Three Huge Boxes...the Story Continues

Hi, everybody -

I wrote a few days ago about packing three huges boxes for a wholesale lot sale. And how they sat, prominently featured, in my front hall, until we had to move them into the living room/Ebay store because we hosted Thanksgiving. (We had a blast--I hadn't hosted for at least fifteen years!)

In a bit we are meeting with a friend who is also a professional organizer, and he suggested redoing the layout of the apartment in such a way so that all of the bookshelves would be in the living room, and all of the Ebay Store would be in the front hall in the corner. We call it the "Ebay store" even though I sell in multiple venues.

But my husband is so dazzled by the results of my cleanup it's going to be a hard sell. Here is the front hall, the morning after Thanksgiving:

I didn't think to take a picture of the holiday table when it was set, of course.

And here is my Ebay store in the home office:

And just for the heck of it, here is a picture of me right after I quit drinking nine years ago:

What can I say, I like to brag. Believe it or not, I got even FATTER after that pic was snapped!

I have a feeling there's going to be some big arguments today. The fact that I literally cannot get to anything doesn't seem to cut much mustard with the husband...maybe that's because I couldn't really get to anything before, either. All my closets are already full, too.

They really are BIG boxes.

Pray for me, guys, and have a great weekend!

Best,
Elisa

Three Huge Boxes...

I have too much inventory. WAY too much inventory.

So I thought of what might be an inventive way to get rid of some, in a super-sized lot of over 100 items. The idea of steaming and photographing, say, 50 slips made me want to go hide under the bed. But what about a mystery grab bag?

I had seen those auctions and they seemed like a fun, easy way to clear out a big load of clothing. Only I needed some big boxes. After spending over an hour trying to make a big box out of a box that a child's crib had come in (slashing myself with the box cutter in the process and trying not to bleed too badly on the shipping tape I was using to vainly hold the asymmetrical thing together), I gave up and went to the UPS Store, where I bought three 20 cubic foot boxes for a mere $30.00. Hey, this is New York.

They were really. Big. Boxes.

I started opening tubs and throwing open closets, folding and tossing clothes into the boxes as I went. Since the place as always was a hellacious mess, slipping and sliding on random empty shipping envelopes and papers and the occasional scarf was a definite hindrance to efficiency. Nevertheless, I had one box filled, and then another, and then...

Paralysis set in. I was surrounded by bins and closetsfuls of vintage clothing, lingerie, and accessories, but I could no longer choose what to put in the last box. How could I actually part with that indigo Miss Elaine jumpsuit, even if I still hadn't gotten around to listing it after three years?

(I am posing on a box because the jumpsuit was far too short in the torso for long-waisted me, and if I stood up straight, it would have cut me in half lengthwise.)

Or those cute Vanity Fair nylon pajamas? Or any of those adorable silk figural handkerchiefs? Or any more coats, even though I hadn't even photographed them and coat season is technically over?

"Strap on a pair!" my inner voice ordered me. "Fill that last box NOW! Before you can think about it! Just grab anything and throw it in the box!" I did as the voice told me (the things it commands me to do are not always so benevolent), as fast as I could. Lo and behold, the level of folded material grew higher until it was nearly level with the top. I had three enormous boxes filled with over 100 pieces vintage men's and women's vintage clothing, including macrame belts, 1950s lace dresses, even a few designer pieces in small sizes.

My karma prevents me from being able to sell anything small-sized. I don't know why.

I don't know which is worse: the fact that the boxes barely made a dent in the amount of vintage around here, or that they haven't sold. The Boxes, as I think of them, mocked me every time I walked through the front hall to the bedroom or the kitchen, especially when one of my cats perches on them. Which they like to do. The listing sat, with five watchers, in my store.

Today, in preparation for Thanksgiving, a helper and I moved EVERYTHING out of the front hall and into our home office (which is one half of our living room). "Keep The Boxes in the front!" I told him. "They might get sold!"

Pathetic, huh?

They are really big boxes.

Silk Velvet

Textile historians don't really know the date when silk velvets were first made and traded but they were carried along the fabled Chinese Silk Road that ran to and from Italy in the 12th century.

Romans likely first encountered silk in an expansion campaign against the Parthians in 53 B.C. The Romans kept exploring into what we know today as China. Trade was brisk between Asia and Persia and also with Egypt and around the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.

Chinese silk fabrics were traded in Venice as early as the 9th century, and the velvet manufacturing center of the world eventually became Florence, Venice and Genoa. These city-states dominated velvet manufacturing, as did Siena and Lucca until the 19th century.

In Persian textile history during the 11th and 13th centuries, silk brocades and velvets were used for clothing and home decoration elements.

We likely all know that blue "jeans" takes its name from Genoa, which made the wonderful indigo dyed cotton fabric. Velvet is an Italian word made from "vello", meaning fleece, and "velluto", meaning velvety or fleecy.

The way velvet catches the light, and seems to change color with every movement, it captivates royals and servants alike. When we think of festive fabrics and clothes, velvet always comes to mind. Silk is a traditional fabric of luxury and silk velvet is an especially alluring combination of shine and softness exuding drama and splendor.

Before WWII silk was quite common in American fashions because of our trade with China and Japan. Silk fabrics were produced in New Jersey during the 1800's. The US industry then had to look for silk substitutes, leading to the invention of nylon, as well as the increased use of older "synthetic silks", both rayon and acetate.

Silk velvet is a rather sheer and luxurious fabric and a joy to see, to feel, and to wear. Featuring design elements of the late 30s and early 40s, these 2 silk velvet dresses are in wonderful large sizes!

Make it A Sequined Season

Sequins are back! Not that they ever really left, but there was that time in the 80s....brightly colored sequins were everywhere, even on workout wear.

Black or colored sequins are the way to go this holiday season. You can find sequins on dresses in Topshop and by Alexander McQueen.

I love this Robert Rodriguez shift dress. The ultimate in simplicity but with enough sparkle when you walk in the room AND when you walk out of the room. Actually, you sparkle from every angle. You can't go wrong!
Or this vintage 70s pink one-shoulder sequined gown with stunning white scroll pattern. This is not for the shy gal ! :-) Available at Some Like it Vintage.com

If all-over sequins are a bit much for you, go for a sequined clutch purse. Here are two from our shop: Black sequined envelope clutch purse or a silver sequined with drop beads on the right.

