Swap Til You Drop

From the Warrington Post UK -

Swap 'til you drop!
3:07pm Tuesday 31st March 2009

By Nicola Davies

A VINTAGE clothing afficionado has come up with a new-fashioned way for women to buy clothes and accessories during the credit crunch.

Katie Wilson, aged 37, from Farnworth Village held her first ‘Drop and Swap’ event at the Spread Eagle pub in Lymm on Wednesday where women were invited to come along with up to 10 items of clothing or accessories in good condition to swap for the same number they had brought.

Katie said: “We got some really great feedback from the night and it went down very well.

“This is the perfect time for ‘Drop and Swaps’ as many of us are a little short of pennies but we have items in our wardrobe that could be appreciated by someone else – it’s a fun evening out for only a few pounds and you get to go home with new clothes.”

The left-overs from the night were donated to St Rocco’s Hospice.

Katie added: “I was introduced to the concept of vintage clothing at an extremely early age and was often taken to jumble sales, charity shops and car boot sales.

“In the 80’s it wasn’t so trendy to be seen in a charity shop box rummaging around for a bargain, however things have changed and people are far more aware of the amazing vintage outfits available at an extremely low cost.”

Katie is also looking into expanding the venture to include ‘Drop and Swap’ toy events and is setting up a website to advertise forthcoming events.

The next clothing ‘Drop and Swap’ will take place at the Spread Eagle on April 22 from 7pm. Entrance costs £5.

The 2 Basic Shapes For Scarves

Scarves Come In Two Basic Shapes

Squares:
Medium to large squares are the most versatile size and are ideal for coats.
These provide more of a warmth than oblong scarves.
They are also best used as a suit or blouse filler.
When folded they can take on an oblong shape.
Small square scarves are great accent pieces.

Small Square Scarves measure less than 24 inches
Medium 24 to 27 inches
Large 30 inches or more

Oblong:
Usually considered an accent item. With the exception of wool scarves. Wool scarves are used for warmth.
Oblong Scarves measure approximately 11 X 54 inches
The size and proportion of oblong scarves vary.

Confessions of a Mad Idol Addict

If someone would have told me 5 or 6 years ago that I would become an avid viewer of the show or that I had the show programmed to record when I am not home, I would have probably laughed. Back then I thought the show was strictly for the younger crowd. 8 seasons later I can barely wait to see what new songs will be performed. This season I dared to pick my top Idols from the beginning, so far they are still there and going strong.

Last week as a double treat Idol showcased the sounds of Motown a few of the contestants wore vintage style, I say vintage style because unless I see the item or confirmation that they were indeed vintage I cannot say for sure but was that a shark skin suit worn by Adam Lambert?

I was VERY impressed with the singing as well, Adam is showing more maturity as the show progresses, he is one of my top faves.

Another stunner and talented performer is Lil Rounds, she wore an Ombre fringed dress, also loved the 60s hairstyle.

What do you think Monokini means?

It's amazing how a word means one thing to one generation and is bastardized in the next. Last night our 11-year-old daughter told my husband and I that she saw a cool monokini on the Walmart website.

Talk about overreacting and freaking out. Both DH and I were adamant about DD not even thinking about wearing a monokini. Shades of Rudy Gernreich's original monokini filled our thoughts (yes we are old as dirt!). We were both kids when the original monokini hit the runway.

The only problem is that DD's monokini is this:

Now granted we're still not letting our 11-year-old wear something like this, but there's a lot more covered in the Walmart version than good old Rudy's. After showing DD what the original monokini looked like she had a better feel for why DH and I both freaked out at what she said.

We all had a good laugh and it just goes to show that you need to make sure you're speaking the same language before going off the deep end. While DD won't be sporting the new version of the monokini, I'm sure we'll find something a bit more appropriate for our DD to wear to the pool this summer. Her Dad thinks something like this would be perfect:

I'm sure DD and I will find something in between that will make her happy and Dad as well.

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Designer Dresses

New this week at Couture Allure, we've added several designer dresses among others.

This 1960's mini dress is by Michael Mott for Paraphernalia. Paraphernalia was New York's answer to the London Mod boutique movement which opened in 1965. Betsey Johnson was the first in-house designer for Paraphernalia, and Michael Mott took over when she left to start her own business. Super rare, this dress is in blue velvet and is decorated with glass stones. It's no coincidence that Mott also designed jewelry, many times with large glass rhinestones.

