Autumn.....Time for Skirts and Sweaters

Cooler weather calls for digging the sweaters our of storage and thinking more about layers. And if you don't have just the perfect period piece to wear, there are many many instructions for re-creating those fabulous sweaters from years gone by. At cemetarian we have vintage knitting and crochet booklets with wonderful sweaters for both him and her.......young or not so young.

Chadwicks Red Heart, Mohair, Spinnerin are just a few of the brands as well as Annies Attic and McCall's.

Love this Botticelli and Raphael reference to the sweaters below.

And of course, what you wear under that sweater is as important as the sweater itself. And what better base for the perfect sweater than the perfect skirt. Long or short, Full or slim..or somewhere in-between.

And don't forget pants..........skinny pants, full legged pants, short pants just about any type of pants you want, you can find them in our Separates categories.

So come and visit our revamped website today. We're offering a "Under Construction" Sale to thank our fabulous customers for their patience while we redecorate and restructure the place. Just use the coupon code UC and receive 15% off. Good till the 15th of October at 11:59PM

Wholesale Lot of Vintage 1970s Tops

#LOT-1- Lot of 10 Tops and Blouses - $15.00

Era - from the 70s, maybe early 80s

Measurements - assorted sizes, most fits 34 to 36 inch bust, a few bigger.

Fabric - mostly polyesters

This is a group of 10 vintage tops that I am doing in a wholesale lot to move them out of here quickly. I bought a load of vintage clothing and these were mixed in. I'm not a big fan of this timeframe so I chose some pieces to wholesale to someone who might appreciate the timeframe more than I do! It's a nice lot for resale or your own wardrobe. All of the tops have already been machine washed by me, none have been ironed. They are all in very good to excellent condition. I noticed a wear spot on the solid yellow top. I didn't see anything noticeable on any others, but there may be some small spots or seams that need stitching.

Box will weigh about 5 pounds. I can SQUEEZE the tops into a Flat Rate box for $9.80, or I can ship them Parcel Post if the rate turns out to be cheaper to your area. The closer you are to Jersey, the cheaper the shipping.

You can purchase the lot using the button above or visit the website - Wholesale Top Lot

Meet the Vintage Fashion Guild

Meet the Vintage Fashion Guild

What is the Vintage Fashion Guild?
The Vintage Fashion Guild (VFG) is an international collective of people who are passionate and knowledgeable about vintage clothing. Founded in 2002 by a group of online vintage sellers, the group now also includes retail (brick-and-mortar) vintage sellers, stylists, designers, fashion editors, writers, journalists, vintage related bloggers, curators, researchers, historians and librarians of fashion history. The web site is our meeting place, and a place for the general public to explore many aspects of vintage fashion.

Why do people join VFG?
Our members are respected sellers and professionals, entitled to use the VFG logo, a symbol of trust and integrity recognized by buyers. Our site and its resources are constantly being updated and created by our members, providing an outlet for web publication. We strive to promote our member's work through featuring members on the home page, blogging about their accomplishments, featuring their books, and showcasing their offerings on our public forums and blogs. We are constantly thinking of new ways to promote VFG members.

How can people join VFG?
It is free to register on our public forums as a "visitor" of the VFG but if you are an experienced, professional seller, or are a vintage fashion professional in another field such as writing or museum work then you may want to take the next step and apply for trade membership.
There are guidelines for membership, which can be found on the membership applications.
http://www.vintagefashionguild.org/content/view/1073/229/

What does VFG do for buyers?
This is summed up in our mission statement:
The Vintage Fashion Guild's mission is to become the international voice of the vintage fashion industry and its leading authority. Its objectives are to:
- Protect the interests of vintage vendors and encourage good practice.
- Elevate the standard of dependability among sellers to stimulate buyers' and collectors' confidence that items are accurately represented in terms of age, style, details and condition.
- Raise awareness of vintage fashion and provide a forum to bring together buyers and sellers.
- Establish a central educational resource available to both buyers and sellers.
- Create a positive environment for and enhance the image of vintage clothing.
- Encourage the conservation and wearing of vintage fashion to preserve the history, availability and survival of vintage clothing in future years. The VFG discourages the habitual practice of modifying or altering existing vintage to suit the current trend.
- Position vintage clothing as a viable, attractive and environmentally-friendly alternative to conventional fashion.

