What Happens When VagaBonds Meet...

The lovely people at Scallywag & Vagabond, a wonderful news site focused on popular culture, the arts & fashion came and spent the afternoon with yours truly at VagaBondnyc.com and picked our brains about what we think about the world of vintage, fashion and lifestyles.

About Vnyc, Scallwag & Vagabond brilliantly noted "Current and interesting, their styles span several past decades and, with the reverent, giggling spirit of Vagabond, manage to invent for themselves a quality of newness within their gem-like rags."

Le Jour de la Sirène: A Fashion Happening Fit for Film

Submitted by - Zeva Bellel, Founder & Editor of - 'Paris By Appointment Only'™

"At high noon the first Wednesday of each month a series of sirens rings throughout Paris to test the city’s emergency warning system. Startling at first, the practice grounds you in the present—at that very moment you know exactly where and when you are. The sound is also a haunting blast from the past (it’s impossible not to think of curfews and distress alarms when you hear it). For those in the know, the signal has another sense entirely: it’s a stirring reminder to attend Jacques Fivel’s monthly fashion happening, Le Jour de la Sirène (The day of the siren), later on that evening."

Vintage Earrings

Vintage earrings are so much fun to own!

Not only do vintage earrings have historical history, you most likely will never experience being in the same room with someone wearing your earrings.
When you purchase vintage jewelry and wear it, you are displaying historical wearable art and each piece has a story to tell, from the use of materials, the design, to the era it was crafted in and its influence.
One beautiful example of earrings from the 1950s is this designers use of crystal beads to make cluster earrings. When Dr. H. Schmied discovered the method of apply a special coating to the crystals which produced colors of the rainbow was Aurora Borealis (AB) born. However it was not until 1955 that Manfred Swarvoski had the coating perfected for use. Working closely with Christian Dior, who was the first to have access to the stone that fired rainbow colors. This pair of earrings are coated with AB and are not only spectacular the can be worn with many different color outfits.
Vintage Designers, such as Coro, produced earrings that will remain classic's such as these simple yet elegant screw back earrings Goldtone chandelier earrings.
When the 1970s came along jewelry became bigger and some seemed to become larger than life itself. These large earrings are experiencing a revival today. One example of those larger that life earrings is this pair of chandelier earrings were worn by my mother in the 70's.

Vintage Mexican Silver Jewelry Finds from Jasne Jewels

I am still unpacking our treasures from my trip to the Northwest. It was very hard to say goodbye to friends and the incredible Puget Sound scenery. We managed to find a few wonderful pieces , like this set of two large silver bead necklaces made in the 1940's and signed by the maker, in Iguala. This first strand is 32 inches long.

The second strand in the set is sixteen inches long, with that great bold Mexican look we adore.

This is my favorite bracelet we found out west. It is eight inches long, making it a great fit for a larger wrist. I love the inset azurite and the way it is offset from the center in each of the seven disks. The bracelet was signed Nestor, with an Eagle 3 registration. Muy guapa.

Don't forget our promotion code JJ20510 of 20% off your first time purchase at Jasne Jewels. And, of course, free shipping of all our jewelry for our US and Canadian customers!

Vintage Fashion That Doesn't Add to the Deficit!

It's been said as the First Lady goes so does the nation go in the name of fashion. Michelle Obama has it all. She has a statuesque figure complimented by her beautiful skin, classic hairstyle and poise. What a pleasure it will be to dress her. Of course if I had my druthers she'd be wearing mostly vintage.

Of course a First Lady has no end of occasions to dress for and the fashion world will be keeping a close eye on what First Lady Michelle Obama decides to wear. I had a great time choosing some wonderful vintage fashions that are guaranteeed to make the most of our First Lady's fabulous figure without adding to the national deficit!