This 1960's coat dress is a Givenchy Adaptation by Dan Millstein. The Dan Millstein company was one of the manufacturers that would send it's designers to Paris and pay a cover charge to attend the couture showings. They would then purchase several originals, bring them back to the US, and copy them with the designer’s approval.

This late 1960's skirt and vest set is by highly sought-after designer Mr. Dino. Mr. Dino is known for Pucci style prints. This set is made of cotton velveteen and does have the Mr. Dino signature in the print.

This elegant 1950's black silk full skirted dress is by another sought-after designer, Ben Reig. It has a distinctive neckline treatment with a floating band that ties in a bow.

Just in time for Viva Las Vegas, this 1950's Hawaiian made sarong dress comes with a matching stole. In nearly mint condition, I don't think it was ever worn!

Finally, one of my favorite dresses without a label this week is this 1960's cocktail dress. Take a look at those black satin roses at the hem!

1960's
The Beehive

The beehive was no ordinary doo it was a way of life, and it demanded complete and utter commitment.

The foundation of every beehive was, of course, the backcombing. The simplest way to do it was the lift sections of the crown, brush them quite smooth, and start brushing back down the hair shafts, at the back of the tress. You left that bit standing up like a rooster's comb, and went onto the next section until the crown of your head was covered in backcombed tufts standing to attention.

Now you took the brush and smoothed the top hair back over the backcombing. It created a balloon on the top of your head.

You had to take care because it was a tricky operation and the whole thing could end up looking more birds nest than bee hive.

It was best done with the palms of the hands – if you brushed the beehive into place you risked flattening the hair and loosening the backcombing. So you smoothed the hair back carefully with the palms of your hands and gathered the loose ends into a neat chignon or roll, held in place with bobby pins. . Hair spray was the real secret for a firm beehive with the right cotton candy finish. Ozone layer, what's that? Give me another can of hairspray, this thing isn't properly set yet.

You slept in your beehive, wrapping a silk scarf around it to protect it, and tried to keep it going as long as you could.

The Beehive was a way of life.

Capri ! it's an island...it's your pants!

If you land at the Naples airport, you can get to the isle of Capri.......the fabled tiny island off the coast of Italy, situated westerly from just about where a buckle would be on the boot of Italy. The deliciously beautiful Grotta Azzurra...the Blue Grotto mesmerizes with the unreal beauty of light upon water. Capri's natural charms have inspired much wonderous art and useful things including fashions that have been created to celebrate the bright and cheery colors of the island's features, and to relive and inspire the feelings of comfort, beauty and fun!

Emilio Pucci has said he was inspired to create his iconic designs and the mind-blowing colors because of the beauty of Capri. We can forgive him then, perhaps, for being so Italian that he was a fan of Mussolini! Pucci was from a rich Italian family, an athlete, and also a fine skier with Olympian talent. On that strength he won a scholarship to Portland's Reed College where he designed his first small collection ....the college's ski team uniforms in the mid-30s.

Pucci set up his first haute couture house at the jet set resort of Canzone del Mare on the Isle of Capri after WWII. His skiwear was discovered by a Harper's Bazaar editor, and Mr. Marcus of Nieman Marcus encouraged him to design other garments, and Pucci responded with the early designs in the stunning color combos we swoon over.

The isle of Capri figures prominently in another design we are are so familiar with......the capri pants....those cute little 50s calf length pants that have resurged back into the fashion world. German designer, Sonja de Lennart, produced a collection just after WWII calling it the Capri Collection because of her family's love of the island.

Full skirts with wide belts were one of the first of Sonja's designs that became popular. But it was her 1948 design, the tight Capri pants, such a change from the Katherine Hepburn-style wide slacks, that took the world by storm. Designer Edith Head dressed Audrey Hepburn in capri pants, the skirt, the high-necked blouse and the wide belt....all designs by de Lennart, worn in Roman Holiday. Givenchy, a year later, dressed Audrey in de Lennart's capris in Sabrina.

From high fashion to everyday wear, movie stars and housewives, even the iconic Beatnik look of black turtleneck, capri pants, wide belt and flat shoes, can thank Sonja de Lennart.