the latest from The Family Vintage

We have recently come into a load of 1960's and 70's pieces from a sweet little old lady whose husband was employed with Butte Knit back in the day. A lot are insane men's pieces that he had custom made, but there are also a good amount of stunning women's pieces. We will be listing them slowly but surely. The first one pictured above is a Misty Harbor Limited Edition coat (The Coat of Qiana). The fabric is crazy gorgeous as is the heavily Asian inspired design. The second picture is the cutest pair of men's trousers, Arnold Craven label, embroidered with tiny tennis rackets and the word "love". Third is a stunning sage green Butte Knit cape coat (my personal favorite). The last coat is just a cutie pie find we ran across....slate blue princess cut coat with grey fur collar and an awesome set of buttons! Just click the poster above and visit our shop for a closer inspection of these amazing pieces. Hope everyone has a great week! -Adah

Taisho romance Kimono...East Does Meet West !

This amazing Silk Floral Flapper 20s Taisho Romance Art Deco Kimono has
beautiful bright colors of hot pink, golden chartreuse, cornflower blue and black in a floral and foliage design. It's in the Taisho Romance style. I'd had many kimonos pass through my hands, but this one is very special. It's a wonderful blend of American and European Art Deco Moderne influenced, and the traditional Japanese aesthetic...

In 1912 the Taisho period began when the Meiji emperor died and his Crown Prince Yoshihito took the throne. In 1914 Japan declared war on Germany, joining the Allies in World War I, and began its international forays, including military interventions in China. The post WW1 era brought Japan much prosperity. It was time of new ideas, liberalism and power. By the late 1930's the Depression and internal politics eventually drove Japan back towards a more traditional nationalistic lifestyle in politics and art. But for a time......beautiful Western-influenced art and crafts were produced.

from a website.....

When looking at Japan’s long history, it’s easy to consider the brief 14 years of the Taisho period (1912-26) as a mere footnote. The emperor, Yoshihito, did not play an active role due to a lifetime of ill health. Yet during his brief reign, he sat as figurehead of a country reeling between the onslaught of foreign influences during the Meiji period and the radical conservatism and patriotic fervor that grew before World War II. In fact, the Taisho period was a fascinating and pivotal time,
an amalgam of contradictory social forces of East and West that saw the Japanese question their self-identity. Much of this was poignantly reflected in the lifestyles, fashion and arts of the time.

Project Runway - College Girls enter the Real World

Down to 6. In case you didn't already hear, the last 6 designers all got to show their collections at Bryant Park last Friday during Fashion Week. That's because they still haven't figured out how to edit Project Runway without running several weeks after Fashion Week. I just think that it's unfair that auffed designers still get to show at Bryant Park, when that's part of the prize. But they get to show so that no spoilers are published revealing who the final 3/4 are before the show airs.
I guess that I didn't mind it in the past when people like Austin, Kara J, Chris March and Sweet P were able to show after being auffed. But they were all good designers. There's just something about Joe being able to show that really bugs me. I still can't figure out how he, and a few others, even got cast this year. Was there a poor turn-out at casting? Was there something fabulous in their audition/portfolio that we didn't get to see? I miss the Road to the Runway episodes where you got to see the casting.

Oh, well. The challenge this week was to create an outfit for recent college graduates who were getting makeovers so they could go out and rule the world with their college degrees and their new hairstyles. Plus their mothers were observing and giving their opinions. What college grad is going to listen to their mother's wardrobe suggestions? None. The mothers were just thrown in this mix for drama, but the drama was minimal and not enough to make this an interesting show.
Jerell was the winner, 2 wins in a row - yeah! Joe was out of course, yeah! Kenley is really, really starting to bug me, and I think I will rrrrreally start to dislike her next week if the previews are true. I didn't like the 'vintage dress' that she made - if the girl wanted a vintage look, she should have gone out a bought a vintage dress! (sorry, it's the vintage seller in me throwing a fit over people buying into getting a vintage look without an actual vintage garment) In next week's preview, you hear Kenley saying 'What does Tim know anyway?' huuuuuuuuuhhhhhhh? What? On no you . . . - I'll save this rant until the show actually airs and I hear her comment in context before I bitch.
I was watching some repeats of Season 4 on Monday night. Ahh, the good ole days of Season 4, where you looked forward to and were amazed by the designs of Chris M, Rami, Jillian and Christian and others. Remember the Wrestling Gals, the Art Museum? Seeing those episodes made me realize just how weak this season is. Bring back Stella! At least she was cool and interesting.