Now all you need are some dancing shoes....

New Party Wear and One FABULOUS Suit!

I've just added two terrific dresses, with two distinct attitudes, for the holidays ~
Also for your approval, an amazing Navy Blue Wool Gabardine Suit in EXCELLENT condition - and it's a comfortable size L/XL~

Stunning friends forever

Each of them were striking in their own way. There was Eva, with her flashing green eyes and bountiful red hair in a dress of seafoam green brocade that hugged her luscious figure.

Not to be outdone there was LaRue, with her violet eyes and coal black naturally curly hair in a putty brocade that complimented her broad shoulders, long waist and even longer legs.

But let's not forget Helen, with eyes of brown and honey blonde hair in a mocha latte taffeta dress that accentuated her hourglass shape and tiny waist

Lana Turner & James Galanos

No, they don't really have anything in common, except for the fact that they were both in Hollywood at the same time. One designed clothing and the other wore it extremely well.

The only connection they have is the fact that I got this wonderful Imitation of Life Photo Album and the Simply Stunning Chantilly Lace GALANOS Dress at the same Estate Sale. And as I was photographing and writing the listings for both I couldn't help but notice the similarity of the Lace dress Miss Turner is wearing and the Galanos Lace Dress.

That's the only connection..............except for the fact that both Turner and Galanos were outstanding in their fields.

The album was sent to the jeweler who supplied the $1,000,000 worth of jewelry worn by Lana in the film and there are 17 photos in the album with the cover letter. The album is currently listed at cemetarian on eBay.

The dress is one of the most exquisite garments I have ever had in my hands. The craftsmanship is beyond anything I have ever seen. It will be available on Monday, Nov 24th on cemetarian on eBay.

Reader Question - Christian Dior Belt

Hi! I received an email this morning from blog reader Jamie, who is trying to find info on a recent purchase. Here is her letter, please post reply below or you can email her directly -

I am thrift store addict and recently purchased this Christian Dior
belt for about 60 cents. I usually try to research my purchases
on-line but really haven't found anything about this leaf buckle belt.
It has Christian Dior 1840 stamped in gold on the belt lining (I think
you can see this in the picture). The leaf buckle has a clasp that
attaches in the middle. Does anyone know anything about this belt
(time period for one thing)?

Thanks again,
Jaime

The History of Ski Clothes

I've just finished a series on the history of ski clothing on my blog, the Vintage Traveler. As I like to say, you don't have to ski in order to love the clothes! The photo is of a 1930s/40s Sonja Henie Ski suit, courtesy of wearitsatvintage.

How to Dress Up Your Hair for the Holidays

See all the authentic vintage ideas at the Couture Allure Blog today! Shown above: Use a single chandelier earring to dress up your up-do.

Hollygab Needs You

I have been blogging since last May and I'm working on a few regular features for my blog, Hollygab. I'd love to have vintage dealers participate in these features and I'm here to ask for your help.

One of my monthly features is called CLECKTIONS: What Do You Collect?. You can see past editions here. If you've got a collection that you'd like to show off, please contact me. I'm interested in anything you collect, but I'm specifically interested in collections that focus on vintage items.

I also try to do a feature every Friday (and I'm very bad at keeping up with it) called I Gots The Wants! I trawl eBay for things I want and highlight them in a round-up style post. Next week, I plan to do the Website Edition of I Gots The Wants. I want to see your items! I'm reprinting a (slightly) revised copy of this week's edition here so you can see how it works. All images are clickable and editorial content is all mine. I have no affiliation with the sellers, so I can't endorse the items entirely, but some of you I do know and adore.

Won't you please send me a link to any of your items on your website that you think might inspire the "wants" in me? I'd love to browse your site and show you off on my blog! Thanks!

I've been extremely sporadic with I Gots The Wants and one reason is because the search on eBay is totally wonky. I mean, it is not just wonky, it's so wonky it's like Kentucky Wonkified Chicken! (Don't blame me for that one. I sometimes like to pretend I'm Tracy Jordan from 30Rock.)

Speaking of Kentucky Fried--I must interject with this photo to which I raise my original recipe fried chicken leg in a rousing gesture of supreme approval. Check this out!

You can bid on this K-Fried chandelier (weirder words have never been put together) on eBay now, by the way. And yeah, speaking of eBay, my searches have been riddled with much frustration. Fool that I am, I sometimes forget to opt out of the "new search experience" on eBay and once I do remember to opt out, I have to start my search again. If the new search experience is meant to force me to search anew again, then hooray, eBay! You've done it! You've made me start searching, opt out and then start again which basically makes anyone who's sane decide to just quit searching because it's supposed to be fun, not tediously annoying.

Let me just get this out in the open in case I'm being obtuse. This new search experience on eBay pretty much chaps my arse. I'm not finding things easily. This is the innerwebs, people. This is eBay, folks, not the flea market. Please don't make me root around in dusty piles of stuff and dig for buried treasure when all I really want to do is find that certain thing that matches the keywords I've put into the search field.

Is this a rant? Why no!

It's I Gots the Wants. To make up for my failure to produce this feature more regularly, I've compiled a whole lotta wants! Remember--most of these end soon so you'd better get bidding if you get the wants! Okay. Let's go!

WANTS!

[Ring...rrring...ring!]

Hello? Roberta di Camerino handbag? Hi! This is your friend, Holly.

Oh, sure you remember me. We met a few years ago. I was at that party and I was talking about how great it was to find you in a thrift store, but how it was sorta sad because you were just a wallet and what I really wanted was a handbag....remember that?

Yeah, I know. I know. I was really not very nice to the velvet wallet I had and now it's sitting in the bottom of my dresser drawer, but this time, I promise I won't let you get all dirty. I won't get coffee on you and I won't throw you in the back seat or set you on the counter in the bathroom of Target.