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Designer Dresses

New at Couture Allure this week are several great vintage party dresses. We've also added lots of new things not shown here, but you can find them under the What's New tab at our site. There are a few things I wanted to show you today, including a Lilli Ann suit and a Hanae Mori couture dress, but they've sold already. Are you checking the Couture Allure website frequently for updates? We list new items 2-3 times a week!

Remember the Rosalie Macrini dress from last week? It is now sold, but this vintage 1950's cream satin strapless dress by Fred Perlberg comes from the same estate. AND it is new, old stock with the original tag still attached!

Thierry Mugler is hailed as one of the most important designers from the 1980's. This vintage Mugler dress is fashioned from an unusual combination of brown and purple gabardine.

This vintage late 1960's mini dress sparkles with lots of metallic gold thread, huge rhinestones, and beads. The unusual cut-away armholes take this dress over-the-top!

Black velvet is ruched at the center front and forms a fitted bodice with dropped waist on this 1950's party dress. That satin skirt is a full circle when laid flat.

If you march to a different drummer and are always looking for something different to wear, I've got just the thing. This vintage 60's cocktail coat is fashioned of metallic silver cord that has been sewn into a lacy openwork design.
When perusing vintage magazines, I sometimes come across designers that I've never heard of. This dress is by Lisa Meril, an unsung maker of high-end dresses in the 1960's and 70's. Lisa Meril dresses were featured in Vogue, and sold for beaucoup bucks back then. This one, from the late 1960's is mini in length and comes with a matching scarf. I love the silk burnout fabric.

Belle du Jour...maturity and pink...

oh yes..........

.....when Catherine Deneuve appeared in the 1967 Luis Bunel French film, Belle du Jour, the clothes made the ladies sigh......
Not only was her wardrobe designed by Yves Saint Laurent....but master shoemaker Roger Vivier designed her shoes.......

The Andrew Geller pumps in brown alligator have a big button detail on the toe that is so inspired by, most likely, the Vivier pilgrim pumps....these are in my etsy shop....
Andrew Geller was a high-end shoemaker and these likely came from Nordstrom...back in the day...

here's a lovely blog post from www.unefemme.net
that discusses the Pilgrim buckle shoe and well, the blog itself is on my burgeoning blogroll of sites that discuss um...
the persons of maturity and wisdom...
oh yes. Life after 50 is so much better for so many reasons.....
a sense of who you are...many illusions have died and a peaceful soul begins to grow..
Wow!
that was pretty new-agey...
but wisdom is comforting...and so are lower heels.
Leave the stilettos to the young girls looking for love in all the wrong places...

and....This week in my etsy shop I have a stunning Emma Domb formal, with a size 32" waist.

The dress is a confection in pink lace, long poofy princess skirt and delicately proper in a peek-a-boo sort of way.........

Inspirations and New Items!

I've always been influenced by many different decades when finding inspiration for buying and styling. The softness of the 40's, the feminine yet structured details of the 50's, the spontaneity and rebellion of the 60's, the chic and laidback styles of the 70's, and the intense strength of the 80's. But lately, the 40's and the early 70's have been speaking to me the most. So when I've been out choosing items for my store it's been showing. Here are the latest styles I've picked up, I hope you love them as much as I do.  XOXO Max & Chloe Vintage

Jewelry from Calder to Skateboards

A great post from Collectors Weekly's new Daily Blog!!!

Looks like a busy summer for folks interested in antique and vintage jewelry! A quick look around the web yields some interesting finds:

Alexander Calder jewelry exhibit opens in San Diego

Calder jewelry exhibitOpening in San Diego next week, this stunning vintage jewelry exhibit features playful “wearable mini mobiles” made by sculptor Alexander Calder out of simple materials like industrial-type wire. Over his lifetime, Calder created more than 1,800 pieces of jewelry (necklaces, bracelets, earrings, brooches) from wire, brass, silver, gold, pieces of broken pottery and glass........ read full post on our Daily Blog

WallflowerVintage presents: The Sensible Gal

A level headed woman knows how to dress for the steno pool.

