Fabulously Beautiful Weather & Vintage Purses From the Pacific Northwest

Wow, it's been incredibly dry and sunny on this visit to Washington state, visiting friends, eating great Thai food, and finding incredible vintage purses. We have managed to locate a great bunch of vintage handbags including this vintage snakeskin clutch, an Ostrich handbag, and a great umbrella purse, among the many others. Here's a few pics of these great treasures and a picture of a tiny, dreamy little town north of Mount Vernon I am sworn not to reveal the name..Edison (oops!).

MAN CANDY

Most of the vintage clothing & accessories on this blog are for women so here is a change of pace... some man candy!

The necktie as we know it is thought to have begun during the Thirty Years War in Europe during the 1600s. The French, always fashion forward, took note of the kerchiefs worn by the Croatian mercenaries & turned the humble neckerchief into the cravat, a word derived from the Croatian & French words for Croat, hrvati & croates. Until George Bryan "Beau" Brummell introduced a more tailored look in the early 19th century these cravats were mostly frilly & lacy. The 1920s saw the introduction of the modern tie construction which has continued until today with variations in the width & length. The mid 20th century ties are highly collectible for their amazing variety of designs.

On offer from The Spectrum, a small selection of 40s-50s NOS Arrow ties for the hepcat, swing daddy or the businessman looking to liven up his wardrobe ~

Hush Hush.......It's a Cover-up

No not a political cover-up but a swimsuit cover up. From almost the beginning of swimsuit's there have been swimsuit covers. Part for modesty, part for sun protection and part just because it made a prettier presentation.

Here are just a few actual cover ups that I have found. Some are the actual garment and some are Magazine articles and advertisements and there are even a couple of patterns for you to make your own swimsuit and cover-up.

This little organdy skirt is featured in a 1951 Holiday Magazine article 5 page Fashion spread from 1951 showing the latest in bathing suit fashions. Designers included are Tina Leser, Carolyn Schnurer, Annis Originals, Sea Nymph, Caltex, Bestlyne, Cole of California, Rose Marie Reid, Jantzen, Mabs of Hollywood, Sacony and Gantner.

Men also had their Matching sets often called Cabana Sets. Colorful vintage McGregor sportswear ad from 1948. Ad shows several different styles of sportswear for men and promotes "Sun Sets" a brilliant new color achievement in teamed water suits.

Fun Novelty Print Vintage 50s Swimsuit Cover-Up From The Lucite Box

This cotton swim cover-up is so adorable. It's from the 50s and features a print of moustached bathers, lady sunbathers and beach umbrellas. (We like the old-timey swimwear these characters from 1915 are wearing.) The short little jacket is lined in white terry cloth and has two slash pockets. It's got a cute sailor collar. It slides over your swimsuit easily as there are no closures. It looks like this has seldom if ever been worn.

Beach dress in two lengths, two piece bathing suit & hat. The sleeveless beach dress tied at shoulders is gathered to yoke and has lowered round neckline and optional purchased belt. View 1 is regular length. View 2 is above knee length. Lined, two piece bathing suit has bra top with back button closing, and shorts with elastic waistline and leg casings. The lined hat has a large brim that may be worn turned back! 1967

Back buttoned bra, dart fitted pants or shorts with center back zipper, and sleeveless, seven panel princess dress or top buttoned at back. Bra is interfaced and faced with self fabric. Back opening of dress or top and pants or shorts waistband are interfaced. Dress has applied bow at top of vent in left front seam. 1965

Vintage 70's Bright DeWeese Design Blouse Cover-up S From Glamoursurf

Vintage 70's DeWeese Design Bright print blouse top swimsuit coverup beachwear, size Small. This most likely had a matching swimsuit at one point. Nice bright all over print in shades of pink, orange, goldenrod, lavender and rust. Self fabric covered button front closure. Shirt cover up is in excellent vintage condition. No fiber content tags, we believe this to be a nylon spandex blend.

Vintage 1940s Blue Coral Terry Cloth Beach Bolero Cape

Vintage 1940s Mustard Yellow Chenille Beach Cape Large

Vintage 1940s Chenille Beach Cape w Fish Medium

Newspaper Archives show ads in 6/1939 and 8/1939. $1.95 - 5.95 Polly Prentiss beachwear 1/4 off! Tufted chenille jackets, capes, boleros and long beach coats. And this one is a BEAUTY! 3 little fish blow bubbles over waves of the ocean.

On with the gloves!

