New at Couture Allure - Vintage Dresses and Suits

New this week at Couture Allure - lots of shimmering vintage gold.

We love this vintage 60's cocktail dress with matching coat in gold brocade - and it's a generous larger size!
Another 1960's dazzler, this time in a new, old stock silk suit with genuine mink fur cuffs.

Shimmering silver silk satin jacquard is fashioned into a late 1940's dinner suit with ruffles at the hip.

The perfect early 1960's prom dress in gold brocade and silk organza.

Calling Petula Clark! I found your 1960's cocktail dress in cream crepe with babydoll lace tent overlay!

Hand-corded lace and silk tulle are lined in rose pink taffeta in this elaborate 1950's evening dress that would also work for a wedding.

Hi Everyone! A message for you and I will can get to work..

I have returned from a trip to Brazil and PURCHASED the most beautiful handcrafted ARTISAN jewelry GEMSTONES Crystals & dresses and leather work..!

The handcrafted jewels are from an artist who resides in a town of Parintins in the Amazon region of Brazil

His work was unbelievable to me, his family uses beautifully mined crystals and gemstones leathers and brass and wearable art from day to night & even in the ocean the jewelery is gorgeous all natural

If you love unique you must own one of his works of art to wear

The dresses are created by hand from the gauze WE love.. that real gauzy breezy fabric that hippies lived in during the 60s and 70s and NOW ...

His one of a kind beautiful dresses are all whip stitched and artfully pieced together he also uses beads and seashells on the dresses each one is completely different

he is my favorite Hippie seller in Leblon & Ipanema Beach, I purchased most all he had and now only 2 left!!

Urban Warrior: Another Side of the 80's

The 80's has been heavily revisited time & time again for a major part of this past decade and it's always interesting to see what particular part of the era designers feel relevant for today. We at VagaBondnyc.com are of course pleased that younger designers like Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang have steered clear of corporate boardroom chic, of the floral frivolities of the decade, instead to channel a more stremlined if not aggressive vision of strength through darker downtown themes. We at Vnyc afterall, love our girls looking "downtown."

Channel your inner downtown maven with some of our own spot-on warrior finds, from Krizia's sequined contrast bodysuit to Gianni Versace's studded boyfriend blazer, when it comes to the 80's, V got you covered.

Pictured clockwise from far left:
80's Fishnet Racer Back Singlet, 80's Valentino Snake Print Silk Blouse, 80's Krizia Contrast Bodysuit, 80's Gianni Versace Studded Blazer, Moschino Card Print Pencil Skirt, 80's Resin Triangle Earrings... all availible at VagaBondnyc.com, where shipping is always free, everywhere!

Everyone Hits a Bump in the Road

and I hit mine on Memorial Day. For those of you who use my Pattern Dating pages, don't be alarmed if you go there and find them missing. I was asked to remove the date lists because they are supposedly copyrighted. How you can copyright public domain information, I don't know, but...........I decided to take the bump in the road as an adventure and restructure the pages........so come back soon and hopefully you will find bigger and better and much more accurate information than was on there. I would receive multiple emails every week telling me the lists were wrong so, perhaps it's a good thing to do my own research instead of trusting something just because it's "published".

Thanks to everyone who supports my pages and if you want to keep really up to date on what's happening daily, sign up to follow my Facebook page........

Since I'm digging in my files .... here's a bit of Eye Candy

and one really spectacular find that is available right now on eBay.

Using The Vintage Scarf As A Vendor

I am a vendor and fashion consultant in Vintage Scarves, Clips and Buckles and am based out of Bella Vista, Arkansas. I do not have a brick and mortar shop. My shop is online.

The Vintage Scarf only buys top quality craftsmanship. I personally inspect every single scarf before it is put on my shop.

The scarves that are not put in my shop are discounted for clients to purchase in bulk. These include flaws such as a tear, rip, hole, etc..

The Vintage Scarf operates on a simple discount negotiable package and focused toward your convenience.

I would be honored to discuss how The Vintage Scarf can help boost your sales and profitability.

New Items Now Available!

We've been busy! Here is a small sampling of some new items that are now available at

A Poem By Audrey Hepburn

Below is a wonderful poem Audrey Hepburn wrote when asked to share her 'beauty tips .'

It was read at her funeral years later.

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness.
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone.
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.
Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Evening Gowns

New this week at Couture Allure - vintage evening gowns for all your formal needs!

