 1930s diamond ring is mounted in engraved platinum bearing the inscription BB&B.

A vintage 1920s art deco ruby and diamond ring mounted in platinum, thought to be from around 1925.

This 1930s onyx and diamond half hoop ring is mounted in Platinum, and believed to be of American origin.

Of course, these beautiful pieces could also be given as eternity rings, birthday or anniversary gifts.

Newly added to Vintage Seekers is a collection of original 1960s fashion portraits by the seminal photographer Ronald Falloon, a contemporary of renowned photographers John French and David Bailey.

Originally a music student at Heidelberg University, Falloon was encouraged to pursue photography after his raw talent was recognized during a summer placement in Cannes. He went on to work for French, eventually shooting all of the same models and celebrities as his mentor.

The collection consists of both black & white and colour photographs, all signed and numbered according to their edition. Each print offers the buyer the opportunity to own a rare piece of vintage memorabilia.

The collection is an intriguing symbiosis of the fashion and artistic flair for which the 1960s are famed. Truly capturing the zeitgeist of that era, it includes shots of a typically sultry Twiggy in her 'Bambi-eyes-and-pixie-crop' heyday, snapped in the surroundings of her Ladbroke Grove flat. Two striking photographs of Jean Shrimpton, widely regarded as one of the first supermodels, reveal an altogether more vulnerable side to this icon of the ‘swinging sixties’.

The remainder of the collection is composed of fashion models sporting the likes of Biba and Mary Quant, those stalwarts of 1960s fashion design. All of the images subtly evoke the cutting-edge nature of the decade.

Liz Taylor Couture Auction Sets Fashion Record

The record-breaking $115 million realized for Elizabeth Taylor's famous jewels didn't come as much as a surprise as the prices realized for her clothing. All of the 67 lots sold, most beating their high estimates and raising $2.6 million for Taylor's AIDS foundation (10 times the estimated total.)

The priciest item was a 1968 Christian Dior gown of beaded silver brocade with a matching purse. It had an estimate of $6,000 but fetched a whopping $362,500. Two other items soared past the $100,000 mark: a Chanel ball gown and cape with shoes and matching bag ($134,500) and a Gianni Versace bolero jacket, beaded with portraits of Taylor in her famous roles ($128,500).

Legendary fashion leader/industry consultant Fern Mallis, who attended the auction, said, "Vintage clothing is like buying art these days. It will only increase in value.”

Vintage Seekers currently has on sale an original piece of movie memorabilia from the 1954 motion picture Sabrina - A costume sketch for its leading lady Audrey Hepburn by the prolific costume designer Edith Head. Sabrina is the classic tale of a working class ugly-duckling transformed into sophisticated swan, ultimately winning the man of her dreams. This watercolour sketch onto paper has Hepburn donning a stunning black ballroom gown with full skirt and bow-strap detailing.

Oft-dubbed 'the Fairest Lady of All', Hepburn's status is cemented as a film and fashion icon, due in part to Head's simple and elegant design trademark. Indeed, Head is famed for her extensive consultation with the actresses with whom she dressed and designed for.

Head's own career is worthy of film plot material. Starting out as a French teacher, she began teaching art having been motivated by its higher salary in spite of only having her rudimentary high-school art class experience. By some bizarre stroke of luck she was hired by Paramount Pictures in 1924 as a costume sketch artist and went on to receive eight Academy Awards for Best Costume Design, Sabrina being one of them, from a total of 35 nominations. Her unparalleled success is rendered all the more incredible by her eventual admission that she had borrowed a friend's sketches for her interview. Head designed for many of the silver screen's greats - Grace Kelly, Ginger Rogers, Bette Davis and Elizabeth Taylor.

This piece is made even more desirable by the fact that it bears Head's signature in the lower left corner, and comes framed; A must-have for vintage film and fashion buffs alike.

Dior & the LBD From Vintage Seeekers

“You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it to almost any occasion. A little black frock is essential to a woman’s wardrobe.” ‘Christian Dior’, 1954

A fashion stalwart and sartorial blank canvas, the LBD’s eminent versatility has seen it adapted and reincarnated subject to the popular silhouettes and trends of the time. This exclusive display of LBDs charts the evolution of the iconic garment within one illustrious fashion house – Dior.

Although Coco Chanel is credited as the original 20th century pioneer of the LBD – she wore a slash-necked crepe-de-chine number on the front cover of Vogue in 1926 – Christian Dior resurrected the garment in the post-war years as part of his legendary ‘New Look’ collection of 1947 and it became an integral part of his Maison’s repertoire.