What's that? Oh, believe me. I really am sorry and I do apologize for being messy. But listen, RDC purse...I swear. If you let me have you, I'll keep you out of the rain, snow and sleet and only carry you when I'm visiting smart people who will know the power and style that is inherent in owning something as perfect as you. I'll dust you off at night and put you into your own special dust bag and I'll never ever let anyone be mean to you again!

Huh? Oh, No. Go ahead. Take that other call. No problem. I'll hold...

[Click.]

WANTS! Eleven inches square and coming to bite your face off, it is -- Needlepoint Cat Pillow II: Electric Bugaloo.

WANTS! So elegant, so Danish, so modern, so rosewood finish, so sad, so expensive. (Plus, I just got a cute new desk on Craigslist that looks like this except it is white.) You should take a look at this auction, though. This desk is really gorgeous. If you're in the market for one, I'd say this is primo.

WANTS! Young man painting might not be from the '20s. He looks like he's wearing a Beacon blanket robe from the 40s. There's not much going on in this portrait that leads me to think of the 1920s, but I can't tell. I'll take him, anyway. I'd like to add that I'd like him stretched and in a nice black frame. (That's what she said.)

WANTS! And speaking of Beacon blanket robes, I couldn't help but notice these terrible photos of this very wonderful Beacon blanket robe. Let me tell you something. If you have one of these robes, you will be kept very warm. These robes get better with age, too. They become softer and filled with more blankety goodness. I have owned two and am soon going to buy another when the right one comes along. I am passing on this because I think you really do have to feel them to know if they're good. (Sometimes, they're not soft. They feel kind of rough and icky.) Plus, I think I like the ones that look more like Indian blankets. But this one is nice.

WANTS! This is a lovely suit. It's made by Lilli Ann and it has a wonderful signature print lining. (Save this link to the Lilli Ann site. It's a good reference.)

WANTS! How's about this sexy shelf-bust crumb catcher dress? Yeowza! (Pssst...don't you think it's 50s, not 40s?)

WANTS!

Dear Santa,

You know where I live, right? If you loved me you would get this incredible Paganne dress for me.

WANTS! I have been thinking that I'd like something like this. Actually, I was thinking of one of those all white Saarinen type tulip end tables, but I think this is better. I think this has a lot of possibility as a side table in my livingroom. If only I wasn't broke. I also like this base for a side table. It's so over the top which is why I love Hollywood Regency style. (Hey...anyone have a good Hollywood Regency style book to recommend?)

WANTS! A certain someone wants a certain cobalt blue dress with some certain fox fur trim.

WANTS! I love good leopard print. (With leopard prints, there is good and there is bad. Find the good in many vintage garments, find the bad at Hot Topic.) I have a great leopard jacket that I like to wear with pants. You can bet this one would be so great with jeans, too.

WANTS! Yellow is not my color, but I do adore these Mexican appliquéd jackets. This one would be charming with a thin pencil skirt or wide legged dark jeans. I'd be very tempted to wear cobalt blue under it or some wonderful multi-colored print.

WANTS! This is pretty! And easy to wear. It seems like it would be fun dressy dress because it wouldn't take a lot of effort to make it look stunning. And, I love how the waist is seamed and styled.

WANTS! Just because this isn't the best photo, don't be fooled into thinking these are not super saucy 40s pajamas. They're pinup worthy and I'd take them in a red hot minute in my size. If you haven't found out how great wide legged 40s pajamas are, I implore you to find a pair and lounge around in them. I also implore you not to run in them because sometimes (or so I've heard) you can trip on the wide leg and rip the pants. That's the sort of thing I've heard about that makes some girls yell, "Sheeet! On no! Not the jammies!!" Not that it's ever happened to me.

WANTS! One last lovely to lust after--a very pretty necklace.

Tune in next Friday for the next installment of I Gots The Wants: Website Edition. Got something on your website that you think might be right for "I Gots The Wants?" Send your link to us by clicking here.

An Interview with Carol of Dandelion Vintage

<>

As most of you already know, Carol is the brains behind the Vintage Bulletin blog and is our gracious virtual vintage hostess here.

I first met Carol years ago on eBay, as a customer, and soon signed up for her weekly newsletters for her web site, DandelionVintage.com. Her newsletters have come faithfully every Monday for all of these years. It not only lets you know about the newest vintage goodies on her site, but also tell fun snippets of whatever is going on in her world at the moment. For instance, I remember when she first got her bulldog, Boris, and read all about his puppy exploits.

I thought it'd be fun for readers of the Vintage Bulletin to get to know her better, and fun for me as well.

* * *

Joan: Carol, as I recall, you were one of the first vintage dealers to set up shop on the web with a stand-alone web site. What year did you open your virtual doors, and what major differences do you note from then as opposed to 2008?

Carol: I started out in mid-1997 with a site selling my crafts. Then I added a page to the site with of some of my own vintage clothing for sale. The first page had about 10 items, and there probably wasn't anything over $20. For some reason I just started focusing on that rather than the crafts, and just kept adding more of the vintage that I had collected and hoarded for years. Dandelion Vintage kind of became official in December of 1997.

There weren't many vintage clothing sites around at that time, that made it hard because shoppers weren't necessarily looking for vintage clothing online. It wasn't until I started also selling on eBay in March of 1998 that sales started to pick up, and vintage shopping began to grow online. The first item that I sold on my website was a pair of 1960s Faux Leopard Fur pants. The first item sold on eBay was a 1950s midnight blue velvet coat. Both items had once been mine, although I never actually wore the leopard pants! I sold on both my website and eBay for about 8 years. Then I stopped selling vintage on eBay 2 years ago, because of the changes that were starting there at that time. I didn't see a long-lasting future for me selling vintage on eBay, so I stopped selling there and put the whole focus on selling at my website. I worked in retail for 10 years and I think that experience was a big help in making my vintage business successful.

The online vintage market now is hard again because there are so many vintage sellers out there, and new ones are starting everyday. I just stay focused on what I know my customers want. I'm kinda 'old school vintage' and I don't follow trends or current styles. I stick to the classics.

Joan: I've always wondered how you got into vintage (and when) and how you decided on Dandelion Vintage as your name. Dandelions are such cute, cheerful things, it's a very appealing name to me.