OK, now for my attempt at making this Project Runway post related to Vintage Clothing (better than Kenley did) I chose some vintage suits that aren't your typical button-down, serious working girl suits. Some that are very suitable for a professional job, but with a little fun or flash.

1. Boho Folkloric Vintage 70s Young Edwardian Suit - from Lucitebox

2. VINTAGE 50s 60s TWO-TONE PEPLUM WIGGLE DRESS AND JACKET XS - from Retro Glamour

3. VINTAGE CLASSY BLUE GOLD LINED DRESS JACKET SUIT ~ XS/S - from Pamper Me Tonight

4. Vintage 70s Denim Western Dress Suit Skirt Blazer - from meticulousmaltese

5. Cute Tan Two Piece Skirt Suit Vintage 70's w Tags S - from hotelregina

Bye for now, Carol
http://www.dandelionvintage.com/
I find myself drifting back to the 70's. I was in high school, life was ahead of me, anything was possible. I loved Elton John's album- yes, ALBUM, not CD, Honky Chateau, my Peter Max pants, and anything made of fringed leather.

Well, Honky Chateau just doesn't sound the same if it's not on vinyl, my Peter Max Pants are long gone (DAMN!!!!) and fringed leather isn't quite as rebellious as it was back then.

I've been enjoying this top recently, as it harks back to the psychedelic style of the time. It's got a bold, vibrant print that brings to mind the fluid, "if it feels good, do it" attitude of the late 60's - 70's.

The Mad Fashionista Does The Manhattan Vintage Show!

Hi, Everybody -

My virtual twin, The Mad Fashionista, had this to post yesterday on her blog, and rather than repeat the information, I thought I would let her tell you. (Don't mind her attitude, she's just that way.)

DAHLINGS –

Brace yourselves! There is exciting news today!

I AM RETURNING IN TRIUMPH TO THE MANHATTAN VINTAGE SHOW IN NEW YORK CITY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10 & 11!

Stupéfier, non? Yes, your faithful correspondent is happy to announce that she is once again working alongside MATINEE NEW YORK, the premiere source of men's and women's vintage clothing supplied to the film and theater industry, and owner of one of the largest collections of men’s vintage in the known universe. Of course, I only associate with the best people.

But you knew that. That’s why you are reading this on the Internet instead of lounging in my sitting room.

Be that as it may:

Racks and display tables shall be bulging with my mâchoire-chute beau PLUS-SIZE vintage, from the 1930s to the 1980s! Through hours of ceaseless toil (well, my assistant’s ceaseless toil, anyway) the finest of my collection has been chosen and readied for your delectation. And not only clothing, but jewelry and accessories!

Here is just a tiny taste of what is in store!

Going back into the past to the 1920s, feast your eyes on this pure silk jet-black flapper dress of charmeuse and velvet, with the original jet buttons, size XXXL!

This sophisticated 1950s plunge-neck black wool suit, with its perfect v-neck mink collar, XL!

And now that the 80s are again becoming popular, this probably Victor Costa green velvet and crepe pleated sleeve long gown! Size 18:

As for accessories, here are three compacts, including one by Limoges:

I shall continue these previews right up until the big day, dahlings! And I hope to see you there!

It's getting closer to my favorite time of year. I have always been in love with Fall. And since cooler weather is on the way, we have started listing some of my favorite kinds of pieces vintage coats, jackets and sweaters. Be Careful What You Wish For - The Sequel

Hi, everybody -

Well, last Sunday, September 7, we had one "last hurrah" sale at the apartment I have been cleaning out. Believe it or not, it was still packed with stuff, despite having repeated sales, give-aways, and donations to charity. It was so sad to see the wreckage everywhere from our hard work. The kitchen was still full of things:

Although most of the pots and pans had gone as a give-away from an ad I placed in freecyclenyc, as had the dozens of plants!