This 1960's evening gown is completely covered in beads and sequins in pale aqua and iridescent white. From Miss Stella at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel - a posh address indeed!

This late 1930's garden party dress is fashioned from silk in a vibrant blue and pink floral print.

This 1940's evening gown with it's matching bolero jacket of rust rayon crepe is adorned with light blue silk satin and elaborate gold bullion embroidery.

Designer Luis Estevez goes wild in this early 1970's maxi dress of silk in a yellow, black, and white graphic print.

And designer Pauline Trigere goes wild in this vintage 1990's evening gown of green plaid cotton voile adorned with smoky crystal rhinestones in three sizes from small to giant.

I really need to take better pictures of this beauty. This early 1960's gold brocade gown has a tulle mermaid hem for your inner diva!

Attention Defecit Dance Shoe Disorder

I found these shoes in a dusty vintage clothing store where I dig on a regular basis here in central Pa. I've wanted a pair of vintage peep toe shoes for myself for sometime. I tried them on and they fit. Home James! There they would keep company with the others in the dance shoe corral. My justification for purchase was my upcoming trip to the Portland Blues Festival and the many dance venues and clubs where I planned to wear them...

Upon returning home I started looking at them closer. These were custom made shoes, with hand painted numbers on the inside. I can hear some very wealthy woman ordering them. "I want three and a half inch Cuban heels". Make sure you line the back of my shoe with suede so there is no rubbing. I want gold rivets every eighth of an inch across my instep. Wow. I am not worthy of these shoes. Besides, I really did not need a third pair of ballroom shoes.

I also own three pairs of tap shoes, but that is another story.

Hi To All Vintage Lovers!

Wedding Day

Today's the day, the bride to be, awakes to breakfast in bed, then slips on her hostess gown which she made herself using the vintage pattern below:

She dreamt of wearing a lovely modern wedding dress like the one below:

But, the bride to be fell in love with the yellow outfit on the pattern below and her mother came to the rescue and made the dress in a lovely ivory shade:

Her talented mother also made her own "mother of the bride outfit" using this pattern and purchased a lovely hat to match.

The day went without a hitch, and the evening reception was a success, the bride wore the lovely 1960's vintage dress below:

Trash to Treasure: Old Scarves A Scarf Coffee Table

I found this awesome idea on HGTV.com Website Trash To Treasure

A plain coffee table also serves as a piece of artwork when unique scarf is framed on top. This is a great way to preserve an old scarf or some vintage fabric. The scarf is stretched over a piece of plywood then framed with molding and a piece of clear acrylic. The molding/frame is then fastened to the table.

Awesome Idea!

Designer Norma Kamali Eyelet "Mermaid Skirt"

Fresh from the dry cleaners, this gently worn but like new Norma Kamali, is just as sweet and summery as it is hot and sexy! Made entirely of cotton white eyelet, it gathers at the knee and runs up the middle of the skirt in pleats that creates the gathered flair and taper down the back. The pictures will say it better in the link. Not a stain or snag in the eyelet anywhere. Invisible zipper makes this size 8 skin tight. The cut most likely runs small so maybe a size 6 will do well. This skirt was a couple hundred when new. http://myatticscharms.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=3850693

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Dresses

Back from vacation and a buying trip, we've got tons of vintage dresses coming your way starting with these beauties, new this week at Couture Allure:

I blogged about polka dots a couple of weeks ago, and the love for this pattern was very evident. On my buying trip, I sought out polka dots for you, and this is my personal favorite - a 1950's shirtwaist styled full skirt dress with random dots in black and brown.

Who doesn't love pink? Who doesn't love cherries? The two are combined in this 1950's full skirted cotton dress by Posh.

The original labels are gone from this 1950's party dress, but everything about it says Paris to me. Black silk organza layered over taffeta with a bell shaped skirt, ruching, and big bows. Oh la la!

This 1960's Pat Sandler evening gown is just stunning with its Creamsicle orange silk chiffon, beaded Cleopatra color, and yards and yards of floating overlay. The original owner of this gown was short - probably no more than 5' - so if you're petite, this is the gown for you!

When I came across this 1940's African print dress, I fully expected to find a label from Tina Leser or Carolyn Schnurer, both of whom used ethnic fabrics as their design inspiration. Alas, the original labels have been removed from this dress too.

