I Can't Let Go of Summer...Not Yet!

I can't do it. I just can't. That is...letting go of summer. The Labor Day weekend is here in Canada which means the official end of summer vacation, kids back to school and fall fashions in the air.

We had such a rainy, cool summer that I refuse to let summer leave without taking in every moment of sunshine available. This weekend happens to be perfect weather.

As soon as the weather turns cold, I will be thinking of my next holiday. Spain was wonderful this year, and my niece wants me to take her to Hawaii next year. How can I refuse such a reasonable request! :-)

So to celebrate our trip to Hawaii, here is a gorgeous cotton maxi dress by Ui-Maikai. White cotton with stunning pink hibiscus flowers and an attached train at the back. When I found this dress, I just loved how perfect the flowers were and could easily see myself wearing it in Hawaii. Then.....

a month later found a matching gent's shirt! Lightening really can strike twice in the same place!

Designer Spotlight - Emauel Ungaro

Photobucket Born to Italian parents who had fled to France from Francavilla Fontana,Brindisi because of the fascist Italian government. As a young boy, Emanuel Ungaro took to sewing like his father, Cosimo.

At the age of 22, he moved to Paris and three years later, he began designing for the House of Cristobal Balenciaga for three years before quitting to work for Courrèges. Four years later, in 1965 with the assistance of Swiss artist Sonja Knapp, Emanuel Ungaro opened his own fashion house in Paris.

In 1968, he created his first pret-a-porter collection, Parallèle and opened a boutique at 2, avenue Montaigne in Paris. During the next 30 years, the Emanuel Ungaro House expanded to include boutiques and licensing agreements worldwide.

This week, we are so very proud to able to offer 3 of his vintage dresses in our store! All 3 are exquisite examples of 80s style, Parisian quality, and Italian design!

Our first is this STUNNING Silk Asian Avant-Garde Ruched Mini Dress:
Photobucket

Next is this EXQUISITE Silk Cummerbund Waist Yellow Floral Mini Dress:

Evolution of Women's Career Suits

With more women entering the work force during World War II, the clerical jobs formerly occupied by men were filled with women. Trying to maintain some status and not look frivolous in the serious world of commerce and industry, women adopted a Masculine Look with Wide padded shoulders and complete covering from neck to below the knee. But you will notice that they did manage to keep a semblance of femininity with a very fitted waistline and peplum jackets that emphasized their hips.

This lovely Gabardine suit, found on Babylon Mall, is completely dart fitted in front and back and the peplum jacket flares nicely over a pencil slim skirt.

After Johnny Came Marching Home, women we reluctant to give up their new found status in the professional world and some managed to keep their jobs and opened new employment opportunities for young women who wanted a career instead of a life of domestic bliss (notice that both was seldom an option at this time.)

The 50's ushered in a similar but softening look in career wear. These three suits have a less structured feel although in the first shoulder pads are still prominent but smaller. The waist is softened with velvet trim on the jacket and a velvet pocket. The Pumpkin Spice flecked suit is boxy over a still slim skirt. But the fabric flows and shows all those feminine curves within the box. And the 3rd in this series is Femininity Personified. Fitted waist, small peplum that is enhanced with ruched trim and a full flared skirt and don't forget the lower V neckline.

The 60's brought us a very new look with the influence of Jackie Kennedy. Her taste and particular figure requirements brought us the A line skirt and short boxy yet softer jackets. Less emphasis on the waistline and more emphasis on the Total LOOK!

These three beauties are all distinctly tailored for that Classic Chic Jackie Style.

The first is a pink brocade with glittery buttons. The 2nd is a blue shantung with heavily beaded collar and the last is a heavy slubbed silk in pink with cranberry trim and a ruffled cranberry collar.

Just prior to the British Invasion and the MOD era, swingy pleated skirts and lowered waistlines were not only casual and comfy but practical and just plain fun to wear. This fab suit from Donavan Galvani is a cranberry and wine combo. The skirt is pleated and the jacket is semi fitted in the waist with a belt. Shawl collar and ribbed sleeves finish off the look.