In 1966 one was either grounded, as this ad portrays, or was out promoting scorched bras.

vintage 1940's Evening Gown.

This vintage dress dates from 1937 to 1940, a rare survivor of a bygone age, made from rayon taffeta in brown, turquoise, orange and yellow stripe. It also has a matching Jacket with puffed sleeves.

Now while this garment has some small defects such as a pin hole in the jacket where a brooch has been and some minor stains on the dress, it still has its place in the 21st century.

A 1940's celebration day, photo shoot, walk on in a film, play or draft a pattern from the design yourself.
The dress is Bust 34" and Waist 24", unlabelled and sold as is.

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Designer Dresses

This week, I've been listing a lot of gorgeous new things at Couture Allure, including the following pieces:

This dress makes my heart stop. It's a true rare find by Rosalie Macrini. This 1950's party dress is fashioned in irridescent silk taffeta with dramatic draping and swirls.

Need a little drama in your life? How about this vintage 1960's evening gown by Bill Blass? The ostrich feathers at the hem are dyed to match the colors of the velveteen print of the gown.

These coat and dress sets fly out the door whenever we find them, so don't hesitate if you like this one. Chester Weinberg designed this vintage 1960's set in wool brocade and wool knit. The brocade print of the coat is outstanding!

I just love the kooky embroidery on this vintage 60's dress, and I know you will too. Animals are embroidered in a Tree of Life design on avocado green wool.

Pauline Trigere was known for using unusual details in her designs. This vintage 70's evening gown has an attached belt with a huge hammered brass buckle.

From the 1980's, this emerald green suede jacket by Yves St. Laurent Rive Gauche closes with the most exquisite jeweled buttons. This suede is butter soft, like velvet!

You'll find lots more new listings at Couture Allure this week! Here's a link to our What's New section of the website. Enjoy!

Teenage Idol's My How They've Changed

This whole train of thought started with an Estate Sale yesterday morning. There on the ladies dresser was an old billfold.........still in it's box and a pretty bright blue. I recognized the style from the late 50's when I first started carrying a billfold. I needed something to carry my student discount card for the movies (we didn't have SS numbers then and got into the movies for .10 instead of .25 with the card).

I of course, grabbed the box and immediately checked to see who's photo was included, because there was always a picture of someone in the picture folder.........and lo and behold the memories came flooding back. Ricky Nelson in all his young glory.

Of course the company who supplied this paper copy forged the name and didn't really know that Rick spelled his name RICKY not RICKIE. But who cares....the face is the same and the memories still as sharp........watching Ozzie and Harriet just to see what Rick was up to every week and wait for that closing song........and dancing at the Jr High dances and skating at the Skating Rink to Hello, Mary Lou.....SIGH. It does this old heart good to step back to a simpler time now and then.

For you youngsters who aren't familiar and for you more mature women who do remember, here's a bit of Ricky just for fun!

And just to prove the point, that the more things change the more they stay the same..........the beat may be a bit different and the clothes a little more suggestive...........but teen heart throbs thrive in every generation..........so for the young or the young at heart........here's the Jonas Brothers. (and even this old lady thinks they're kinda cute)

Oh yeah, and if you're still with me.....the wallet (complete with cheesy paper phot0) can be had this week on cemetarian on eBay.

Dance, Dance Betsey Johnson...Early 80's BJ

With the 80's everywhere once again, we are happy to report that Betsey Johnson & Opening Ceremony are re-creating key dance-inspired looks from Johnson's early years for a small capsule collection due next month. We at Vnyc have been collecting Johnson's earlier pieces for years because she literally helped shape the future of sportswear, we even got to meet the enigmatic Johnson last summer, working as consultants for her growing archive.

Like Norma Kamali, Johnson is a constant source of inspiration for us & designers alike. While the two have very different aesthetics, it was the haute 80's where they basically laid down all future sportswear foundations. While Kamali contributed innovative uses of sweatshirt fabrics, nylon and shoulder pads, Johnson's punkish motives like today, were more about being playful, energetic and ready-to-dance. Energy full-on, non-stop.