This 1960's silk dress does have the label - its by Teal Traina. Don't you love the black and white Mod graphic print?

Using A Scarf Clip As Jewelry

Scarf Clips as Jewelry

Beautiful scarf clips can also be worn as jewelry, accessories to your hat, shoe accessories, belt accessories, USE YOUR IMAGINATION.

Using the scarf clip as a pin or brooch is easily accomplished with only a safety pin.
Place the safety pin on the inside of your upper garment. Pass the loop of your scarf
through the bar created by the safety pin. Close the scarf clip. (Recommended for a
solid face scarf pin.)

1. Add to a chain and use as a pendant.
2. Need dressy shoes? Add a pair of matching scarf pins to a plain pair of shoes.
3. Clip onto belt and wear in front or on side.
4. Clip onto a hat.
5. Add a scarf to a hat and secure with a scarf clip.
6. Add ribbon and tie around wrist.

The Elusive "Special Size" In Vintage

I've recently aquired two collections primarily made up of harder to find sizes in the vintage realm....one a gorgeous array of plus size pieces ranging from the 20s to early 50s and the other a chic career wardrobe in petite sizes boasting such designers are Liz Claiborne and Anne Klein's work from the 60s.

I'll be working on adding a page for each size range to showcase these new pieces and pulling in any older ones that fall in the same category. Until then the pieces are house on the pages related to the decade they fall under. Some highlights!

Some of the plus sizes....

Beaded 40s cocktail dress in an XL size....

30s deco floral print rayon with painted buttons and bakelite sash clasp....

Seed packet print 40s rayon in XL size....

20s silk dress in XL size with lily of the valley print....

And in the petite range (some pieces not added to the site yet but coming shortly!)...

Early Anne Klein "Junior Sophisticates" dress in an XS size with embroidered bib detail....

Doris Dodson 40s dress with print of women's profiles and gardenias....

Early Liz Cliaborne for Youth Guild 2 piece knit 70s set.....

Check back for more!

Great Vintage Day Dresses at Dandelion Vintage

One of my favorite things about Summer is that I get to wear my pretty Day Dresses. In the Winter, I'm usually in sweaters and jeans, too cold for stockings and dresses. Plus I usually only wear black stockings, and they just aren't suited for lightweight Summer dresses. So as soon as the weather starts to break, I pull out my dresses and try to decide which to wear first.
The 5 dresses above are ones that I'll be wearing this Summer (no, sorry, they are not for sale. Mine!) The second dress above is a Swirl (jealous?) I love a fabulous Swirl! A Swirl is a perfect Summer dress - cool cotton, comfortable, with an adjustable tie waist. The navy print dress is Lee Wently for Wentworth.

Now, the dresses below are for sale at my website http://www.dandelionvintage.com/
And I have some very cute Day dresses to fit every style and budget -

Check out my Day Dresses on the following links -
* I have a few 1940s Dresses
* Many 1950-60s Day Dresses
* Some XL Size Dresses
* And Day Dresses from the late 1960s thru 1970s

I admit it, I'm a swim suit addict.

And when I found this 1949 Fashion Layout on the history of "The Bathing Suit" I thought it was the neatest thing since sliced bread. There are 8 pages (15 counting front and back) of historical swin suits and modern re-enactments of swim and bathing scenes, along with color layouts of many stars and starlettes of the summer of 1949. Including Marilyn Monroe. It a fun look at Mid Century fashion and how far fashion had come in less than 50 years. Compare to today's suits and you might be surprised.

Click on the record player to hear my fav 60's swim wear song.

You can find this layout and several others similar to it at www.cemetarian.com

How To Frame A Scarf Or Use As A Backdrop

To show off a special scarf or just to have a unique backdrop, simply place a scarf in a picture frame and hang it!

Look for A frame with glass and a mat.
Place the scarf over the print so that now the scarf is your framed "print", and you'll have it protected under glass.

You can paint the frame, and paint the mat, any color you want.

How to costume a period show without using real vintage.

Some years ago I took on the task of creating vintage costumes for a "cast of thousands" with a budget of $350. Even though I had real vintage pieces in my personal collection and the theatre had some actual vintage pieces, there was no way authentic pieces could withstand the rigor and flurry that goes on backstage, never mind what strenuous action may be required onstage.

