Day 28: In My Little Black Dress

ABOUT THE OUTFIT

SCARF: The Vintage Scarf

ABOUT THE PIECE: Gorgeous red, brown, green and purple long floral scarf. This style is great to wear around your neck or tie around your waist. I wore it in a pretty traditional style today. The soft material feels like silk and the edge is hand rolled and trimmed in red. The scarf measure 54”x10” and is available online at The Vintage Scarf for just $19.99. Check out their website to see the beautiful variety of vintage scarves they have available. Love their tagline, Nobody AGES As Good As The Vintage Scarf.

The Art Of Haggling

In the antique world, the art of haggling comes with the territory. "Is that the best you can do?" is often the first question that begins the gentle duel.

In many parts of the world, haggling is expected no matter what the purchase. In North America, it is often limited to big-ticket items such as jewelry and automobiles. However, it has quickly become the norm during our recession and is likely to remain a permanent part of the landscape even after sales recover. As a commenter on the Fashionista.com blog put it, “Haggling is the new black.”

America’s Research Group found in a survey taken earlier this year that 72% of consumers tried to better the price tag in the past year—historically, less than a third had done so. What’s more remarkable is that 80% of the time, they succeeded in paying less than the ticketed amount.

This is an advantage for the smaller or specialty store businesses. Wal-Mart and other big-box retailers do not have the leverage to offer on-the-spot pricing. It's David vs Goliath and we're doing very well thank you.

So next time you think you can not afford that item in the shop window you are drooling over, think again and polish your haggling skills.

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Designer Dresses

New this week at Couture Allure - items from three French couturiers and some wonderful party dresses.

French couturier#1, a 1990's velvet and silk chiffon cocktail dress by Jean-Louis Scherrer. Floating drapes hang from the shoulders down the back.

French couturier #2, a 1970's vibrant orange silk suit by Givenchy. I guarantee you'll be noticed in this suit!

French couturier #3, a 1980's dress by Grès Boutique in black silk faille. A blouson bodice with deep dolman sleeves over a slim skirt defines 80's style. Dresses by Mme. Grès are nearly impossible to find anymore, so this is a rare treat indeed!

This 1970's black evening gown has a halter neckline and is trimmed with authentic black fox fur down the skirt front and along the hem.

From the 1950's, this strapless taffeta party dress by Kay Selig goes from this......

......to this! The sweet little shrug jacket attaches with 4 snaps under the front of the strapless bodice. How cool is that?

Vintage women Wool Yellow Mustard Suit France Odys ST Joseph LG size 16

The label is shown above. I have not been able to find out anything about St. Joseph? Does anyone know about odys-de-paris?
The top is stained. I dry cleaned the top, but the stain remains. A pretty brooch, a scarf, a different blouse, or make a blouse to match the stain one would be very fashionable. The yellow mustard color and wool pattern of the suit is very pretty. It reminds me of the suit Mrs. Obama wore walking and waving to the people.
This pretty suit is listed in vickysplace1 Ioffer store. Click on the title to check the listing. The listing has more detail and pictures of the suit.
If anyone can give me additional information about the clothing line or age of the suit, I would greatly appreciate such a jester.

Isabella's Vintage ~ The Vintage Babydoll Nightie

The dog days of summer are here but you can be a pussycat in one of these cuties. After a pleasant but mild summer here on the east coast it has finally warmed up a bit. Try one of these babydoll nighties to accommodate the warmer evenings. Stay cool and look amazing all at the same time. Isn't that what we all want ??

1. A 70's Babydoll which is open in front & ties only at the bust in a Beautiful shade of Amethyst.

2. A 1960's cutie done in Floral Chiffon.

3. A 60's Erika McGowan Babydoll with Butterfly Appliques.

4. An 80's Undercover Wear Babydoll in Chocolate & Black.

An Honorable Mention ~ not a vintage item but oh so sexy !
A Modern Victoria's Secret Babydoll in spicy Red Mesh & Lace.

If you have never considered vintage lingerie before you really should check out the quality of vintage pieces. We have a large selection here at Isabella's Vintage as well as vintage clothing selections. There are several other reputable sellers online to chose from so be sure to take a peek sometime. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Enjoy the rest of your summer !

E.S. in the WSJ: Recycle LACMA and Vintage Fashion

"We were asked to give our thoughts about Recycle LACMA, a project by a Los Angeles artist to deconstruct vintage clothing sold off by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. We first discussed our ethical objections to the project in July.

Here’s what we had to say now to the WSJ:
Some vintage clothing collectors liken “Recycle Lacma” to vandalism. M.J. Prest, editor in chief of “Ethical Style,” a Web site about recycling and design, says she finds it offensive. “I see it as ruining something that had its own integrity,” she says. “You sort of believe when somebody gives something to a museum, they’re doing it so it would be preserved.”

Our chief complaint is that the art project takes museum-quality vintage and turns it into — pardon the expression — a bunch of useless crap.
The John Anthony fur coat pictured above was nearly 40 years old and in pristine condition before it was made into a Halloween costume sized for an infant. That’s a coat that was built to last decades, and now it’s something that can be worn once (how many growing kids wear the same costume two years in a row?).

So while we respect the artistic process, we argue that what this is cannot be called recycling.
What do you think? Vintage vandalism or is all fair in love and art?