"Murray's room" , which had been absolutely impassable when we first when it, was so crowded that I could only back up enough to take pictures of one wall:

After moving mountains of junk, it looked like this:

The antique Singer sewing machine in the foreground fell apart in my hands when my husband and I moved it to the bare bedroom, but we managed to get the antique desk out of the corner. It was donated to charity, and I gave away the huge, beautiful drafting table and chair that had partly blocked the window. The huge bookcase in the back of the photo remains, as far as I know.

Despite giving away a total of 38 black garbage bags of clothing, by the time we had to surrender the keys to the landlord, there were still more than fifteen bags:

As well as clothing still in the closets:

One bright spot, on that last, awful, sad day, was the help of a young girl who lived on the floor below. She found it all fascinating, so as a present, I let her take this large sculpture, which she had fallen in love with:

The piano, a wrought iron table and chairs, and mountains of other things were left behind...there was simply too much to dispose of. I packed the personal photos and mementoes for the brother who hired me into huge bins, which my husband carried down to his car. There were two walkers, one of which I gave to an elderly neighbor who lives upstairs.

One thing had puzzled me, though. The surviving brother would demand, "Did you find the silver?" (Yes) "Did you find the black and white pearls?" (Reluctantly, yes) "Did you find the money??" Over and over he asked me that question, but I had no idea what he was talking about. Other than loose change, there was no money to be found.

Then yesterday, I was riding uptown on the bus with another elderly neighbor who used to know the deceased and her husband. "Oh, yes," he said, "I used to go there for drinks, and Murray would brag about how he had this big stash of money hidden in a secret place, because you never knew when you would need cash fast."

I stared at him. "Where were you three weeks ago?" I asked.

"You know these old Jewish people, they hide their money in the plants," he said, chuckling. "Our old super used to go for the plants as soon as the tenant died, and he always found it!"

"I gave away all of the plants," I said, feeling my stomach clench. "Somebody got a bonanza. I just hope they found it."

Later that afternoon, I realized that it didn't make any difference that the money had actually existed, and that I never found it. Whoever finds it will probably need it. And my apartment is filled with the most spectacular, high-end vintage I have ever owned. And I made some money myself by selling so much stuff out of the apartment (the brother and I agreed to a 50/50 split), and by getting an Ebay Trading Assistant.

But DAMN! Where was he three weeks ago!

Oh well, it's only money. Isn't it?

Best,
Elisa

September 11th A Sad Day

This is a sad day indeed. First, please take a moment to pay respect for the fallen people of this day. My Son came home from school today chatting about what he learned about September 11. This touched me as I had not spoken much about this because it happened when he was so small and I did not want too scare him. They are now observing and teaching about what really happened. Please bless all of those who have lost from this tragedy.

Joan Crawford Shoulders or 90's does 40's

I just got through listing a rather large batch of 1990's Vogue Patterns to my website and couldn't help but be reminded how the padded shoulders of the 90's were reminiscent of the padded shoulders of the 40's.

So I put together a little show of the ones I thought were the most Joan Crawford-ish.

Project Runway - Avant Garde Zodiacs

This week's Project Runway challenge was to create an Avant Garde look based on a Zodiac sign. The designers were randomly teamed up with the 'auf'-ed designers from this season, not many looked too thrilled to be coming back, and not many designers were too enthused about being teamed up with the 'losers'. Blayne and Stella seemed genuinely happy to be working together though. The teams had to choose one of their own Zodiac signs to create their look from.

I didn't like Keith much while he was on, and I didn't feel sorry for him when he cried during his departing speech, but I felt bad for him last night. He was teamed with Terri, who I had liked from the begining, but she really turned nasty. She totally dismissed Keith, didn't listen to his input, didn't let him do any sewing (he was there to help her) and she accused him of abandoning her during the runway critique. Keith requested that Terri 'Be Gentle' because he was kind of upset about being back, but she sure wasn't.