My adventure to find over 500 individual costume pieces that could go through the quick changes and shameless neglect of actors took me far afield. There wasn't a thrift store within 200 miles that I didn't explore. As I examined books and photos of vintage/antique clothing, I learned how to take a basic modern garment and by "cutting and pasting" from one garment to another, I could achieve the "look" of vintage without paying very much for each piece. From shoes to hats to skirts to pants, the 500 pieces came together within 6 weeks and almost exactly in budget. A lace collar from an 80's modern dress went on a black blouse with full sleeves from the 80's. Small men's trousers were cut off and became knickers for pre-teen boys. A woman's wide brim summer straw hat was spray painted black and heavily trimmed with bits and pieces from other modern clothing.

It was one of the most enjoyable challenges I ever had as a professional costumer. Sometimes it isn't what you spend, but what you create for a pittance that makes showtime "vintage" so much fun. Of course, in real life, real vintage is so theatrical!

Free "Mini Stores" at Mainstreet Vintage Online Mall

There are a number of online "malls" that have sprung up in the last few years each with varying degrees of success.
Some of them work very well, have good search engines, lots of traffic and are easy to use for the vintage clothing seller.
Some not so much.
Luckily when I decided to leave eBay behind almost 3 years ago I took a chance with a new venture called MainStreet Mall.
So far it has been a very good fit for me and my inventory.

Yesterday one of the owners announced a new way to sell on Mainstreet Vintage....free "mini" stores.

The MSMO site owners are pleased to announce the launch of FREE "mini-stores" on the Main Street Vintage (MSV) vintage clothing and accessories mall. The mini-stores are similar in features and function to regular stores on the site but are completely free for as long as the seller wishes to keep them. There is no monthly rental (our only regular fee) and no listing fees or final sales commissions. The only limitation is that only 10 simultaneous listings are supported.

If you've been thinking of trying the site this is a great way to get involved. If you only have a few things to list this may be all you ever need. You can upgrade your account to a paid store with unlimited listings at any time.

Here is a link to Mainstreet Vintage.

Where have all the aprons gone?

For hundreds of years, homemakers have used aprons to keep their clothing clean and carry items when doing chores such as gathering eggs or for collecting kindling wood.

In the 1940s and 1950s the apron took on a new roll as that of a stereotype for the "perfect mother" or grandmother who always wore an apron. Prior to that aprons were more of a functional piece of a woman's wardrobe, meant to keep your dress clean in a time when people did not have the size wardrobes we sport now. As time went on aprons became more fashionable and used as accessories as evidenced by "cocktail aprons" which were worn when entertaining at home. It kept your dressier dress clean but at the same time helped you maintain that image of the stylish homemaker who knew how to throw a great party and still look wonderful doing it.

Homemakers were not the only ones that used aprons. School teachers, children, shop-keepers, and secretaries wore different styles of aprons over their clothing every day. In the 1920's and '30's aprons followed the silhouette of the dress - long, with no waist line. By the 1940's, aprons gained a cinched waistline, and were often gaily trimmed with rick-rack, buttons, and pockets of contrasting color. Many aprons were made from feed cloth. Feed cloth was a heavier fabric and was used as a sack to put seed or four in that farmers used. There was no wasting back then.

The 1950's brought out the half-aprons of highly starched cotton and sheer fabric trimmed with lace for special occasions. Also two-piece aprons and short smocks of bright cotton prints for every day use were popular. At one point, Aprons were a serious fashion element, not just a way to keep the dress underneath clean.

So today for your viewing pleasure we have these aprons available at Born Too Late Vintage. Whether you're looking to make a fashion statement or just enjoy some baking or cooking while keeping that great vintage dress underneath clean we have what you're looking for.

Damn Good Vintage

Hand Carved Vintage Bracelet from a very interesting place

This bracelet is from a load of clothing and jewelry that came out of a South Philadelphia home. My Mom actually claimed this as hers, and it's been squirreled away for about 10 years. Don't ask - it won't be for sale, my Mom likes it too much to sell it. Somewhere there are earrings that go with it too.