I have these right now on etsy....in the shorter length we called knee-knockers...

fyi... a little list of Pants lengths.....all fabulous!

Bermuda shorts, and clam diggers or walking shorts, are from thigh length to just below the knee, while traditional capri pants are generally calf to ankle length and are form-fitting, perhaps with a small v at the hem. Pants that are cropped and wide are called capri's, flood pants, or pedal pushers. And then of course, there are Man-pris!!

Childhood Dreams and Adult Realities!

Two things have happened in the past couple of weeks to bring nostalgia bubbling forth. The first was a phone call from a dear cousin who I hear from seldom. I must admit that I don't call her either. But..........be that as it may..............we have reconnected and chat some on Facebook these days and I'm getting to know her children and grandchildren a bit through the photos and quick comments made.

As was usually the case she is "On my Back" in this picture taken in 1958.

The other thing that happened, is an Estate Sale Find of a large lot of Braniff Dinner Service and this absolutely fabulous Tote Bag. In doing a bit of research on the bag (I already was familiar with the dinner service, since I flew Brannif quite a bit way back when).........I discovered this wonderful and colorful site hosted by an ex Braniff Flight Attendent Mod Colors.

Click on photo to go to auction

Now, you ask, what do the two have in common?

Simple. When we were the age of the photo above, we talked for hours and had major dreams of becoming the most glamourous girls on earth and being Stewardesses. We had the plans. Finish High School, get a job, get an apartment and live together and travel all over the world...........Sigh!

But that didn't happen. Apparently our dreams were a bit advanced, since we both married before we graduated from High School and the Flying the Friendly Skies became a very vague and distant memory. As a matter of fact I didn't even remember it until I was researching this bag.

Ironically, if we had succeeded with our dream we might well have been wearing those Pucci outfits. The Flying colors started in 1965 and we both graduated from High School in 1966..........so the timing was perfect, but fate had other plans for us.

I'm not tragically sad about the change in dreams, but it's fun to live vicariously through the websites of others who traveled a different path.

Look East, it's Hammer Time!

Since one could easily call this the most heavily revival filled decade to date, it's rather intriguing that the early 80's Japanese infused work of avant-garde pioneers like YOHJI YAMAMOTO, Rei Kawakubo of COMME DES GARCONS, KANSAI YAMAMOTO and ISSEY MIYAKE are finally getting some due attention in the mainstream.
From Japan they optimistically brought an arty, intellectual and quite challenging aesthetic to the world of fashion like never seen before, a reaction to the ultra-femme norms of society and a pre-curser to the maximalist glamor of the Reagen era. Together they introduced the concepts of anti-fashion through austere deconstruction, materials were often draped around the body and featured frayed, unfinished edges along with holes and a general asymmetrical shape. And to us, most importantly, everything was black, something many ran away from at one time.
And with dropped crotch pants, deconstruction, and asymmetry seeming to feel like a runway norm these days, we wanted to take a moment and highlight some of our own finds inspired by this groundbreaking era in fashion. Take these fantastic early 80's YOHJI YAMAMOTO fluid black pants that have a dropped crotch and one leg that's more voluminous than the other, ultimately creating a soft, draped, poetic imbalance. And from a man known for his own take on Eastern-influenced ease, GIORGIO ARMANI, come these early 90's black drop-crotch pants that have a pleated dhoti drawstring waist and contrasting velvet cuffs. Both of these pieces beautifully highlight the considerable contributions of the Japanese invasion of the early 80's while at the same time having a very contemporary sensibilty to them.

Going Green: Nature vs. Future

With the Green agenda finally hitting fashion over the past few season's, we can't think of a more humorously chic way to support the effort than with this sassy(we can use that word for once!) mid 90's irredescent green MOSCHINO Cheap & Chic skirt suit. It is composed of what looks to be like photo prints of the earth & moon, boasts chunky plastic bobble-like buttons complete with pictures of the moon in them and it's jacket is paneled with contrasting stripes of text spelling out "Nature" on the front & "Future" on the back. It also has that era's fabulous cut with it's fitted, short jacket and sexy abbreviated skirt. Even almost 15 years later, it still makes quite a strong statement about the current friction between modernity & the mess it can make vs. nature. Talk about making a delightful in-your-face social remark!

The FASH-A-MATIC Suit Jacket!

Don't you just love that name? Fash-A-Matic.