And it's her iconic face label era that really gets our motors running, not only because of the rarity, but also because everything boldly pronounces why Betsey Johnson is such an important, if however often overlooked figure in American fashion history. Cheeky cherry prints, spandex minis, velour body-con dresses, romantic dance-inspired gear, these are the hallmarks of a time that we not only find irresistible but also totally timeless. Check out some of Vnyc's current early 80's range of Betsey Johnson dance-inspired wear, because what's better than owning the real-original-deal?
80's Betsey Johnson Velveteen Ra-Ra Skirt-$166
80's Betsey Johnson Velveteen Body-Con Wrap Dress-$208

WallflowerVintage presents: Suzy Perette

1950s "New Look"
Late 1950s cocktail
1960s Mod look

1960s cocktail dress

If you own a Suzy Perette dress, you understand the allure of this fantastic brand. Funny, it is not the name of a real person! The Suzy Perette dress manufacturing company opened in NYC in 1949 as the answer to the post war French Dior look; high quality, lots of fabric, cinched waists, but also affordable. The company stayed in business until 1970.

We here at Wallflower Vintage have an affinity to Suzy Perette dresses of every era and are always on the look-out to find these rare delights.

Tish-U-Knit Sweaters by Leon Goldsmith

Posted on behalf of Lenore Goldsmith -

I’ve recently become aware that my grandfather was not only in the sweater making business in the 1930s and 40s, but that he himself patented a design for a sweater on February 13, 1940. The sweaters he manufactured and sold were called “Tish-U-Knit” sweaters. Each label sewn into the sweaters he made consisted of the style of the sweater, the brand name, Tish-U-Knit, and then the words “designed by Leon”. My grandfather, Leon Goldsmith, was the owner of Olympic Knitwear, which was located in the garment district of New York at 1372 Broadway.

Like many residents of New York at that time, my grandfather’s parents had come to the United States just before the turn of the century to make a better life for themselves. My grandfather started his sweater business in the mid to late 1930s.
In my research, I’ve found nothing more than that about Olympic Knitwear, but did find an excerpt from an interesting book entitled As Seen In Vogue by Daniel Delis Hill that makes reference to the Tish-U-Knit line and describes the conditions that contributed to the birth of the Tish-U-Knit sweater. With regard to the United States’ entry into WWII, he writes: An enourmous array of raw materials and manufactured goods were immediately rationed for war needs. …Under its L-85 regulation, the US War Production Board (WPB) set strict guidelines for the kinds and quantities of materials that could be used in almost every category of apparel and accessories.

The L-85 regulation restricted the hem lines of skirts, the length of suit jackets and the circumference of pant legs. However, it wasn’t the L-85 regulation, or even style that governed American designers clothing lines, it was patriotism. A Vogue editor was quoted as saying, “No law compels us to wear clothes as narrow as these. L-85 allows much more generous measurements. Of our own free will, we’re wearing them. Voluntarily, a group of American designers have pledged themselves to use less fabric than L-85 allows- in order to save every yard…” Hill goes on to explain:
American designers were so successful in creatively adapting the restrictions on fabric use that more than fifteen million yards of material were saved for the war efforts…Even before America entered the war, conservation was the guideline for daily life. From as early as 1938, imports of coal, oil, and gas began to diminish as foreign producers were invaded and ocean trade routes were disrupted. …American designers and ready to wear makers expanded the varieties and price point ranges of sweater styles. The layered twin set – a pullover and matching cardigan- became especially popular. Not only did the garments help ward off the chill of colder seasons, but they also afforded women wardrobe options for numerous looks.

It is here in Hill’s book that he illustrates the page with an ad for Tish-U-Knit sweaters from 1940 that features Judy Garland wearing one of my grandfather’s twin sets and the words “Judy Garland looks irresistibly smart”.