One of my favorite movie scenes is from "Gone With The Wind" Scarlett prepares for her meeting with Rhett and is desperate to make the right impression, after all she was a wealthy women, a southern belle. But that was before the war. She makes a gorgeous gown out of the velvet curtains (amazingly still intact after the devastation) and pulls on her beautiful gloves. When she arrives she is resistant to removing her gloves and Rhett notices this. The truth is revealed - her hands are work worn, her family is in ruins she appeals to him for help but was too proud to present herself any other way!

When You Inherit The Wrong Set Of Hands...

Hi -

My mother is an amazing woman. She bakes great bread and cookies, is a painter, ceramicist, makes all of her own dishes and mugs, lamps, wall sculptures, even decoupage. She also sews, and made many of our outfits when my sisters and I were growing up. Mom even plays the cello, her fingers flying up and down the strings.

I did not inherit her hands. I don't mean shape, because they aren't particularly narrow or tapered or even that special looking. I mean finesse.

I inherited my father's hands. Large, capable, and clumsy as hell. My dad built bookshelves, a doghouse, a complete dollhouse complete with electric lights and a doorbell, basic picture frames (four thin strips of wood nailed directly into the side of the canvas), and when I was a little kid, a funicular on cables over the gully behind our house. Every summer on the Jersey Shore, he'd repair things around the house and build stuff. He was also one of the greatest cooks to walk the earth.

Great, yes. But he was always smashing his hands with a hammer, dropping things, or cutting himself while chopping vegetables. When he was cooking, you'd hear a softly muttered "shit." A minute later he would have the damaged digit wrapped in a paper towel, bleeding away on our prospective dinner. At his memorial, my brother summed up my father's handyman skills: "Dad could fix a garbage disposal...with a crowbar." Finesse was not his strong suit.

What does this have to do with selling vintage clothing, you ask? Try repairing--oh, anything--when you've got hands like mine.

After my father's death, I found myself at our beach house, slamming nails into separating stairs, fixing furniture, hanging pictures (my brother took over the cooking duties). At my home I fix the furniture, set up the electronics, put up shelves.

But ask me to sew a simple, one-inch split in a seam, and you've got yourself an instantly ruined vintage dress.

Somehow, picking up a needle and thread seems to make my hands become three times their natural size. So does trying to pin anything, do up bridal buttons or hooks and eyes, or gently tug on material. There is always a loud "RRIIIIPPP" which means R.I.P. for the garment. Safety pins might as well be numchucks when I pick them up. I've tried sewing glue and other quick fixes, only to find the glue smeared everywhere (including me) except for the spot I meant to repair. This is why my listings say, "I don't sew."

Thank God Mom lives in the same city. But there's only so much stuff I can dump into her lap. She has bread in the oven.

Elisa

Where Did The Paisley Print Come From

The lacy teardrop pattern known as paisley is Indian in origin, but its name derives from a town in southern Scotland.
Paisley was a major site for the manufacture of printed cotton and wool in the 19th Century, according to the Paisley Museum in Scotland. Resembling a large comma, paisley is one of the most recognized patterns in the world. The pattern can be traced back more than 2,000 years.
The paisley design motif is also known as Cashmere, not to be confused with the woolen textile.

A floral motif called buta, which originated in the Safavid Dynasty of Persia, was adapted in India to its familiar shape and spread to Scotland when soldiers returning from the colonies brought home cashmere shawls.

From roughly 1800 to 1850, using Jacquard looms, the weavers of the town of Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, adapted the design and wove woollen shawls, hence the design is popularly known as the Paisley pattern.

The Origin Of The Polka Dot

Polka dot is a pattern consisting of dots. Polka dot patterns are quite variable: they range from a series of dots that are equally spaced and sized to a random arrangement of multicoloured dots of different sizes. Polka dots are most commonly seen on children's clothing, toys, and furniture, but they appear in a wide array of contexts. The pattern rarely appears in formal contexts, however, and is generally confined to more playful attire such as bathing suits. Occasionally white on black regularly spaced polka dots appear on more formal clothing.

While polka dots are ancient, they first became common on clothing in the late nineteenth century in Britain. At the same time polka music was extremely popular and the name was also applied to the pattern, despite no real connection between them.

There were many other “polka” items, some of which include “polka-hats” and “polka-jackets.” Most disappeared with the fad of the actual polka dance. Only the polka dot fabric pattern remained popular, and the name has been left intact over the years.

In 2006, polka dot skirts, dresses, scarves and tops became a fad in the United Kingdom. The polka dot skirts were usually pencil skirts. This started another fashion period, after which silk replaced the polka dot. The Pipettes were instrumental in bringing about this fashion trend.