The visual that inspires for me is little glass doors with clothes behind each one & you put your money in & remove the garment like an Automat Cafeteria for fashion.

Here is the cutest little vintage late 50s lightweight spring jacket with all of the original tags & the Fash-A-Matic label on the left sleeve.

From the big hang tag: Fash-A-Matic THE AUTOMATIC WASH & DRY SUIT.

It's made of Rayon & Dacron with a crisp finish in a tiny houndstooth weave.
Alas, the skirt is missing, sure wish I could go to that fashion automat & pluck one from behind a little glass door...

Available at The Spectrum but the auction ends in a matter of minutes so please check our other listings, we have some wonderful NOS & NWT vintage clothing on eBay & at Etsy.

I sold this gown a while back and the buyer sent me these pictures. Andy is the photographer. He sent me this info: "Molloy Silk Gown you sold me back in 2006? I've just realized that I never got back to you with any pictures of it. Here's a couple from last year, suitably sepia'd. They were taken at an Edwardian country house owned by the UK National Trust, which they let for holidays. We thought it made an appropriate backdrop."

    Hi Vintage Bulletin posters,
The other day I sent out an email to all registered posters. I'm posting that email here, in case you didn't receive it.

I like to keep at least a week's worth of recent posts on the first page, which can be 20 or more posts sometimes. Since so many posts show on the front page, we need to keep the page loading time in mind. Big images with big files sizes slow down the page, especially when there are several posts with slow loading images. If people reading the blog have to wait for slow images to load - they won't wait - they'll back right out and maybe not come back to the blog. We need to have the blog moving fast to encourage people to stay and read.

    So please remember -
You can post up to 6 photos. You can make collages with multiple items in each photo, but please only 6 total photos/collages.
Please keep the images of single items around 350 pixels wide and collages under 650 wide. Please keep file sizes around 75K or less.
PhotoScape is a great free photo editor that can help you change the actually image size and most importantly the file size for quick loading.
The best thing to do is to upload your images to blogger. In the editor, just click on the little photo image next to spellcheck to upload your images. That way, the photos are automatically resized, they will be stored in your post forever, and they won't take up space in your own photo storage.

Also new rule - No more Slideshows. I'm sorry to do that, but alot of the feedback that I've been receiving is that the slideshows slow down or jam up the board, especially when there are several from different posters on the board at once.

From now on, any posts with big photos will be removed until the photos are edited to the acceptable size. I'm sorry to have rules, I know rules suck. But I have to keep it fair for all posters and keep the blog readable and inviting to our readers.

    Thank you, Carol

New at Couture Allure - Vintage Evening Gowns and Suits

New this week at Couture Allure Vintage Fashion - we added several evening gowns from the 40's and 60's, as well as a few suits and dresses.

A dramatic red rose garden fashions a gorgeous evening gown from the early 1960's. Who doesn't need a touch of summer right now?

One of my favorite pieces ever. This exceptional late 1960's evening gown with its asymmetric one-shoulder and sleeve design will certainly set you apart from the crowd!

From the 1940's, this beaded evening gown has a touch of Egyptian flair, don't you think?

Ice blue silk shantung fashions a 1960's dress with matching beaded jacket.

And this 3-piece 1960's suit was styled after one that Jackie Kennedy wore on her trip to Mexico in 1962.
Finally, this sweet 1950's Kay Windsor gingham dress is perfect to wear for your next picnic or daytime stroll through the farmer's market.

    Vogue - March 1st 1955

I don't look at modern Vogue magazines, but I love looking through vintage ones. Although 1930-40s fashions are my favorites, I think that I enjoy looking at 1950s Vogue more, because you see so many designer and company names that you recognize. Plus during WWII, there was no fashion coming out of Paris, so the clothing in 40s Vogues doesn't have any big names, and styles were more subdued.

Let's drop some well known names from these scans taken from the March 1st 1955 issue of Vogue.