Carol: I grew up around collectibles and antiques. My parents bought and sold antiques since I was very small. They started out collecting bottles here in South Jersey. I can remember going on bottle digs on old farms. Before there was trash pick-up, people buried their trash out on their farms including bottles, cans etc. So my parents would go out to old farms and dig for old bottles. My father collected soda bottles (not Coke and Pepsi, the old 1800s soda bottles) my mother collected ink bottles and they started a collection of baby bottles for me (the old flat oval type of baby bottles, not the type most people are familiar with).

My parents were always dragging me along to auctions, flea markets and bottle shows in the NJ, PA, NY area and sometimes beyond. Reningers, Englishtown, Shupp's Grove etc. were places we went to nearly every weekend. When they set up to sell, I would play under the table with my toys.

Of course when I was a teenager that all became very 'uncool.' But in my later teens I became interested in thrift shops and started buying vintage clothing to escape the Jordache jeans and Flash dance sweatshirt crazes of that time. I used to buy whatever vintage clothing I saw that was cool and cheap. Even if I didn't wear it, I just hung it in my closet. My parents lost interest in bottles and started collecting other things, only selling a few times a year. Now my dad only sell once a year at the Hershey Car show, he's retired and he collects Ford car stuff now. My mom collects dolls, Victorian clothing, beaded purses and baby clothing.

Dandelion Vintage, should I tell this story and reveal what a fan-dork I am? Before vintage, before crafts, in the late 1980s I made clothing. Mostly cotton-lycra club clothing. I've never been in a nightclub, I'm not that great of a sewer, but I had wild ideas for club-style-clothing and started this little business and called it 'Dandelion Green'. I was, and still am a huge U2 fan, I think I have mellowed over the years though, I'm not as fanatical as I used to be. I was in my early 20s then, and U2 were starting to be really big. I had liked them for several years by then and I read about their history in several books. The first shows they played were at this farmer's market in Dublin called the 'Dandelion Market' and I've seen it referred to as the 'Dandelion Green' too. I liked the name, and used it as my clothing name. I used it for the craft business too and then it just became Dandelion Vintage when the vintage started. Sometimes I wish I had gone with something different, but I own it now, literally. So it's here to stay!

Joan: What pieces in your own wardrobe are your favorites? The ones you would absolutely never ever part with, not even if Tim Gunne asked you to.

Carol: Probably my day dresses and sweaters. I'm already missing Summer because I can't wear most of my Day dresses. I have this thing where I don't like to wear 'nude' color stockings, I only wear black stockings and alot of my Summer dresses don't look right with black stockings. I love my sweaters during the cold weather. Tim Gunn wouldn't like anything in my wardrobe because I don't follow any current trends and I'm pretty anti-label in my own wardrobe, even with new clothing.

I used to collect silk and rayon pajamas, robes and loungewear from the 1920-30s, and I still have several pieces from the collection that I'll probably never part with. Here's one piece -

Joan: This is probably a tough question to answer, but of the many vintage goodies on your site, which are your top 5 personal favorites, and why?

Carol:

#FAB17- Dusty Peach floral Crepe Gown & cape -

http://www.dandelionvintage.com/30-1.html

I love this gown and cape. It came from the estate of Jessie Laurent Harper who was a milliner in Harlem. This was one of the older pieces in the group and one of the last pieces that I have from her. I love the style and the fabric is very cool.

#30-67- Black silk robe with gold cord dragons -

http://www.dandelionvintage.com/30-2.html

This was the type of robes that I used to collect so I really like it.

#BL-437- Maurice Rentner Wide sleeved dress -

http://www.dandelionvintage.com/6g2.html

Awesome rayon dress that has great style.

#V-671- Red Nylon Plisse Sundress and Jacket Set -

http://www.dandelionvintage.com/6d.html

I love the 1940s and I love these Sun dresses with fitted jackets. I'd wear them all the time if I could find enough of them in my size.

#L-171- Peachy Coral Sheer over Pale Pink Nylon Nightgown -

http://www.dandelionvintage.com/16-6.html

I also love the 2 black rayon chiffon gowns on this page, but I chose the peachy nylon nightgown as my favorite-favorite because I love the color combo of the sheer coral over pale pink. So pretty and feminine.

Joan: I mentioned your bulldog, Boris, in the intro. A recent addition to your family is the rapidly growing and adorable puppy Harlow, and I know you had another bulldog, Miss Fatty. Obviously bulldogs are your favorite breed. What is it about them that has captured your heart?

Carol: Both my dad and I had always liked English Bulldogs. Previously we had Bassetts, and then Newfoundlands. Bulldogs are just so funny and have great personalities. I was a kid when we had the other dogs so I don't think I paid as much attention to them as I have with the bulldogs. Bulldogs refuse to be ignored!

Joan: Some people may not be aware that you're something of a local historian, specifically about Strathmere, a charming small town on a little island just off of the Jersey Shore. Local history is a passion of mine, too, and I became fascinated with Strathmere and its history through you. How did you become so interested in the history of Strathmere?

Carol: Strathmere is just this cool, old fashioned seashore town. So many towns at the Jersey Shore have been built up, modernized, overdeveloped. But Strathmere is fighting against that, trying to stay a quiet, small, private town. It's very small, has some beautiful old homes and it just has this magical power over people who spend time there. You never want to leave and people that you talk to feel the same way about it. I started a website about Strathmere about 6 years ago with the items that we and friends who lived there had collected. From there, people began to share stories and photos with me and the website just grew. A labor of love sounds corny, but that's really what it is. Over the past few years I've come to love the town even more, because of learning things and meeting people through my website and because we live closer to it now and I can go there anytime I want.

* * *

Here's a link to Carol's Strathmere web site, with an extensive history. It's a fascinating read for any history buff, so be sure to have a nice cup of coffee or tea and the time to settle back for a long and interesting read.

http://www.strathmere.net/

Thanks so much for taking the time to share with us, Carol!

Oh, The Weather Outside Is Frightful

Unless you've been in hibernation for the past week, then you know that most of the country is under a deep freeze. If you're defiant against cranking up the heat (like me!) and your teeth are chattering, then you might as well look mighty good doing it! Be chilly no more, wrap your fabulous self in vintage cardigans, now listed at Fast Eddie's Retro Rags, where we usually carry on average 20 vintage 1950's- early 60's cardigans and sweaters to choose from! See? I've got your back this winter.