Project Runway - Cars

This week's challenge started on the roof of a parking garage with several cars, provided by advertiser Saturn of course. The cars were filled with materials that were used to make the cars, and the designers had to grab whatever they could out of the cars, and fill their little flea market carts (Those carts used to drive me crazy at the flea markets, shoppers use them as weapons and bulldozers to try to beat you to the good stuff, and it's impossible to get around them in a crowd) At first, I wasn't expecting much from this challenge because the materials were all tan and black with some shiny pieces here and there. But the resulting designs were actually quite good. Most of them anyway.
Leanne won this challenge with a dress sculpted from vinyl. Korto was in 2nd place with a jacket made from woven seatbelts, and Jerell was 3rd in a futuristic outfit made from vinyl and plastic silver trims - I didn't care for the model's make-up and hair though, it kind of took away from the outfit. Jerell is the only man who seems to occasionally do interesting designs this season. So far none of the men have really stood out or been consistant in their designs. My prediction is that the final 3/4 will be all gals. Korto has GOT to be in the finals because she usually provides a very good design.
Keith from the Utah Hood was out, finally. Did you feel sorry for all the mean things that you said about him after he cried at the end? No, neither did I. Next on my hit list - Blayne.

Of course I'm not going to be able to find any vintage clothing made from car materials to go with this week's post, so I took the easy route and found some cool items with car prints.

1. Vintage 70s Slinky Disco Novelty Antique Car Shirt - from Retrochic Vintage for $14.00.
2. Racing Print Paganne dress - from Dorothea's Vintage Closet.
3. 1950's~COTTON~Japanamai~BLOUSE~Made In JAPAN~CARS~Print - from Eclectic Collage.
4. Vintage Purse-Wooden Purse-Man, Woman, Car and Beads! from thetreasuredpast.
5. VINTAGE INDIANAPOLIS 500 CAR RACE 27" SPEED SCARF - from bogeyboy

The Thrill of The Hunt...Now What?

Hi, everybody -

I almost feel like I should apologize for not advertising my wares here, but these days I've been far too busy to list anything. The apartment cleanout is almost done. The deceased was not only a hoarder, she hid her best things way in the backs of closets wrapped in paper bags. When I'm at home, I'm constantly doing hand laundry, but the results are worth it!

This kind of work immerses you in another family's history and traditions. There was a pre-World War One Singer Sewing Machine used as a computer table in the husband's combination ham radio station/office/workshop. Photographs dating back to before the turn of the century, when the family lived in Vienna. Many, many objects pertaining to Jewish traditions and rituals. And one of the coolest vintage bars I've ever seen in the entryway:

A group of college guys bought the bar, of course.

Among the clothes I came across, there was this beautiful mink ski jacket, lined in quilted blue:

This fox-collared jacket:

And so much more! I'm going to take the Labor Day weekend off, float in the ocean, and luxuriate in time spent with my husband and my dog, Bucky.

Best,
Elisa

Just 25 Seconds...That's all it Takes to Be Lovely!

Swirl--they're a favorite manufacturer of so many vintage lovers. It's no wonder that we like them. They're cute, easy to wear, flattering and loaded with the kinds of details that people who appreciate vintage dresses tend to adore.

Are you familiar with the label? You probably are. If you're not, there's a fabulous primer written by fuzzylizzie that you might want to read.

I'm keeping this fun dress and I have to admit that I'm excited about that. After all, it's got a fauxverskirt. (Sort of.) Wouldn't you know, I was just musing that I wanted a red dress? Surely this one isn't a Joan dress, but it fits me and it's pristine. It came to me with its original hang tag. When I got it, I had no intention of keeping it, but how can I let it go? Nevertheless, I feel like its new old stock status is a mixed blessing. A new dress is like a perfect apple just waiting for me to bruise it. I hope I can keep it neat and tidy and free of damage.

Check out the hang tags. There's something incredibly wonderful about the idea that in just 25 seconds, I'll be wonderful in this Swirl!

If you're mad at me for keeping this, don't worry, there's plenty of cute on lucitebox.com that ought to make you look lovely in just 25 seconds. I just put up a few sunny Summer dresses. (Yeah, I know--Summer dresses just in time for Fall--not too bright, right? But, for pity's sake, we've still got 85 degree days and humidity here in the Midwest!)

Here are just few delights added to the site recently. All of the images are clickable.

Guess what? To celebrate my new Swirl dress, I'm offering you 15% off of your next order on lucitebox.com. All you need to do is use our coupon code--25secondswirl. Hurry! This offer expires on August 29th. That's right, you have just a few days to save on every lovely thing on lucitebox. Just 25 seconds...that's all it takes to be lovely.

Will Selling On Ebay Be Worth It?

Hi, everyone -

First of all, let me say how much I love the fabulous vintage I see on this site! Every time I log on, I get free eye candy!

Second, I hope this entry does not offend everyone. I'm very tired from what I have been doing (see my entry from Sunday), the apartment clean out, which is coming to a close, at least for me.