The 2nd or 3rd page of most 1950s Vogues usually feature an ad from Lilli Ann (I wonder how much that cost them?) The ad says - 'Lilli Ann Designs for young and exciting women of all ages. This divine Bride's costume, cap sleeves sheath in empire silhouette, slim waist, flaired peplum jacket. Fabric is silk and worsted Bamboo woven in France for Liili Ann' Cost was $100.00'

Right - Long jacketed dress and hat set by Valentina

Designers also did ads for different types of fabrics too.
Left below is Emma Domb for cotton. 'The message in this bottle is clear to see: well-dressed girls are always found in cotton!' Emma Domb floral dress in cotton fabric from Fluegelman, $35.00

Right is Givenchy for Orlon fabric. Yeah orlon. 'Givenchy chooses Orlon acrylic fiber for his lean-torso sweater $20.00' - skirt also by Givenchy in orlon fiber.

Left is Ceil Chapman for Julius Garfinckel stores. It is 'A bouffant butterfly with a tautly wrapped chrysalis of moss-rose printed peau de soie $125.00'

Right is for you Alex Colman fans - 'Love that Alex Colman look' Tyrolean cotton print halter with tiered skirt - $35.00. The Alex Colman ads could usually be found near the back of Vogue.

    Sale At Both My Sites!

    Hi, everybody -

I'm putting a lot of inventory on sale, particularly on my Ebay site, because my husband has ordered me to get rid of 2/3 of it or else. (This is the big drawback to working from your apartment--especially when you share it with someone else who is not a vintage clothing fan!)

For instance, here are a few of the blouses in a plus-size evening blouse lot in my store. The one on the far left has the very on-trend larged pleated collar and neck-tie, and it is in cream with tan polka dots.

    Bloomers! They're so Spring...

Or, How to research a weird vintage garment.

So, a few months ago I found these:

All I could think of to call it was....gym clothes...bloomers...
I've lately been on a bloomers kick because this find started it last December when I was in the midst of whine-fest about how much I hate Winter (because I do)...

these are in my etsy shop, but I might reclaim them since they are So Cute!

So, I asked for help on the ebay Vintage Clothing board, and got tons of help, and the Thought of Gym Suit....stirred up a lot of painful, agonizing memories of Gym Class, and the Awful Gymsuit we were forced to wear in junior and high school. I suspect, that just at the moment when we are facing the horrifying changes our bodies go through in that time of our young lives, we are forced to wear the most universally unflattering garment ever devised.....save for tampons (not really a garment) or The Burka...maybe wood clogs are worse....
    Let me introduce Amelia Bloomer....

    this pic is from virgina.edu

Research revealed that the spunky Amelia Bloomer encouraged the wearing of long baggy pants with ankle cuffs that were just dandy for enraging the menfolk and the uptight women who aligned with them, and for actually Enjoying Life unrestricted by 42 petticoats and 4 layers of wool skirts...and that's just from the waist down...horrors on the rib cage squashing corsets...(another post just for that!)

Though the puffy pants and shorts are now known as Bloomers, Mrs. Bloomer was influenced by 1850's era Women's Libber....Libby Miller and her cousin Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Exercise and sports were becoming quite popular about this time with the invention of the bicycle and baseball towards the end of the 19th century, and new clothing styles were invented, since catching ones petticoat in the spokes could lead to catastrophe.(google Isadora Duncan for a sickening lesson on Fashion as Unintentional Suicide)

Middies , Middy shirts and Bloomers
took over casual wear like wildfire because of comfort and cuteness. These 2 piece outfits for sports evolved to one piece for gymnasium wear and exercise. As things do, the middy lost its collar, tie and sleeves by the 30s, but kept the elastic bloomer leg. Buttons on the shoulder were the way in and out.
In the book linked above, School Sewing Based On Home Problems, published in 1916, we see a Middy gym suit, and a swimsuit with buttoned shoulders similar to mine.

By the 40s, shirt styles with front buttons and collars with short sleeves were back in style.
These were paired with shorts, mostly without bloomers, but the bloomers were under the skirts or under the shorts.
A wonderful trip thru gymsuit land is here at Taffy's....

Take a look here at the Levittown High School reunion page for some gym suits, and lots of other fun 60s photos.

Based on the label, the styling and the color, the history of bloomers and middies and the history of exercise and women's lib, I feel confident these are late 20s thru the 30s. This post is an abbreviated version that's on my own blog, funkoma vintage.

    Green! Buy Some. Wear Some.

What I wore March 16, 2009. It's easy for me to dress in green.

Here's how I put modern and vintage together....60s cardigan, 70s hat, 70s slacks (boys, no less) and a modern designer.