Behold! A few samples of what you'll find:

Vintage 50's/60's 3-D Embroidered Strawberries Angora Cardigan Sweater:

Vintage 50's Rhinestone Butterfly Applique Cashmere Cardigan Sweater:

Now I know Why I love Tulle

My love for all things vintage 40's and 50's started here, with my Mother, Beverly. A fashion statement from a young age.

So it's no surprise that I am now into vintage clothing, costuming, drama and all things related. I gravitate to tulle party dresses. After finding this picture of my Mom this week, I understand why:

In my eBay store:

Love you Mom, always a starlet to me!!

Join Our Club

From Sasha at Violet Folklore

What is it with me lately? Though I consider my ideal (modern) fashion era to be somewhere around 1963 or 1964 (think the Space Age dreaming of the Sexual Revolution), lately my tastes have taken a strange turn. Like a lovesick fool, I am falling all over myself in a nearly embarrassing way for vintage clothing from the 1980s that exudes a preppy, posh snobbery-- the more gold chains, equestrian references, and red plaid, the better!!! The weirdest thing is, although I didn't notice it at first, when I looked at all of my favorite scores I noticed that single every piece just HAPPENS to have the word "Club" in the brand name! Two Hunt Club scores in one day, and then this, the Ultimate:

Weird, eh? The economy is tanking, and my own financial portfolio has never consisted of more than some really great, well, receipts (round trip plane ticket to Australia to follow The Cure, anyone?)-- even during the most booming of times. I've never owned a horse or a new car, and the only club I've ever been in was French Club in high school. Am I inadvertently applying a New Age "Power of Positive Thinking" philosophy to my fashion choices (as in, if I dress rich, I will BE rich, a la the Law of Attraction)? Or am I looking at my bucolic surroundings with the eye of someone who has been reading a LOT of fashion magazines lately, and deciding that I want to be a "Country Gentlewoman" instead of a hick? (I do truly love the articles that show up in Vogue that feature so-and-so flitting effortlessly about their estate in the English countryside dressed in tweed and burnished leather...!)

Really, though, the strongest contender for this change in my taste is something infinitely more embarrassing to admit. Once a week Chris and I go over to our TV-owning friend's house for a very important date: pizza, beer and, well...

Gossip Girl.

C'mon ladies, you know what I'm talking about. I will vouch for the solid writing (I call it Jane Austen in fast forward), but what would the show be without Chuck Bass and his amazing outfits?

Um, yeah. And although I find most of the ladies getups to be WAY to modern for my tastes, sometimes Blair Waldorf, queen of the preppies, hits the nail right on the head:

With the red lace tights?!?! Oh no she didn't!

Well, my secret is out now. A bit surprising, if you know me and my (lazy) socialist ways at all. But come to think of it, this isn't the very first time a hardcore preppy look has bowled me over. Does anyone remember this?:

Yes, that's Audrey Horne in Twin Peaks. She makes quite an argument for wool sweater and plaid skirts. It's an argument that has been made for many decades now, and I was lucky to score some amazing pleated wool skirts from the 60s this weekend.. you'll see em in the store soon, if I can bear to part with them...
Meanwhile I love how Amber rocks this brown hounds-tooth sweater (you know how I feel about the hounds-tooth!) that I found last week. So distinguished! So sophisticated!

You won't find me fox hunting or puffing on a pipe in a wood-paneled library any time soon (at least, by my best guess.... and definitely no on the fox hunting!), but if you see me dressing Above My Station, please be understanding. These clothes are just coming to me, and I can't fight my destiny. I am putting the Club back in Country.

Madonna, naturally

P.S. Dear Universe, I need a riding hat, and I need it now.

xoxo

Gunne Sax Sunday

From Sasha at Violet Folklore

Some days really are prettier than others, and the same can be said for dresses. Gunne Sax and Gunne Sax style dresses are timeless classics, and Amber and I seem to have the BEST luck finding them (knock on wood). I guess it's because we live in Northern California, the home of Gunne Sax... but rational explanations aside, every time we find one we feel like we have won a prize. They are so well-made, so creative, and so photogenic--I mean, just look at this one below! Thank goodness they don't all fit, or else we would hoard them for an eternity, and that just wouldn't be fair!

Pict0201

Here they are together, that gorgeous day and those gorgeous dresses... thanks to Chris, who was my patient photographer!

Pict0057

I just love this dreamy dress, made in a Gunne Sax style. It's the perfect excuse to look as beautiful as a bride without actually getting married!

Pict0021

Everyone needs a pair of bloomers under their dress... I swear by them in the winter! I've already got my own, so I put these in the shop for one lucky lady!

Pict0111

Serious Sasha with banjo...

Pict0130

...and then I started singing!

Who can keep a straight face for long when they are holding a banjo??? I just can't wait to see what adventures this sweet dress will go on when it finds its perfect owner!

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!

Mollie Parnis Designers to First Ladies

Born to a poor immigrant family in New York City before the turn of the century, she started working at odd jobs when she was 8 years old, and eventually built a multimillion-dollar dress business. But her interests ranged well beyond her Garment District cutting rooms. She became a skilled collector of art and of people and contributed some of her fortune to the beautification of New York and Jerusalem.

Dresses she designed were worn by First Ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Betty Ford. Lady Bird Johnson became a a close friend and one year, one of Miss Parnis's designs was bought by four Kennedys in four separate cities.

In her office, Miss Parnis kept photographs of First Ladies wearing her designs posed with their husbands, as well as a signed photograph of Lyndon B. Johnson in a shirt she had made for him. To four Presidents, she was Mollie, but as often as she was invited to the White House, she said she could never get over the thrill of being in what she called "the President's house." Simple Beginning.

Mad Men - 60's Fashion Redux

Dear Fellow Vintage Hearts,

Who would think that proper 60's fashion would be hot again? We've already had a resurgence of hippie style fashion in the late 90's and thankfully, that hasn't really gone away. But traditional and higher fashions from the 60's haven't really caught the eye of fashionistas as viable and hot vintage clothing to wear today. That is until 'Mad Men' came along.