Anyway, I'm not sure some of the designers knew what Avant Garde meant (it doesn't mean weird or stupid, Blayne) And as usual, the show gave you such bad views of the outfits that you couldn't really tell what was going on.
Besides getting to see auf-ed designers from this season return, we got to see some designers from previous seasons when the current designers took their Avant Garde designs to a Planetarium to be judges by Jay (yeah!), Christian (still fierce), Kara J, Daniel V, Carmen, Allison Kelley (still adorable) and Robert (why him? thank goodness he cut the hair. The 90s are long-gone dude) Too bad it was so dark in the Planetarium that you couldn't see a thing of the garments.
Then they were off to the regular runway judging. I was happy to see Jerell win with his Sagittarius outfit. As I said previously I think he's the only guy with any somewhat consistant talent this season. I would like to have seen more of the fabulous details that everyone was talking about on his dress and I also would have liked to have seen the back of Korto's Aquarius gown, and more of Leanne's twisty Scorpio dress.

Joe worked with Daniel and it looked like he had a big influenec on the outfit. I don't know if Joe could have pulled it off alone, but then, he did win the Drag Queen challenge.
Kenley threw an Aquarius-ego fit trying to defend the bizarro cartoon costume that she created. Bad attitude girlie. She and Terri 'tutted' and made faces while the judges critiqued their outfits. I can understand being upset over being slammed for something that you think is fabulous, but suck it up and be professional. (I'd probably be tutting and face pulling too though!)

Blayne and Terri were out. Blayne deserved to go, but I was disappointed in Terri being out and in her sudden display of behavior. Mme. Kors made fun of Suede referring to himself in the third person, saying he didn't have the talent or fame to be doing that yet.

So my challenge was to find some Avant Garde-like vintage clothing for this post. I went to Etsy for my search, since 'avant garde' is becoming an overused and abused keyword on ebay (hoods and batwings do not neccessarily make something avant garde, ladies)
I choose some items that I felt could be considered Avant Garde, attention getting, unusual. Enjoy.

How to Catch a MAN!!! 1960 Style

Of course they didn't tell us what to do with him once he was caught...but that information really wasn't suitable for publication in 1960. Actually the article is entitled "How to be Popular" But the answer to that wasn't suitable for publication either so they just beat around the bush, and taught us girls to tease a lot.

Lots of pretty dresses with full or very slim skirts were designed to catch a man's eye............after all no self respecting woman was worth her salt, if she didn't have a man to take care of poor little ole her. So to get that perfect hour glass figure it was recommended that you
"dream" your way into the proper foundations.

LOL............this was written with my tongue in my cheek because I bought the whole package in 1960 and parts of me still does...........which could be why I'm still married after 36 years. Or I could just be lucky.

But if you want to read it for fun or to really see how the distaff side lived in the Mid Century this charming Ladies Home Journal is listed on ecrater at cemetarian.

Easy Shmeezy!

How easy is it to wear vintage clothing? Easy Shmeezy!

This is for those who read this blog and need some vintage fashion tips. Maybe you want to get into wearing vintage but don't quite know how to do it. Even us vintage sellers & collectors could use a new idea now and again. :-)

Ever liked a piece of vintage clothing but just couldn't figure out how to make it modern? Here are a couple of ideas for you.

A simple soft 1960s Candy Jrs. pink chiffon dress with an added chocolate brown moc-croc leather belt. Overall pleats may not be for everyone, but when a belt brings the eye towards the middle, the pleats suddenly become smaller - and so does the figure! The color of the belt is important too - always experiment, but we found the brown was a softer look. We tried black but it made the pink suddenly look like a little kids' pink dress instead of feminine & age appropriate.

A 1950s Kathi Original cotton evergreen swing dress is updated by simply adding modern jewellery. We know designers copy this dress style all the time - so why not use the original! With a cuff bracelet, a shoulder bag or clutch and some great shoes (I can see purple shoes actually), this is a simple but knockout look.

The Carrington Women do battle again!