Norma Kamali + Paint = Heart + Soul x Love

This dress rocks! 1980's Norma Kamali painted dress. In the store now...auction ends on Thursday. - THE FAMILY VINTAGE

(there's more to see than just the one dress....honest.)

Claire McCardell at the CFDA Awards

Weeks ago I was contacted by the lovely Tracey Ullman about a Claire McCardell dress I had sold a while back, still shown on my site's archives page. She had been asked to host the CFDA Awards and not only is a huge fan of McCardell but thought it appropriate to wear a great American designer for the event. While it had sold, I happened to remember who I sold it to AND remembered that she had contacted me about wanting to sell it herself, having decided to pare back her own vintage collection. I worked a little magic and everyone ended up happy. Customer sells dress, Tracey adds dress to her collection and dress ends up being worn to a star studded event....all the way from its humble home in Des Moines, Iowa to a celebration of America's top fashion designers on stage in New York City. A perfect ending for the perfect vintage dress.

The McCardell, as photographed by me a while back (before a crisp paper background...I cringe looking at this picture!)

And last night on Tracey, with ZAC POSEN (lightened so you can see that marvelous waist treatment, iconic McCardell)...

    * 3 oval vintage images of pretty ladies

    * A pair of black dress gloves

    * 3 dainty hankies with pink embroidery and crochet

    * A wool felt embroidered silhouette from Bucilla (not sure what that was meant to be used for, it has been embroidered)

    * A linen piece with lace on one end

    * A Black patent vinyl zipper bag - either a small purse or make-up bag.
    * The book 'Shopping For Vintage'. It has very short profiles of designers from the 1890s-1980s. Also some jewelry and handbag designers, tips on buying vintage and guides to realworld and online vintage shops and fairs. Book has artwork, no actual photos of vintage clothing.
    * And it all comes in a small vintage hatbox from Gimbels!

Yes, you get everything show above, fun little vintage stuff! A winner will be drawn on the 22nd of June.

    Bye for now, Carol

Vintage 50’s Pink & Black Half Apron

This sweet apron appears handmade. I think so because the way the paneling of the bias fit together is not perfect. All the same, very charming and lady like. This apron is made from a graphic black on white striping background that floats little lavender roses on it. The trim, pockets, and ruffles are a traditional pink. All is in excellent condition and freshly pressed. No stains at all. Deep-set pink pockets on both sides. The front waist panel measures 17”. Add the ties and the width is 4ft from tie end to tie end. The apron panel is 27”W x 21”L 408.355.0436 PST

    Floral Beehive Hat by Dayton’s

Oh my goodness…I love this fun hat. The contrast between the deep rich black velvet base and the brightly colored red and mauve flowers and the variegated greens in the leaves is positively striking! Little yellow pestles are in the center of each flower to give it an extra kick! It sits on the head straight up so that the 1 oversized flower (5” x 4”) rests on the forehead! It is truly a beautiful yet fun hat circa 50’s to 70's.The black velvet is actually wired tubing that is adhered to the mesh seen in the photos. It is wound around the mesh (which is very firm) to create the beehive look. Each leaf is wired too for shaping just right. The mesh will allow for coolness in the summer. The hat measures 7"W x 9"L 6.5"H. Dayton's was a long time family owned department store, in Minnesota, which sold out in the 1980's. They were high end, comparable to Macy's. Can’t you just see yourself at the next garden party in this fabulous hat? It would be adorable to add a little bee to this work of art. 408.355.0436 pst

The Collectors Weekly, a resource for collectors and people who love antiques and vintage items

The Collectors Weekly: Vintage Fashion, Fine Jewelry and Costume Jewelry

Blast from the past: a great flashback article, originally published in 1948, Two 18th Century New York Dresses describes the dresses worn to a ball by two prominent women in 1780. This is one of many articles from the American Collector Project, a publication from the 30's and 40's given new life in new technology on The Collectors Weekly.

The Collectors Weekly is a site to explore and learn about antiques and the art of collecting, and showcase the passion and knowledge of collectors everywhere.

For you Vintage fashion buffs, we have a great Fashion and Accessories family with eye candy to suit you up from head to toe, and to fill your mind with great reference about vintage fashion.

We feature interviews with experts like Christie Romero, who talks about collecting fine and costume jewelry, specifically focusing on the various styles, eras, materials, designers and manufacturers, and Amy Karol, who talks about her lifelong love of vintage clothing, especially vintage aprons, and how vintage designs and patterns have influenced her own sewing and writing.