The AMC hit drama show and Golden Globe winner 'Mad Men', has made more traditional 60's fashion sexy and most certainly, coveted. The L.A. Times covered this topic with a November 2 article titled, " 'Mad Men' leads a revival in vintage clothing", and it's a great read. Skinny ties and dashing fedora's for men; wiggle dresses and gorgeous vintage jewelry for women. These are but a few examples of how to incorporate the 'Mad Men' style into your wardrobe.

We love that this vintage fashion has been brought to the forefront by those who recognize it's inherent beauty and are willing to wear it proudly. Consider joining them by adding small pieces to your everyday wear. A vintage necklace or sweater with those jeans...a vintage hat with your skirt and blouse. Before you know it, you'll be wearing full on suits and dresses from this era and we'll be applauding you!

Give it a try! And if you haven't watched the show, it had it's second season finale on October 26. But we're sure that AMC will be running both seasons or at least season 2 over the next month or two. It's great television and if you love fashion, it's pure eye candy!

Want to own a vintage site? Try Lone Star Vintage Clothing

I love vintage just as much as the rest of you do, but with sadness I have decided to sell my beloved website (and inventory), Lone Star Vintage Clothing.

I have my BFA in Fashion Design and actually own and operate another site where I design infant and children's apparel. With 2009 coming so quickly, I really want to put more focus into my design work and hopefully get my items into boutiques across the country. I will be working with a factory overseas and hopefully free up some of my time, rather than creating everthing by hand as I do now.

With that being said, I have listed my website Lone Star Vintage Clothing, all of my inventory and tons more that's not listed on my site, all graphics/logos that I've paid for, as well as all of my time and effort that I spent building my business. I love vintage and I know I will still go to estate sales and buy things, but I can't place all of my focus on selling anymore.

If anyone knows of anyone who just might be interseted, please contact me at texasbargaindepot (!@) hotmail (dot) com.

My listing is here.

Are Vintage and Marital Bliss Compatible?

"You have to get that stuff out of here!"

That has been my husband's battlecry for...oh, dear, probably about three years. And yet during that time, my vintage collection has slowly grown, despite the best efforts of declutterers, organizers, personal poverty...

And it's just my luck that I live with the heterosexual equivalent of Felix Unger. (Don't kid me, you knew back then, didn't you?) His other saying? "Wash your hands!" And it's not just about vintage. Anything I've touched--computer keyboard, doorknob, the dog--is grounds for immediate cleansing. And it's just his luck that he lives with the female equivalent of Oscar Madison.

Here is our book-lined gallery in 2006:

Note the single clothing rack.

And a full length shot of our living room/home office, with my "Ebay store" made from Elfa shelving on the left side behind the divan.

Here is a more, uh, current shot of the gallery:

And a picture of the home office:

I'd call it airing my dirty laundry, but it's more like airing my about-to-be-washed laundry. Despite my best efforts, piles surround us in every room, and my husband complains that our apartment does not feel like a home. What to do?

For one thing, I have decided to liquidate as much of my inventory as possible in the next six months. Problem is, most of it is too nice to go for bargain basement prices.

However, yesterday, I spent hours filling three HUGE boxes with men's and women's vintage coats, clothes, accessories and lingerie, then listed it on Ebay as a mystery grab bag. I still have about two feet of space in one box, which will be filled! My husband's main request was that the rack finally move out of the gallery. The only problem is, this is what had to replace it:

Oh, well, who needs to read anyway? At least you can see (most) of the floor.

It would have been more gratifying if my husband had noticed the rack was gone when he came in from work last night, but you can't have everything.

For all of you vintage sellers out there, contact me if you would like to buy stuff below cost. I would really like to see my bookshelves again!

Va Va Vintage Voom!

From Amber at Violet Folklore

If I do say so myself, we have got some seriously sexy pieces of vintage clothing for sale right now. Check out our newest model Lucia (gorgeous mama to two-year-old Malakai and world's most amazing massage giver) in this FABULOUS 1950s lingerie made by Eyeful by the "Flaums". I like to think of her as luscious Lucia:

Dsc00082

Dsc00085

And, as always, our Violet Folklore Original Model (va va VFOM!) Sarah Jane was posing up a storm at our last shoot and looking devastatingly hot in each shot (the girl does not take a bad photo). Here she is in an 80s Brass Plum by Nordstrom little black dress (check her Volvo in the background- Nevada County's vehicle of choice!):

Dsc00099

Dsc00051

Lucia, Sarah, and I spent the entire two hours of the photo shoot which produced the above two shots shouting from behind the camera "Gorgeous! You are amazing! SO sexy! Oh my god girl those legs... etc." This project has turned out to be a boost to the self esteem of all of us previously inexperienced models! (Not that there aren't hilariously hideous shots of all of us hanging out somewhere in my iPhoto folders...)

Here's Sasha in a straight sultry 100% silk 80s Dynasty-style dress:

Dsc00050_2

Dsc00055_2

Ooooh another amazing piece of lingerie! This one takes it back even further in time to the 1940s, when Van Raalte was producing the finest lingerie around. The color and lace detailing on this are just spectacular:

Our resident pixie Cynthia recently rocked this little 80s teddy:

Kinda makes you wanna grab a little afternoon delight, don't it? (Love the 70s styling in these videos):

A Difference of Opinion

When I think or "Dream" of Vintage I think of a full tulle skirt dress, preferably pink with an amazing fur wrap and your Grandmothers pearl ensemble and the dreaded beehive.

For others Vintage has the definition of this amazing Leather and Studded Gothic Punk Coat recently listed at Bellajadore Vintage Couture. When I handle this coat this is so heavy with metal then I think about the time it took too create this jacket and I am impressed.
http://www.mainstreetvintage.com/listingview.php?num=6619&ref=58

For others the definition might be a simple pair of sneakers: http://www.mainstreetvintage.com/listingview.php?num=6624&ref=58

Or possibly this newly listed Leopard print gown:http://www.mainstreetvintage.com/listingview.php?num=6621&ref=58

For any definition or style please look at the great items we have at Bellajadore Vintage Couture, located at Main Street Mall "MSMO".