It was a fight like no other in the history of the Carrington family. And all because of a mistake by Donna, a clerk at the the famed boutique, Wyogems Vintage . Although the sales clerk had been warned about the Carrington women and how competitive they were, Donna in her excitement forgot this important detail. Krystle Carrington, sweet as you please came in for her appointment and Donna showed her the new line of jumpsuits in a plethora of colors. Krystle decided on the

WILD EXOTIC ZEBRA PRINT RED BLACK JUMPSUIT BOLERO SET S

With her blonde hair and beautiful figure the jumpsuit would be a perfect foil for her glamour. Donna was over the moon for the jumpsuit was $1400 (two months salary for her) and her commission would be fabulous. She wrapped up the jumpsuit as quickly as she could for Krystle was in a hurry to get her blond tresses touched up.

As Krystle went out the front door, Alexis came in the back door trying to ditch the stalker she had picked up along with a bad case of crabs the month before. She sashayed into the room looking down her nose at Donna and stated, "What did that bitch just try on?" Flustered and downtrodden Donna spoke in a whisper, "The jumpsuit." Without even admitting she had heard poor Donna, Alexis grabbed the same jumpsuit (one size smaller) that Krystle had just tried on. "Hurry up you pasty-faced waste of a shop girl and wrap this up. I've got more important things to do!" Alexis slipped the jumpsuit on which fit like a second skin, ripped it off, tossed it to Donna and snarled, "I'll take it. Put it on my account and move it before I change my mind." Donna wrapped the jumpsuit up as quick as she could and Alexis sashayed back out the door jumpsuit in hand and into her waiting limo, leaving her stalker aimlessly wandering up and down the street looking for her.

It was a long day for Donna and finally around 9 o'clock she was able to close up the shop and limp home. While she was soaking her feet she suddenly recalled her boss' instructions to never ever let the Carrington women buy the same item or all hell would break lose. Donna wept into her foot bath as she tried to figure out where she could find a new job as her mistake would surely cost her her current one.

Meanwhile at the Denver Art Museum Krystle and Blake Carrington had already arrived and were sipping champagne cocktails while discussing the pros and cons of abstract expressionist Clyfford Still's paintings.

With her back towards the doorway Krystle never saw Alexis sashay in and start holding court in the same room just a few feet away. Blake frowned and Krystle knew that meant only one thing. She slowly turned around just as Alexis clenched her fist and swung as hard as she could. Krystle's drink went flying from her hand and landed all over the latest abstract painting by Clyfford Still. A hush fell over the room as Alexis screamed "What the hell are you doing with my jumpsuit on?" and then draped herself over Blake's arm and purred, "Why do you waste your time with her Blake, when you could have a real woman?" Alexis never saw Krystle grab the painting and swing it overhead and barely felt the impact on her head as the painting pinioned her arms at her side.

Blake snapped his fingers and two bodyguards appeared out of thin air to pick up the now pinned Alexis and Blake said, "Take out the trash gentlemen." A stream of blue air trailed behind Alexis as she shouted, "It's not over! It will never be over you bitch!"Now you can own the only gorgeous

Interesting purchase - Lofties by Lawrence set with some extras

I made a small purchase of vintage clothing at a local barn sale this weekend, and this was one of the items that I bought. It's a pretty, light blue knit sweater and skirt set from 'Lofties by Lawrence' - I love these sweater sets and I've had a few made by Lofties. This one was a cool find because it was still in the original Lofties box, along with the paper hang tag and an envelope with 3 extra buttons still inside of the box too.

But wait, it gets cooler - also in the box, which I found very interesting, was an envelope, a postcard and invoice from the Joseph Berg Co. - The Berg Co, located in Cleveland OH, specialized in shortening knitwear.

From the postcard - 'Attention Knitted Sportswear Buyer, We specialize in shortening one and two piece Knit Dresses to the exact length required by our customer. Our method of shortening is to take the excess off from the bottom of the skirt and finish it by hand. The charge is $3.50 per skirt. We also specialize in shortening blouses and sleeves, mending, repairs etc. Prices will be furnished upon request. 2-3 days service is guaranteed after receipt of garment . . . '

So Mrs. K from Millville NJ sent her skirt to Ohio to be shortened by the Berg Co., and the fee on the invoice was $3.50 and it is dated 4/5/55. I thought it was very interesting to have the paperwork with the set still. The piece that they cut from the bottom of the skirt is still in the box too. The bottom of the skirt is very neatly finished. I can only guess that she never wore it.