I share this with you not only to impart a little history behind a vintage clothing line, but to reach out to the readers and collectors of all things vintage and ask that if you should happen to have a Tish-U-Knit sweater, an ad, or any information about Olympic Knitwear, that you drop me a line and let me know. Thank you!

~Lenore

Audrey Hepburn Style...

When I hear the name "Audrey Hepburn," I automatically think of her wicked-awesome style. It was classy, sophisticated, but never too serious. So how does one get the Audrey look? Read on to find out.

Audrey Hepburn Wardrobe Staples -

Black skinny jeans

Men's button down shirt

Little black dress

Capri pants

Ballet flats

Those staples are essential to creating the perfect Audrey-inspired wardrobe. As long as you keep the basic ideas and cuts of these pieces of clothing, you can experiment with colors and patterns to make the clothes more "you."

Make-up

Audrey's makeup look was simple and pretty. You never caught her with a huge smear of fuscia powder on her cheeks. Try to go with your natural beauty instead of changing it.

Go for the dewy look. Audrey's skin looked healthy and glowing.

Try black cat-eye liner, but keep the rest of your make-up simple.

1.Simple

2. Mens wear

3. Feminine

Those three words are the keys to the Audrey Hepburn style. But whether you're wearing a flour sack or a ball gown, always conduct yourself with poise and good manners.

Win A Scarf From The Vintage Scarf

This week we added some new products to our site from independent retailers. One of those retailers is The Vintage Scarf. In honor of her debut on Workchic.com we are running a give-away! By leaving a comment on this post you can enter to win this scarf perfect for updating your work wardrobe. This long green sheer scarf can be wrapped around your neck, worn as a belt, or… Why don’t you tell us!

The Vintage Scarf is an online women’s vintage fashion clothing store, specializing in one-of-a-kind scarves. Paula Horlick is a vendor and fashion consultant for these scarves as well as the clips and buckles that accessorize them.

As you know, scarves are back in style and hugely popular this year. All of her scarves are from eras ranging from the 1930s to the 1990s and are available at an affordable price.

By buying only those items featuring top-quality craftsmanship, and personally inspecting every scarf she makes sure you will be buying quality in her shop.

You can see more scarves specifically selected for us here, vintage scarves, plus we found a few more favorites from her site. This first style is 30″ square and combines feminine birds with structured stripes. The second style echos many of the ikat and tribal prints that are popular right now. Our last choice has very traditional elements and will look chic with your boyfriend blazer and dark wash denim on Casual Fridays.

Paula was kind enough to donate the sheer green scarf for our give-away. She would style it as a belt.

How would you wear it? Leave us a comment and enter to win.

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Designer Dresses and Necklace

New at Couture Allure over the past couple of weeks are some vintage designer dresses and an unusual necklace.

I know it's French. I know it's designer. I know it dates to 1969-71. But since the label has been removed, I don't know which designer it is. What I can say is that this vintage dress is trés unusual. Each of the panels is joined with brass rings and grommets. With all that hardware, what's not to love?

pierre cardin, mod, vintage necklaceSpeaking of hardware, how about this vintage 1970's necklace by Mod designer Pierre Cardin? Signed on the back and exceedingly rare, you will never see anyone else wearing the same piece!

Isn't this vintage 50's silk gown stunning? But wait....turn around....

...the roses on the back make this a perfect wedding dress!

I love vintage cocktail dresses with matching coats. The fact that this one from the 60's is an electric green silk, makes it very current too!

bonnie cashin, cashmereThis vintage 1960's sweater and skirt set by Bonnie Cashin is 100% pure cashmere, 100% touchable luxury, and 100% fun.

Fresh charming necklaces from flotsam and jetsam

I had some fun today making necklaces from the millions of things I squirrel away...
I love birds...and hearts...so.....the first one here is named Lovebird....