Why We Wear Poppies-Remembrance Day

Lest we forget.

November 11 is a somber day. As I watch the ceremonies on the morning news, the day begins to take shape as a humble one. It is so easy to take freedom and security for granted.

Why do we wear poppies? The Reverend Ed Hird of St. Simon's Anglican Church in North Vancouver, British Columbia explains:

"During World War One, Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae, of Guelph Ontario, heroically served as brigade-surgeon to the First Brigade of the Canadian Forces Artillery. With the introduction by the enemy of poison gas, John McCrae worked night and day for seventeen days straight, not even stopping to change his clothes. At times the dead and wounded actually rolled down the bank from above his Yser Canal dugout. McCrae wrote home 'We are weary in body and wearier in mind. The general impression in my mind is one of a nightmare'.

The day before John McCrae wrote 'In Flanders Fields', one of his closest friends was tragically killed and buried in a grave decorated with only a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies were already flourishing between the crosses that marked those silent graves. In Flanders Fields" was first published in December, 1915 in England's 'Punch' magazine. Within months, "In Flanders Fields" became the most popular poem about the First World War. Translated in several languages, it was used in a 1917 Canadian campaign to help with the war effort, an effort which remarkably raised over 400 million dollars.

Three years later a New York City YMCA worker, Moina Michael decided to begin wearing a poppy in memory of the millions who died on the battlefield. Thanks to a 1920 visit to New York, Madame Guerin of France learned of the New York City poppy. The poppy symbol so inspired her that upon returning to France, she made handmade poppies to raise money for French children made destitute by World War 1. From there, the poppies spread like wildfire around the world."

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

Please wear your poppy today.

Stylin' The Menfolk & Images From Yesterday's Shoot

From Amber at Violet Folklore

Our most recent photo shoot incorporated a brand new element into the Violet Folklore repertory- men. Sasha and I had wanted to sell vintage men's clothing since the inception of this project but had been putting it off in order to get the women's stuff rolling first. But the time has arrived! And the men have too. Not only were we lucky enough to have Seth modeling for us yesterday:

11070091

11070046

But we were also lucky enough to have my partner Graham around to help us be more organized than we have ever been before at a shoot and to watch after our daughter (he and Seth have been BFFs since they were little):

Pict0122

But it gets better! We also had Zack hanging out to help us style the clothes- and what a fabulous job he did, as you can see here in Cynthia's outfit:

Pict0304

And here's a little perview of what's to come. First the winter wear. These jackets are all spectacular, but the Levi's snow suit purchased in the 1970s at local posh ski resort Boreal is really the stand out item (tag still attached!):

Some snuggly and stylish sweaters to feast your eyes upon (the last one was purchased is 1989 at the Beverly Hills Polo Club- swanky danky):

And, always my favorite, the dresses:

And there's plenty more where that came from! Some pieces are already up, and the rest will be there later in the week!

When vintage fits - my dilemma~

I hit a personal jackpot yesterday. I was enjoying a local flea market and found a great leather jacket that no one else had snapped up. A beautiful East West tan suede fitted jacket with the most amazing detailing ever! Two rows of ivory oval beads down either side of the front, intricate, colorful beading in leather laced circles at the front below the shoulders, on the sleeves and at the back, and matching beading at the back collar. I might pop it into my store, but I have one little problem.
IT FITS LIKE A GLOVE!!!!!!

This is my biggest dilemma when shopping for my store. I try something on and, of course, if it fits it's in my collection. My collection is overflowing and I can't possibly wear all my beautiful pieces in even 2 or 3 lifetimes~

I'm down with a nasty cold, but I will add photos of this marvelous jacket soon!

Steps of a Vintage Shop-aholic

The first step to recovery is knowing there is a problem right?

Any vintage shopper knows the classic steps. Here they are.

1. The inspiration. You need that specific look or piece to finish an outfit.
2. The adventure of the hunt. Choosing the store, estate sale or auction to attend.
3. The panic. Needing to be the first one down the aisles, hoping no one else spots that perfect piece.
4. The thrill of the find. Holding your treasure with an iron grip.
5. The exit. Leave the store and head for home...fast and with a smile on your face and a sense of relief in your heart. You know you are the only one in the world with that treasure.

Now get out there and happy shopping!

Here is some inspiration for you.

Cape of Great Love

From Amber & Sasha at Violet Folklore

We recently added the most spectacular, well constructed, breathtakingly gorgeous, and absolutely one-of-a-kind piece to our shop. Behold:

We debated for a while about whether or not one of us should keep it (and if so, which one?) or if we should indeed make it available to the world. As you know, we chose the latter, though there's no saying one of us won't take it down off the site in a fit of passionate jealousy at the thought of its loving embrace coddling another in its draping warmth.

And warm it truly is. Not only because of the exquisite Irish lamb's wool that it's made from, but the vibe of the colors also serve to invigorate a cold body and sluggish state of mind. And of course the pockets are there for added comfort and warmth.

And did I mention that it's all lined in silky satin? Of course it is, a piece like this would be made of nothing less.

The labels on this one tell a fabulous story:

First, a gorgeous label with the cutest cartoon of Boru, High King of Ireland, reading :
"Made in the Republic of Ireland/ Boru/ By Jimmy Hourihan of Dublin".

Next, a label detailing the cape's origins: "Donegal Handwoven Tweed, Made from pure new wool from County Donegal". Donegal Wool is some of the finest in the world. But it doesn't normally come in such unusual colors as this!

A serial code includes the year 1967, which was, on the West Coast of California (and so many other groovy places in the world), The Summer of Love!

So how did this incredible Irish creation find its way to the U.S.?

The last label tells that story: "I. Magnin". This was THE luxury department store in San Francisco, still enjoying a heydey in the late 60s with an extravagent flagship store in Union Square known affectionately as "The White Palace". Some of you West Coasters may share our amazing memories of I. Magnin glamor-- even if your mom and aunties were cash-strapped fashionistas, it was a tradition to go inside just to walk around among all the gorgeous clothes! In 1967, bright hippie colors had influenced high-end retail clothing design, so a cape like this would have been in high demand for the discriminating fashion fan.