I'm going to keep the set for a while, think about how cool it is, and then maybe sell it later on. But once I saw how cute it was on my mannequin, I'm tempted to keep it for myself (it will depend on how the knit skirt stretches across my behind!)

Bye for now, Carol

My latest favorite thing ever

I freaked when I saw it was a vintage athletic jacket.

I freaked when I saw it was a vintage athletic BOWLING jacket, with pin and bowling ball shaped patchs.

I freaked when I saw that the patches were embroidered with the years the team won (making it easy to date) and that the winning team was Checker Cab (a bunch of cabbies winning bowling tournament in the late 50's is an incredibly evocative situation).

And then while driving it home, my associate pointed out that it was completely reversible, with a black satin, and matching bowling theme patches. These types of things should not be pointed out to me when I'm driving, because I damn near crashed the car.

This is especially timely because I have been obsessed with Rin Tanaka's work - books on vintage motorcycle culture, vintage skateboard and surf fashion, rockabilly fashion, and vintage athletic fashion.

Rudi Gernreich - A Designer Before His Time

Rudi Gernreich was a pioneer before his time in sportswear and swimwear. Gernreich made his name with swimsuits, soon followed by belted shift dresses and simple knit styles.

Gernreich was born in Austria on August 8, 1922. He and his mother fled Hitler's growing power by emigrating to the United States following the Anschluss of 1938. After studying art and a brief stint as a professional dancer, Gernreich began working in the fashion industry in the 1950s. During the 1950s Gernreich made his mark in the fashion world by designing the first unstructured women's swimsuit, a form-fitting one-piece with no wire or other supports.

Influenced by Bauhaus functionalism, Gernreich conceived a body-based dressing with coordinated underwear, celebrating the unrestrained movement of the body based on his early involvement with Lester Horton's modern dance troupe. This interest in liberating the body from the limitations of clothing surfaced in his early swimwear designs of 1952 in which he eliminated the complicated boned and underpinned interior construction that had been obligatory in the 1950s. He revived the knitted swimsuit or "maillot" of the 1920s, which he elasticized to follow the shape of the body. These experiments were continued in his knitted tube dresses of 1953.

While he achieved modest success, it was not until the swinging 1960s that his natural avant-garde tendencies were able to surface. In the early 1960s Gernreich opened a Seventh Avenue showroom in New York where he showed his popular designs for Harmon knitwear and his own more expensive line of experimental garments. During the decade he acquired a reputation for being the most radical designer in America; his designs included the jacket with one notched and one rounded lapel, tuxedos made of white satin, and the topless monokini bathing suit of 1964, which reflected the new vogue for topless sunbathing. Gernreich cropped the swimsuit just above the waist and supported it with a V-shaped pair of thin, over-the-shoulder straps, thus exposing the breasts on either side.

Gernreich was also responsible for developing the concept of unisex, believing that as women achieved more freedom in the 1960s, male dress would emerge from the aesthetic exile into which it had been cast in the 19th century. He conceived interchangeable clothes for men and women. He also invented the thong bathing suit.

Gernreich was interested less in the details and decorations of clothes and more in how they looked in motion. In the 1950s he was designing relaxed, comfortable clothes fabricated out of wool, jersey, and other malleable materials, usually in solid colors or geometric shapes and checks. During the next decade he went on to use unusual fabrics and bold color disharmonies such as orange and blue or red and purple. It is worth noting that Rudi Gernreich persisted in using wool throughout his career. His ability to mix old and new, lighthearted and classical distinguishes all his designs.

Gernreich designed swimsuits without interior foundations for Bass from 1952-1959, and swimwear for Westwood Knitting Mills from 1955-1960. Harmon Knitwear, Inc. in Marinette, Wis. made most of Gernreich's swim-suits and all of his knitted dresses in the 60's.

Rudi Gernreich for Westwood Swimsuit

Glamoursurf has recently acquired a mid 50's Rudi Gernreich for Westwood coral pink one piece button front wool swimsuit. It is shown here as well as above on the cover of Colliers Magazine dated June 8, 1956. You can also see this suit here in a retrospective exhibition which was held in 2001 at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.

eBay: My neverending affair

After selling on eBay for quite some time, I decided to close my eBay store a few weeks ago. I have my own website and besides, who needs eBay anyway? I've used the past few weeks to focus more on my handcrafted things, which has actually been a nice break and a lot of fun.