The first dress in the display showcases all the hallmarks of the New Look: the nipped-in, internally boned waist and full skirt reconstructs an hourglass silhouette, while generous quantities of luxurious fabric marks a return to glamour and femininity after years of wartime austerity. Dior’s inspiration here is the notion of woman as a flower, with the delicate, sculpted torso as the stamen poised above many-layered ‘petals’ of skirting.

Next we have a transitional piece from the mid 50s, which still references the New Look silhouette with its neat waistline but simultaneously looks towards the future of slinkier LBDs. Created under license for the wealthy tourist market in North Africa, it was produced for Dior Casablanca.

After Christian Dior’s death in 1957, the 21-year-old Yves Saint Laurent was promoted from Head Assistant to Artistic Director. His first few collections, which retained Dior’s scrupulous attention to detail and perfect proportions yet rendered them lighter and more wearable, saw him feted as a natural and worthy heir to his mentor. This 1959 velvet dress epitomises Saint Laurent’s characteristic dynamism and sculptural approach to tailoring, pairing contrasting textures and an unconventional bandeau bust line.

It’s hard to believe that such creations were not well received, but by the end of the decade Saint Laurent’s designs had supposedly become too daringly avant-garde, influenced by the Beat Look popular in Left Bank cafés and jazz clubs. In late 1960, Dior bosses ousted him in favour of Marc Bohan.

If Dior was the mature designer who led by example and YSL pushed the boundaries, then Bohan was the most commercial. He picked up on the modernist heritage of the label, channelling Dior’s original recipe for style with the exaggerated hourglass silhouette, yet disarticulated this so as to incorporate what the public wanted and reacted to the work of his contemporaries, particularly Balenciaga, Mary Quant and André Courrèges. The dramatic slit neckline and cap sleeves in the final dress in our display show the masterful balance he managed to strike between tradition and modernity.

Shaggy Faux Fur Shawl to Crochet

I know that I blogged this luscious shawl when I had it listed, but it's been a couple of years ago and I can't find it now. Soooooooo I really think it bears repeating, since I have found the crochet pattern to make this lovely. That was the question I received numerous times while I had it listed, and before it went to a new and loving home.

As you can see, the one I had wasn't quite as shaggy and fluffy as the one in the photo, but that is due to the type yarn that was used. I do believe that the maker can do what they wish and have it extremely full or less so.

1971 Revisited -- The Hippie Peasant Dress

When I found this pattern in my stash the other day it brought back so many memories...... The summer and fall of 1971. I had this dress and wore it to death....literally, until it was a rag.

It was so comfortable and appropriate to wear anywhere at anytime of the day.

Inspirational Antique Clothing and Accessories

Noble Savage Vintage loves antique clothing as well as vintage. While some can be gently worn from time to time without too much concern, they really make lovely decorative collectible items for the home or shop. The details and craftsmanship are both unmatched in most of todays clothing and can be quite inspirational as well. I don't believe I've shared my collectible pieces in a while and with the Holidays coming I thought this might be a fun time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

*The first is a Georgian Hair necklace with a cross pendant.

*The second is a lovely cotton batiste two piece dress, (a waist and skirt). Fabulous for a wedding.

*The two pigeon bodices are both Edwardian and in remarkable condition.

*The fifth is a fabulous beaded Edwardian capelet. (One of my personal favorites.)

*Last but not least is a wonderful Edwardian dress with outstanding embroidered lace and beading details.

My Obsession with Vintage Eyewear

Hello! This is my first blog post about vintage eyewear.

I have had a crush/obsession with 50s Cat Eyes since I was 12 years old. That is when I got my first pair of Tura Cat Eye Glasses. They were so amazing and ornate. I loved looking at them on me, my dog, and all of my friends (I'll post some pictures of my dog in them later). I had never seen anything so amazing. I felt like a movie star with them on and wanted to wear them everywhere. Now that I'm all grown up, I have an Etsy Shop full of vintage eyewear. Many of them are the beloved cat eyes. Today I am featuring two pair of vintage cat eye glasses.

The first pair are French Pin-Up Girl Style Cat Eyes from the 50s. I love the cut out designs. You can see the layers of color black, white and clear in the cut out designs. They are just beautiful! These are really well made and in perfect condition. You can find them here!

This pair of 50s sunglasses is so great! I love the colors, and the lenses are non prescription so they are ready to wear now! They are in amazing condition for 60 years of age and are so Mad Men! They can be found here!