The first necklace is of random pretty charms....mostly hearts...this is from my vast collection of stuff...and they are both on etsy now.

The second one is a big apple..thing...I combined it with a piece that looks kinda like an eye.....Apple of my eye......
it was inspired by a woman I saw in Seattle a few weeks ago.......she had long shiny hair, a black tshirt tucked in her faded jeans. Simple leather sandals and a stunning statement piece of jewelry...a long necklace with a large metal pendant....similar to this, but not this....She looked cool, collected and perfectly put together.

freshly listed ....

Peek into the life of a 1920s Housewife...

If you are interested in all things vintage, take a peek at the new blog from Kitsch-y-Cool Vintage. We are posting actual diary / journal postings from an Akron Ohio wife and mother written throughout the 20's - 30's. Visit us at Diary of a 1920s Housewife...

Compiled in several books and spanning many years, these diaries give a fascinating look into everyday life of a depression era family. Daily chores as cooking, cleaning, and lots and lots of sewing take on a whole new perspective. Great for researching style and culture from a by-gone era!
Enjoy!

The Red, The White, and The Blue

Just so perfect for the occasion, 70's red, white, and blue blouse. Colors that represent the American flag.

Cute peek-a-boo and just right for a cool summer night. Celebrate our country's birthday in style. Can be found at the House Of Le'Moore

Is real vintage out of style?

For over half a century, I've collected vintage clothing from many different eras, most notably the 30s, 40s and 50s. I'm pathetically addicted to collecting, even as I know the time has come to part with this outrageously vast mass of clothing. What I am discovering in my attempts to market my "true" vintage is that no one seems to want the 50's net formals, the 40's two piece gaberdine suits or even the bias cut graceful 30's gowns.

While at first dismayed, then distressed and finally outright indignant, I began to search for an answer as to why these beautiful vintage pieces were not being purchased. My only conclusion is that the clothing from these decades is TOO SMALL for the 2009 woman. Most certainly we have evolved from the tiny waisted, small bosomed, lithe bodies that wore the netted formals, gaberdine suits and fluid gowns of bygone eras. We are, in essence, several sizes UP from what we were "back when."

For a woman who lived through the 40's and 50's, I have an easy 5 point explanation as to why this has happened. Growing up in the 40s and 50s, we ate three wholesome meals a day... meals that our mothers prepared while wearing their homemade aprons and literally standing over a hot stove. Our food was for the most part organic, grown in gardens or purchased directly from the farmer's stand. It was "put up" as my mother called it, in large quantities in her hot summer kitchen, enough to take us through winter. Vegetables and fruits were abundantly canned or dried and brought forth from the root cellar as needed. We almost always had dessert, too... a cherry cobbler or apple pie prepared from the bounty in the root cellar.

Why then, you may ask, with such generous meals, were we wearing size "small" when most of us now can only dream of a 32" bust, a 22" waist and 32" hips? Consider the following....

1. We almost never snacked because our healthy three meals a
day kept us feeling satisfied.

2. We didn't know what "fast food" was until the late 50s when
that strange "pissa pie" from Italy was introduced and McDonalds
launched their first hamburger with fries.

3. Most families didn't have television so we didn't become
couch potatoes.

4. We had ONE family car which caused most of the family to WALK
everywhere even if the distance was measured in MILES.

5. Not exercising wasn't an option as we mowed the grass with push
mowers and scrubbed floors on our hands and knees. Oh, and yes,
we walked miles to school and back uphill all the way and in the
winter with icicles hanging from our eyelashes!

Oh, how I long for my small body so that I could wear my tiny net
formals, my two piece gaberdine suits and my sexy flowing 30s lingerie. In all my years of collecting, I have yet to find a plus size vintage anything. If you find one, cherish it and sell it for the highest dollar you can get because you have a true treasure.
In the meantime, I'm still hanging in with my very large collection of very small vintage. What's worse, is I'm compelled to keep adding to it.