We also bring you the best of eBay in over 40 fashion and jewelry related categories, updated every two hours.

"French Room" Merrival by Merrimac Felt Hat with Pheasant Feathers- 40's

French Room – The Dayton Co. Merrival Felt Hat by Merrimac with Pheasant Feathers
    http://myatticscharms.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=4607406
Elegantly stylish and very vintage, this beautiful ladies hat is a must for that retro outfit you are putting together! All markings inside the hat are as the subject states in this post and seen in the pictures. I would say the sandy beige felt is in very good shape and still holds it shape and the double rim that is merely shaped as such The Grosgrain ribbon is fine and all is clean. The bow is a bit tired and does not lie perfectly. But the feathers…the feathers are remarkably in perfectly natural condition! Multi-tone beige to brown, they curve around the side of the hat to accent the shape. The label position tells me that the front of the hat is the START of the feathers. So they wrap around your head to the right and towards the back. But some experimenting and your preference would lend it in any position. This hat is from the 40’s or 50’s. It measures 9"W X 7L X 5H. There is a 22 on the label. It will fit a medium or small. There is a hat pin hole and a hat pin included. Beautiful! 408.355.0436

Having A Vintage Sale At My Home--Thank God It's Over

    Hi, everybody -

I have to say, I am very pleased at how well my vintage sale went. Women streamed in and out of my apartment, mostly on that rainy Friday afternoon, but there were quite a few buyers in on Saturday. I unloaded a bunch of merchandise and made a lot of women very happy. That makes me very happy.

This was my front room set up for the sale on Friday, from two sides:

In the above picture, you can see the "cheap stuff" rack, where everything was $5 - $15. That rack was absolutely pillaged!

In the living room there was a large professional rack full of merchandise, as well as a costume jewelry table and a sofa loaded with handbags. David Owens, who owns a vintage store here in New York by the same name, asked his wonderful wife Linda to help me out. She was invaluable!

So now the apartment is an incredible mess, with bins and boxes everywhere. But I will do it again in September!

Once an idiot, always an idiot.

Vintage Lingerie OLD HOLLYWOOD Red Carpet Nightgown

Vintage Lingerie 30's Vintage RAYON SATIN Nightgown LONG Gown Size: L XL 40/42

Fashioned and Created by Handmade by YOLANDE

Vintage Lingerie...Epitome of TRUE OLD HOLLYWOOD MOVIE STARLET GLAMOR GOWN...Think HARLOW!

***RED CARPET WORTHY IN NEARLY FLAWLESS CONDITION***

Size Tag Reads: (the tag has missing edge, and says 40 something. I'm thinking a 40 or 42
*IMPORTANT, please see actual measurements of the garment below for accurate fitting, do not rely on the size tag*

Vintage lingerie, bringing back romance and femininity again. What an incredible find I have for your lingerie collection and a true little treasure to cherish for many years to come. The color is what I describe as ICY GRAY-BLUE (color may vary from monitor to monitor), and created in 100% HEAVY DRESSY RAYON SATIN. This has ANTIQUE ECRU LACE DESIGN with EXQUISITE EMBROIDERY PATTERN. Sweetly scalloped arm hole openings. LONG, LAVISH, FULL MERMAID SWEEP that is BIAS CUT hem and bodice and ties around the back. Vintage items are rarely flawless and most have normal to little wear, minor picks/pulls in areas or a small age discoloration spot or two etc. This particular beautiful piece has no signs of wear and *virtually flawless*, however 2 MINOR *FLAWS* if you will, one slightly larger then pinhead size spot on rear end, and you have to be looking for this to see it, and at the hemline is literally a pinhead dot, and a minor 1/2 inch scuff next to it.. seriously REALLY NOTHING TO MENTION, but I am very careful and precise. THIS IS EXQUISITE AND SUCH A RARE FIND IN THIS BEAUTIFUL CONDITION!

Here at Sweet Cherry Vintage, I offer you vintage lingerie of distinction, which is created in vintage high fashion, fabric superiority and trim extras. Vintage lingerie is created by skilled artisans of the lingerie industry, most are masterpiece's of workmanship & designed by the hand's of geniuses and stamped with the seal of quality. Treat this garment as you would your most treasured possession...if you care...it will wear and wear!

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Couture and Designer

New this week at Couture Allure are items from a little known California couturier and noted designers.

Richard Tam was a California couturier based in San Francisco. His work was considered on par with Galanos and many of his pieces now reside in museum collections. This silk brocade babydoll dress dates to about 1968.