It's a favorite color, and I have a green everything to wear if I choose. So...I wore my green and caramel striped Dries Van Noten wool sweater.......god I love this thing!!
Chartreuse, olive, caramel, chocolate......favorite colors and favorite foods!
Under that I wore a 60s vintage black cashmere cardigan and way underneath was a black tank top. I wore a pair of pale caramel boys slacks. Yes.
My boots were my trusty black and purple lace up cowgirls from the 80s.

But the best chunk is my hat .......not only is it Green. Velvet. 70s floppy hat. It's Norma Kamali! I am not a label whore tho I just dropped the names of 2 biggies. But like I always say......buy Quality. Buy what you like. I spotted the sweater and had it in my hands only because of the colors...and later I found the Van Noten label. Bonus!
The Kamali hat...I've been looking for an authentic 70s floppy for about 2 years. So again, Bonus! 2 of my favorite designers....because they have a sense of authenticity and are true artists that became fashion designers.....

The Kamali hat came from etsy seller.......JPsuniqueboutique

figure8studio debuts at The Vintage Bulletin!

Hey now! It is wonderful to take part of this great community of vintage lovers, one I have been a lurker and shopper for some time. We are coming to you from the beautiful and vvvery cccold Nnnorth West.

Im a winter lover, never thought I would be writing this as my toasty fireplace rages, but I think Im ready for spring. I wont be writing that when the dog days of summer roll in but I digress.

In fashion news, did I read correctly folks are calling a Maxi a Town Gown these days? I wonder where that originated.
When I first heard that term, Athens Georgia, a beautiful little college town in the South East came to mind. Every year the graduates fill the tiny city's shops in search of the perfect prom dress therefor Town Gown.

As far as prom dresses, we have a few. This mermaid shimmery emerald green strapless dress:

    if you are edgy, different

if your heart desires a Maxi or Town Gown :)

We have quite a few in our arsenal, for every season and every occasion.

Where Style + Street Meet: Haight Street

    Beth Hughes, Chronicle Staff Writer
    Sunday, March 15, 2009

On upper Haight Street, head shops edge up against punk emporiums and hipster stores. Added to the mix are the vintage fashion shops clustered between Ashbury and Shrader streets, a concentration that draws tourists, style-savvy yet frugal fashionistas, stylists, textile collectors, fashion-industry pickers seeking inspiration for designers, and the occasional celebrity.

"I go every couple of weeks," says Manifa Minas, 26, who works at the Postal Chase on Cole Street. "You can find unique pieces there that you can put together with what you have to make something even more unique."

That's the appeal of vintage fashion, creating a highly individual style. "Regular clothes are boring. Either everyone has them or they don't fit," says Althea James, 15, an Urban School student who frequents the vintage shops alone and with friends. Last year, she budgeted $50 for a prom dress, and bought two possibilities, $10 and $20. She wore the more expensive dress, a froth of tiny pink pleats.

Phoebe Hasley, the assistant manager at La Rosa, recalls a short, slim tourist visiting San Francisco for a week with his girlfriend. For fun, he tried on some '50s menswear. " 'I'm a '50s shape,' he said as he came out of the dressing room," she says. "He saw the light. He was thrilled." He came back several times and overhauled his wardrobe.

We've asked the owners and managers for their takes on their stores, and picks for this transitional season, as well as the best way to buy vintage clothes. The consensus: Shop during the week, early in the day, focus on fit rather than labeled size, be adventurous and don't give up. It's hit or miss, but you'll find something.

Vintage Dresses - New This Week at Couture Allure

Newly listed at Couture Allure Vintage Fashion - some great cocktail dresses, a 1950's Emma Domb, and some pops of color for summer.

A 1950s floral satin cocktail dress is jazzed up with a bright red sash.

This early 1960s cocktail dress is given a dash of sass with the swirling ruffles at the left side and all around the hem.

Citrus color stripes are punched up with a bright pink velvet ribbon that is woven in and out of the full skirt of this 1950s cotton dress.

I had to show you the back of this 1950s tiered silk organza cocktail dress. A free floating drape is attached at the back waist and adds drama when you walk away.

Here's that 1950s Emma Domb dress I mentioned. Black taffeta, super full skirt, sweetheart neckline. What else do you need in a vintage party dress?