I think this history explains a little about the amazing, classic lines of this piece, mixed with "flower children" colors. It walks a perfect line between freewheeling psychedelic reverie and the completely practical craftsmanship of a piece designed for winter warmth, made using the finest materials available.

As we finished up this love poem to the Incredible Cape, it was discovered by Ashley, the Vintage Fashion blogger at About.com, who featured it in a post about "Cape Fever". (Scroll down just a wee bit).

If we needed any confirmation, now we have it: there really is some special magic in this cape! We hate to let it go, but we're excited to give it a new home... we wouldn't open a store if we didn't like connecting beautiful pieces with real Vintage lovers! Of course, if it should accidentally get misplaced... ahem.

Vintage purses at Dandelion Vintage

I recently bought a large group of vintage purses, and so far I've added over 30 of them to the website www.dandelionvintage.com/12.html (with more to come next week)

The majority of them are pretty beaded purses or silver and gold purses, perfect for special occasions and the Holidays. I also have a nice selection of vintage bags for everyday use too.
Purses are probably the easiest piece of vintage to add to your everyday wardrobe. Even if I'm wearing all 'new' clothing, I'm still carrying a vintage bag. Plus, you can never have too many purses!

Here is a small selection of some of the bags currently available in my Purse Department

Bye for now, Carol

So Nice We Have It Twice! (& Sometimes Thrice...)

Recently we at The Spectrum were lucky enough to purchase a big haul of women's vintage clothing & shoes from the estate of a Compulsive Shopper.

Now, living with a CS can be a real nightmare but all you fellow vintie lovers know it's our dream to be able to find an estate sale where the family still has all of the stuff!

And, a true CS will purchase the same outfit in every color available & will sometimes be happy enough with simply buying it & having it & will never wear all of it.

That was the case with our haul, we had & have a lot of the same things in duplicates, triplicates or even more... most with the original store, size (& sometimes even the maker & fabric) tags.

Here are two fab 50s David Crystal tailored cotton jackets currently for sale on eBay, each in a different colorway.

Click here to see the one on the left

Also on eBay we have the same NWT 60s classic Mad Men style cocktail dress in black & in emerald green.

Click here for the black one - - - - - Click here for the green one

The main difference is the green one still has the original net crinoline & they are different sizes but other than that they are identical & perfect for the upcoming holiday parties.

Paisley: Not Just the Patchouli of Fashion

From Amber at Violet Folklore.

Ah, paisley. There is perhaps no other popular design motif that carries with it such a loaded stereotype as the carefree (irresponsible), free loving (promiscuous), free spirited (directionless), paisley-wearing hippie of the late 1960's and early 1970's. John Lennon, Hippie Icon Extraordinaire, even had his Rolls Royce painted with a paisley design in 1967. It was The Beatles foray to India, in fact, that launched the pattern into the catastrophic popularity that would secure its status as Bohemian Wardrobe Staple for decades to come.

But paisley enjoys a much longer and more interesting history than the annals of American pop culture would have us believe. The design is, in fact, of Babylonian/Persian origin, and dates back 3,000 years. Textile historians conjecture that the shape was modeled after the cypress tree, a Zoroastrian symbol of life and eternity. There are plenty of other possible inspirations mentioned for the shape in the literature- a tear drop, a palm leaf, a kidney, a mango seed, a leech, one half of the Yin Yang symbol, and on and on.

In the early 1700's the East India Company began importing textiles bearing the design into Europe. The name derives from the Scottish town of Paisley, whose weavers produced mass quantities of woolen shawls printed with the design in the early 1800's. A century and a half later paisley migrated across the Atlantic and now hangs in the closets of many a vintage lover, especially those of us with a weakness for boho and 70's styles.

Such as today's oh-so-hip celebrities, among whom paisley seems to be making quite the comeback here in the 00's, as evidenced by these photographs of Sophia Bush, Kate Hudson, and Catherine Zeta-Jones taken this summer and blogged about by Inside The Fashion (I absolutely LOVE Catherine's dress!):

We recently found a luxurious 1970's paisley print Oscar De La Renta house robe which will be up for sale soon! And here is another recently acquired vintage piece, a dress, the love of which inspired me to research paisley and post this blog. It is up for sale now at our Etsy shop.

(And you know what? I like patchouli too...)

Let Freedom Ring

Rudi Gernreich launched the No Bra Bra in 1964 at a time when the more structured padded, wired uplift bra was the norm. Gernreich conceived a soft, minimal sheer bra that went along with the often unstructured styles of the time, as well as with the many sheer fabrics and plunging necklines of the sexual revolution in the 1960's. He wanted the woman to be 'free' in clothing and garments in which breasts assumed their natural shape, rather than being molded into an aesthetic ideal. Gernreich produced pared down body-clothes in the 1960's aimed at what seemed to be the new woman of the era, freed of all constraints.

At Glamoursurf, we've recently acquired and listed the infamous 'No Bra' Bra in black from Rudi Gernreich along with some other vintage bras including a circle stitch 50's torpedo bra and some strapless bow bra's. Visit Glamoursurf today for your vintage lingerie!

Feathers!

I have a confession. I love feathers, fur coats and leather goods. (If my dog could talk, he would certainly have a thing or two to say about this.)

But the beauty of vintage is these items come guilt free - almost. Appreciating these types of items a second time around is much more humane than buying a brand new fur!

....the joy of etsy :-)

Hi, everyone! I've been getting a little bit more familiar with etsy and the offerings there. I've opened up a store, and have made some sales to FANTASTICO customers!

Why do I love etsy?

-people are uber friendly + responsive + helpful community forums
-it's so easy to list things for sale there, compared to some other sites I've sold on
-the offerings there are fabulous - I've found the cutest ever owl sweater there from
DANDELION VINTAGE and I've found the cutest ever giraffe sweater from RockyMountainRetro!

So I'm obviously into vintage novelty 70s sweaters right now. :) If you see any others let me know I'm game to grab them all up for myself!

My public shop on etsy is http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5615327.

Right now my own favorite pieces in store, perfect for fall is this 50's - 60's tile print alphabet cotton dress that would look perfect with a creme ivory cardigan! A steal at only $36.00!