I'll admit that I don't know much about vintage jewelry. I usually only handle average pieces. I believe that this piece is ivory, maybe bone. It's a stretch bracelet with carved figures of a polar bear, whale, seal, walrus, and a Fox or wolf. I'm guessing it from the 1940s.
It is signed 'Raleigh Ozenna Little Diomede'
Check out the info on Little Diomede - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Diomede
http://www.pbs.org/harriman/current/profiles/diomede.html
- It's this tiny Alaskan island with a population of less than 200. Little Diomede Island is US territory and Big Diomede Island is Russian. Families living on the opposite island weren't allowed to visit each other during the cold war. There is only one small town on Little Diomede and since the island has a high flat top and very steep sides, the town is built down near the coast of the island.
The only access to the island is by sea or helicopter. Sounds like they didn't have electricity until the 1970s. There is no sewerage and their running water is very limited. The Eskimos made a living by hunting and carving ivory and then selling or trading the skins and carvings in Nome.

So not only is it a really cool looking piece, it has a very interesting background.

How To Make A Quick Beach Bag Out Of A Scarf!

So Easy!

Material Needed:

1 Large Square Scarf!

1. Lie the scarf on the floor and put what you want to carry inside.
2. Take 2 diagonal corners into the middle and tie together.
3. Take the other 2 corners and tie at their very ends to give a long strap for carrying.

That's It!

Make some history with a vintage swim suit

I love the styles of yesteryear's bathing suits. I recall with great memories a bathing suit my Mom gave to me that had been hers. It was a corset style suit with a little bit of skirt over the built in panties and made my tiny waist look even smaller and my small bustline look a bit larger. I wore that suit in the hot Phoenix sun for two summers until it fell apart. Had I known then what I know today I'd still have that suit in my collection and I would have worn something more practical for every day. Ah the mistakes of youth.

Bathing suits have been around since the Greeks. Actually the bikini is very similar to early Greek bathing suits. How we got from those minimalist suits from Ancient Greece to the cover it all up wool suits of the 1890s I'll never know.

As time passed, suits got a bit briefer like in the 1920s and 1930s. The bathing suits were a bit briefer for men than woman (surprise surprise) such as the ones seen here which are available from
Born Too Late Vintage on Ruby Lane:

Vintage 1930s Welgrume Duckies Swim Trunks W30 H32

Vintage 1930s Wool Worsted Wool Mans Full Bathing Suit Swim Suit Chest 36 W36 H36

Once the 1940s hit swimsuits really started to cling to womens curves such as those in the pictures of Betty Grable in her pin-up bathing suit or Esther Williams in her swimming movies all dolled up and looking great.

Bathings suits give a woman or for that matter a man a way to show what they're made of. Suits of the 1940s and 1950s had modesty panels across the hip area in lots of women's swimsuits.
Two piece suits were available and of course American Sportswear designer, Claire McCardell, designed some spectacular swimwear.

Vintage 60s Red, White & Blue Modest Bathing Suit Swim Suit B34 W32 H38 B cup Size 14T

Sale Vintage 1960s Roxanne Spider Mum Bathing Suit Swim Suit D cup B38 W32 H36

However, none were near as brief as the bikinis of the late 1960s to the present. And of course there was the famous monokini designed by Rudi Gernreich in 1964 that let almost all of it hang out. Bathing suits after the 1960s still included the ever popular tank suit for those serious swimmers and for those more interested in being seen or tanning, all types of bikinis such as string bikinis, etc. were available as well.

Now that I'm the parent of two young girls bathing suit decisions are looming ahead for this summer. At this point, however, my girls are young enough that they're not very interested in letting as much show as possible but that day will come soon enough. For now, my husband and I have another summer to be able to dodge that bullet!

It's Betsey...on etsy !

I love the whimsy...I love the fun....really!
and Betsey Johnson has been delivering it since the 60s man...

a bit of bio....
Now firmly part of what was considered the “Youth Quake,” Betsey soon found herself in the unforgettable 1960’s Warhol scene. Edie Sedgwick was her house model, while the Velvet Underground’s John Cale took to wearing her designs both on-stage and off. In 1969, Betsey began her foray into retail by opening a new boutique called Betsey Bunki Nini. Directly following the opening store Betsey was offered a job from Alvin Duskin in San Francisco and thus began living a bi-coastal life for the remaining years of the 60’s.

Along with the new decade came new career opportunities for Betsey and in the early 1970’s, she came into creative control of the label Alley Cat, a label which set the trends for the 70’s rock n’ roll clothing, with bohemian and ethnic styles. In 1972, along with Halston, Betsey won the coveted Coty Award becoming the youngest designer to ever receive the honor.
so I'm so happy to list this amazingly fun top..on etsy..so Betsey...