Earlier this week, after looking around my room full of vintage, I decided to reopen my eBay store. It's been less than 30 days and I did not lose any stored information. My unsold listings were still intact.

I've decided to start auctioning off some of my inventory items that I've had a long time. Today, I listed some new things that have never been listed before, like this great vintage 50s green peplum dress:

Photobucket

and this great vintage 40s nipped waist gabardine suit:

Photobucket

as well as this cute little embroidered 50s dress:

Stop by and say hi! I'm also offering a 20% discount on any items on my own site at Lone Star Vintage Clothing Photobucket. Mention "20%OFF" at checkout and I'll revise your invoice.

As summer fades.....

I hate to think of summer slipping away.... I love when it's light out when I get up at 5 a.m. and STILL light out at 8:30 p.m.! Having my coffee on the patio, the smell of freshly mown grass, and sweet, tiny grape tomatoes nibbled warm from the garden - these delights make it so hard to pull out the sweaters and coats. But, fortunately, I have these gorgeous wraps to stave off the fast approaching chill in the morning air~ Maybe autumn isn't quite so bad after all!

Project Runway - A Foreign Affair

This week's challenge took the designers to the office of Diane Von Furstenberg, where she made a dramatic entrance down a long set of white steps, and shook hands with what seemed like 30 or so people instead of the few designers that were actually there. She looks great, how old is she? Diane presented the challenge, which was to create an outfit that could go along with her 2008 Collection - 'Foreign Affair'. Her collection was inspired by the Marlene Dietrich film, which is set in Berlin, Shanghai and New York. The winning outfit would be offered for sale exclusively to American Express customers.

Probably the most exciting thing to happen so far this season, for me anyway, was that the designers got to go through Diane's fabric room and choose some of her fabrics to make their outfits! I loved that because I love fabrics, I love looking at them, touching them, drooling on them. Plus Diane Von F is so well known for her beautiful prints and drapey fabrics. Yummy. Fabric lust.

Anyway, someone please slap Blayne upside the head for whatever that thing was he had tied around his head, and for thinking that Diane was 'googling' him and his tan, and for thinking the Olsen twins are a 'fashion legend' Why is here still here?! Sadly Stella Leathuh was the one out. I know she had to go at some time, because this wasn't really her scene. She also didn't seem to be enjoying herself much anymore. But I liked Stella, she was fun. I loved her comment about the 'stylist in the oversized mu-mu'. Joe and Blayne could have gone before her. I liked the idea/look of her vest and pants, although the pants had 'the crotch that women have nightmares about' according to Mme. Kors. It just wasn't made very well, and the cape was wrong.

Leanimal won again this week with a super beautiful 1930s inspired bias cut gown. It had a surprise ruffle down the back. I didn't care much for the coat in the fabric that she used, it seemed kind of too casual. But you can see the dress for sale at $650.00 - with much better pictures than the crappy ones from Project Runway's site. Korto was in 2nd place with a super black and white gown with a splash of yellow. Her jacket doesn't look very good in the photo above, but it was really sharp on the runway. These two are my picks for being in the final 3!

My challenge this week, first I was going to find some Diane Von F dresses currently for sale, but I decided to find something vintage that could represent each city in the movie. Check out these choices and their sellers' listings.

A Vote for Maggie is a Vote for Vintage!

If you've ever shopped for vintage on eBay, you've surely come across the lovely auctions of Maggie at denisebrain.  Maggie was one of the very first sellers to use a live model - herself - and she continues to be the very best at it.

She recently entered a contest sponsored by More magazine - Re-defining the F-word.  Maggie's F-word is Finery:

I was right when I was 6... Playing dress up makes you happy! Now 47, I've made a second career of vintage clothing and I never tire of the finery!

But Maggie needs our help.  She is one of the 25 finalists in the contest, and now they are doing an elimination round.  The top five vote-getters will be considered for the prize of $1000.  She is currently in 6th place, but it is really close and could use your vote - votes actually, as you can vote every day from now through September 15.  So visit the site, and show your support for a true vintage fashionista!