A 1960s cotton shift dress with loops at the hem. We love the look of this dress when brought up to date with a modern wide belt.

Who doesn't need a classic black evening gown in their closet? You'll find yourself reaching for this early 1960s evening gown over and over for years to come. So very Audrey!

    Market Publique is NOW OPEN

Market Publique, the new online marketplace for vintage fashion, launched this Sunday. It's been 3 days and there's already tons of great items up for sale!

Market Publique started when the three founders realized there was a lack of options and communities for vintage lovers on the Internet. A place that was fair, easy-to-use, and completely devoted to vintage.

We are committed to bringing the community together so we can all have a place to buy, sell and discuss vintage in a positive and focused environment, and inspire style.

If you're a buyer, come browse the site many items already up for sale. Some of my favorites:

80s Open Back Mini Dress with Bow Detail, Chitown Vintage on Market Publique.

Mod Blue and Red Coat AND Matching Red Dress, Violetville Vintage on Market Publique.

Abstract Floral Knit Missoni Maxi Cardigan, Amarcord Vintage Fashion on Market Publique

If you're a seller, come try the site out! Here's more information about selling on Market Publique.

    Kids do the Dandiest Things!

We couldn't help but feel but feel a little more than envious looking at how intuitively stylish eight-year old Arlo Weiner(son of  Mad Men producer Matt Weiner, today's most stylish show) is while describing his own personal Frank Sinatra inspired, angelically dandy looks on MensStyle.com. If this is this what growing up in a decade of edited revivals and globalism can look like, maybe some things in the world aren't going so bad after all!

Barbie Turns 50 and it's Time to Find her a New Home

I was too old for Barbie. By 1960, I was 12 years old and believe it, or not dating boys. Dolls were out of the question but.....I always secretly wanted her...or at least to live the life she seemed to be living. I married at 16 (1964) and thought I was living Barbie's life, but still had never held one in my hands. I saw the ads in magazines and saw the dolls in the stores.

That era (1960-Beatles) is my favorite era. Perhaps, because it helps me relive my innocence. my innocence. I divorced in 1971 and remarried in 1972 (to present Darlin' hubby) and we raised a son. No room for Barbie there...although I became extremely familiar with GI Joe and Star Wars.....it wasn't until June of 2002 when we stumbled on a lot of Barbie stuff that I got interested again....now got hooked.......but the early dolls and clothing is what I really loved.

...... I think because it reminded me of a time when everything was possible and elegant and just plain lovely, and we lived in a pre-Kennedy assassination era. Namely "Camelot". But as with all things the time has come to part with my collection. I find that maintenance and adding to the collection is too time consuming and not as much fun as it was in the beginning of my Barbie Days (at the ripe old age of 54). So I'm offering my collection as a lot this week. And you just have to see it to believe it. This great lot of 43 Dolls and more than 400 pieces of clothing and accessories can be found at cemetarian on eBay.

Vintage Shirt Lot Auction Ending Soon On Ebay!

    Hi, everybody -

I have an auction up for a lot of eight tops and tunics, mostly evening wear, from one estate. The original owner was six feet tall and very buxom, and boy, did she love turtlenecks and mocknecks! All the tops range from L-XL, Bust 42-46. The auction ends in two days, so I thought it would share it with you all, since it has the ridiculously low starting price of $9.99. (I hope the manni having no arms doesn't freak anybody out.)

Here are some of the tops. First, an ultra-60s Pucci-esque silky top from Lord & Taylor:

Next, a mint green sleeveless sweater, covered with sequins:

A red polka-dot mockneck made by Avant Garde New York:

And one of two identical shimmery shirts, one pink, one blue, made of some sort of glitter knit.

You can find this auction at:

I will be listing quite a few vintage blouses in weeks to come, so keep watching the stars! Or something.

Accessory of the week! 80's MAUD FRIZON Heels

If you could say anything about 80's era accessories being right for today, footwear especially, you could say they are highly unpredictable. And frankly that's not always such a good thing since shoes tend to look so dated shortly after they come into vogue. These 80's MAUD FRIZON heels happen to be a fantastic exception with their dainty banana heels, graphic cut-outs and pointed toes that possess that crucial slight bit of roundness. Cut-outs are an eternal plus in our book and they happen to lend a particular architectural quality to these sexy, timeless heels that gives them a sleek sophistication.