Donald Brooks was considered a fashion leader of the 1960's and was well known for his bold graphic prints. This 1960's cotton canvas coat is an example of iconic Brooks design. Look closely....the pattern is actually peas in pods!

Another noted designer of the 60's, this time Malcolm Starr. This shimmering cocktail dress is of silk organza woven with gold metallic threads.

This 1960's cocktail set consists of a empire waisted dress with matching coat. You must go look at the back of the coat with it's gathered fullness!

This early 1960's floral wiggle dress has a bubble overskirt. Divine!

We don't normally "do" polyester double knit at Couture Allure, but I couldn't pass up this sweet 1970's set of long sleeve dress with a matching cape.

My love and passion is vintage fashion! So my collection got out of control and I decided to follow my dream and start a store. Welcome to Max & Chloe Vintage. Vintage fashions from the 30's to the 80's. I think to enjoy and make vintage fashion wearable today is to mix and appreciate from all decades. From a gorgeous High pleated skirt from the 30's to that hot wooden platforms of the 70's.

Please enjoy and shop the store and Message me with any questions, feedback, tips, just about anything at all.

I am soon going to be attending the Rosebowl Flea Market in Pasadena. If anyone has done this event please let me know anything you think could be useful. I am so nervous and excited at the same time.

Well...so there is my introduction and hello to the vintage bulletin world! Thanks for reading and please enjoy Max & Chloe Vintage.

    Having A Vintage Sale At One's Home--EEEK!

    Hi -

I have not posted here in a long time, mostly due to mundane health problems that have made it tough to be at the computer as long as I would like. In any event, I decided to have a Vintage Recessionista Sale at my NYC apartment this upcoming weekend.

    I am an idiot.

First I sent out an Evite (email invitation) to about 200 people. 4 said yes, 11 said no, the others never responded. Then I stuck it on Facebook and invited everyone in the known universe, even if they lived in Los Angeles. So far, the same 4 people have said yes.

However, this still means that I have to make dozens of price tags and signs, borrow a second clothing rack, clean the apartment (EEK!) and figure out a way to convince my paranoid husband that everyone who comes into our apartment won't steal our books. ("Look, hon, a 1971 paperback edition of John Cheever stories! It's a must-have!") I'm dreading feeling like a hostess at those dinner parties in the movies where nobody shows up.

(My apologies to whatever seller whose VBO logo I used. Pardon my syntax!)

On the bright side, it will force me to go through my inventory (again--EEEK!), wash a lot of pieces that need to be washed, and, most important, have an excuse to buy sweet snacks. I'm offering coffee, tea, and sugary stuff to the attendees.

For those of you who can't make it to New York, I have lots of stuff listed at The Mad Fashionista's Plus Size Boutique on Fashiondig, and also at Elisa's Bodacious House of Style on eBay. Tell 'em hoardmeister sent you.

And if you live in New York, dear God, RSVP!

Cute & Easy Cotton Wearables @ PoshPigVintage

I know when it gets warm out, I pretty much wear cotton exclusively. Fun and colorful printed cotton skirts from the 50s are my staple summer wear, paired with a modern tank or tee. A 50s sun dress is my choice if I have to look just slightly dressier, but still cool and comfortable. With those feelings in mind, here are some of my offerings for this week! Some are listed in my store and some are at auction, so if something catches your eye... you better check to make sure you won't miss it!

Volume Without Pads:70's Versace for Callaghan

It's more than obvious that we at Vnyc have a thing for designs from GIANNI VERSACE and a penchant for collecting CALLAGHAN, so we were more than floored when we found what think is one of favorite buys ever, this jewel toned late 70's Callaghan dress that was designed by Versace. Being such an early piece from Versace already amps up it's desirability factor, but it's the pieces sci-fi feel that truly gets our motors running. At first glance, it instantly conjured Alber Elbaz's genius Fall 2007 show for Lanvin, where creating broad shouldered volume without pads on leg-of-mutton sleeves was done with such discipline, the solution was an aerated shoulder.

This dress is what you could consider the precursor for all of that 80's volume, yet it's rich jewel tone and contrasting matte satin sleeves enrich it with an almost other-worldly superhero/princess quality, while it's streamlined and unadorned silhouette is concise and minimal at the same time. When everyone is looking at shoulders and the 80's, we love the fact that the pleating construction on the shoulders gives you that considerable amount of volume, and that the fabrication on the sleeves is so lightweight that it almost feels like paper, ultimately giving the shoulder a much more fluid exaggeration than the structure of a pad.70's CALLAGHAN by Versace Sci-Fi Jewel Tone Dress-$548