Born Too Late Vintage is staying open!

Well it's been a while since my last blog. I thought I had made the hard decision to close my vintage clothing business down, but wait! A cry went up from the next generation of Born Too Late Vintage owners. You see, I forgot about the fact that my daughters love vintage! They love the fabrics, the styles and the fact that they can mix and match vintage with their clothing from today. So I had to re-think closing up and decided to stay open. Like it or not, Born Too Late Vintage is part of my legacy to my daughters and so we must go on.

While I'm still selling the things I love the best (1960s and back), I'll be bringing you more of the 70s and 80s things that my girls love best. You might even see this model here, there and everywhere in my stores as well.

So make sure to check out what's new at Born Too Late Vintage because the next generation is taking control!

    $70 000 Suit

Yes, you read that right and the King of Morocco really wants one. A Vicuna suit that is.

Vicuna is the most expensive cloth in the world, and Scotland’s Holland & Sherry has woven the first 100% worsted Vicuna fabric. It's $4000 per yard and took them 5 years to gather the wool.

This cute Vicuna is only found in the highest part of the Andes Mountains and it's super fine wool can only be shorn every 3 years.

All wool is warm because of tiny scales that are on the hollow air-filled fibres that cause them to interlock and trap insulating air. Wool has the ability to absorb moisture to the extent of thirty percent of it’s weight without feeling damp. Vicuna wool is finer than any other wool. That means the wool is softer, lighter and warmer than any other wool on this earth. The fibers of vicuna wool are so sensitive to chemical treatment that the wool is normally used in it’s natural golden color.

Well good for you 'King what's yer name of Morocco'. I'll go make a cup of tea now and re-use the bag.

    Introducing.....SugarLids!

I'm not spread quiiiite thin enough with the shop, site, Momming and buying a house so I decided to start my own vintage upcycled/vintage inspired hat line....SugarLids! I have tons of vintage millinery supplies (feathers, bases, flowers, lots of netting) from collecting and selling vintage over the years, as well as loads of fabric, ribbons and the like. I've always been enamored by vintage hats (hence 4 pages of hats on the WEBSITE), and after handling them for years I felt fairly comfortable with understanding their construction. I'll be honing my sewing skills and creating a studio within my office once I get moved, but to kick it off I made my first hat today and listed it on etsy, accessible via the website SUGARLIDS.COM.

This first hat is constructed on a modern ring base with vintage ostrich plumes, vintage netting, vintage starched crinoline pieces and a vintage satin rosette. Tilt style inspired by 40s tilt & toy hats, it has an elastic decorative ribbon to go under the hair and hold in place while tilted forward or can be bobby pinned into hair. All hand sewn and designed by me! Watch for more to come!

    Yay hats!!

1960's Andrade tunic/micro mini dress. A sunshine-y, full lace piece straight from Hawaii.

1980's Alfred Angelo, flirtations. Fringe! Fringe! Fringe! + deco sequin detail. In a word...gorgeous!

Asymmetrical cape shoulder dress. This is one of our favorites this week. Super unique, avant garde style.

Silky RAYON Vintage 50s Hawaiian Sarong VLV Dress L W30

Silky RAYON Vintage 50s Hawaiian Sarong VLV Dress L W30 - offered by Posh Pig Vintage

    From the description -
Terrific vintage Hawaiian sarong-style sun dress from the 50s, made out of a slick and silky tropical bamboo and water print rayon in shades of blue/green, white and black. Fitted bodice is lined in soft white cotton and boned, gathered at the center front with ties, and has turn-down flaps at the top of the bust line. Skirt is sarong/wrap style and is not adjustable in how tight it wraps but is open under the wrapped material and therefore forgiving in fit. There is an attached sash you tie at the side and the bodice has a neck/halter strap you can pick the length of via different button holes (or tuck it in and go strapless). Side metal zipper with hook and eye at top. No tags or labels, but was a well-done, professionally made dress.

Excellent condition, fully wearable and presentable. There is just a very faint water/perspiration mark on the side of the bust flap, hard to see but could probably be spot treated if necessary.

38" bust laid flat (might fit a 40" bust if your cup size isn't that large), 30" waist, 44" hips with the skirt overlapping naturally, 9" underarm to waist, 34" waist to hem on the right side (slightly longer that side because of the sarong draping on the left).