But I feel so dispirited about the changes coming to Ebay, from the huge hike in final value fees (effectively making the Vintage Blow Out Sale obsolete after Labor Day), and worst of all, the Paypal and electronic payment only option to start in October. As a vintage seller, most of my buyers are not high-end folks, and many of them prefer to pay with money orders. An Ebay trading assistant I'm working with also accepts personal checks. Not only will our businesses be affected, but so will our customers! Not everyone has a credit card, or a Paypal account.

I would welcome comments from other sellers, be they on Ebay, Etsy, Specialist Auctions, or those with their own websites. What is your preferred selling venue?

This is obviously not something that can be discussed on Ebay, so I am tossing it out here. I'm not a Powerseller, just a woman who loves vintage and loves giving it new life by passing it on to others. Please don't make hateful comments, because I am not disparaging Ebay, just wondering how I'll cope.

Best,
Elisa

I have a Vintage Addiction

I have been buying and wearing vintage clothes for many years now. The clothes started pilling up in my closet so much that my husband said turn your addiction into a business. Well that is what I did. I had a brick and mortar boutique which was great, but I guess wrong timing, so I closed it and now I am doing in home trunk shows and selling online. It is a great feeling when I search for vintage clothing, because guess what? You will not look like everyone else! That is the beauty recreating the old to the new! Here is one dress that I just love! My Jackie O Dress

60's Status Silk

Vintage Status A-line floor length silk organza hostess/cocktail dress. Caftan style. Large abstract white on black poppy motif. Fully lined with an elegant trailing half cape attached at the back shoulders and neckline. Think Endora on "Bewitched" or Talitha Getty. Rare find in pristine condition.
Size: Medium, Measures 36" at the bust, 32" at the waist, and 38" at hips.

The Correct Foundation Garments for 1950s Dresses

If you've ever purchased a vintage dress and wondered why it doesn't fit correctly, maybe you're not wearing the proper foundation garments. Prior to the late 1960's, clothing was styled and cut with the understanding that women would be wearing girdles and shapers underneath.

This week on the Couture Allure Blog, I've been doing a series with photos from a 1958 fashion magazine about the correct foundation garments to wear with different styles that were popular at the time. Check it out!

Chi-Chi and the Greek...an intro!

Well here we are, our first post! It's been exciting for us to finally open our online store: Chi-Chi and the Greek. My husband/partner, aka The Greek!, have been collecting vintage clothing for over 10 years. We travel the United States, Europe and Asia and are always on the look out for sublime vintage finds. While the "hunt" is ever so exciting I find more pleasure in meeting the people who actually wore the clothes. For me it's the history, the family secrets, the making of a new friend, if only for a few minutes. In fact if you looked at my collection it would make you swoon, so many different eras, finds...but my personal collection would have you laughing! I tend to keep the tattered and torn pieces, they are the finds that bring me closer to the actual history. For me vintage clothing is about perserving the past and celebrating it too! Vintage isn't just a business it's a passion, an addiction for me.
Enough babble, let's see what's cooking at our store!
First a spectacular Diane Freis dress in a cotton fbric that is heavy and substantial. Quite different from her georgette and silk dresses. Tag read only "Diane Freis"

Next a rich and sexy faux Leopard print coat! Gorgeous!

Finally this spectacular Mac Tac for Leonard Sunshine, 100% nylon fabric imported from France

Also we love to do business with other dealers, we offer a nice discount for you, so if anything catches your eye, email me at" chichi@chichiandthegreek.com

Color Me Yellow

I envy those whose job it is to name colors for the fashion industry or paint color companies. What creative fun it is to find synonyms for the basic colors and all their shades. The possibilities are endless! Take these two recently acquired 1950s yellow dresses. They are the exact same yellow color and in my minds eye, they are a lovely relaxing hue. To others it could mean something quite different!

In fashion or home decor, the goal of naming a color is to match an emotion. The two dresses could be considered "calming yellow" to evoke a lazy summer afternoon. Or the same color could be "swinging yellow" to evoke excitement and energy. What color are these dresses to you? Leave a comment and share your creative ideas!

A Touch Of Mink

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket

Sometimes, while perusing thrift stores, flea markets, junk shops and estate sales, I will spot, at a distance, something out of the corner of my eye, that makes my heart skip a beat, and my mouth go dry, and my hands start to tingle from lack of oxygen.

I rush over, shove items out of the way, at which point, that odor, that oh so wonderful odor, that vintage items have, will hit my nostrils, and I will start to squeal.

And then it happens. Subtle, yet will never forget, I will realise I have found something TRULY stunning, that surpasses all the HUNDREDS of mid 60s to 80s trendy stuff I find, and I am grateful to have found something so classic, and historical, and effulgent.

And today ladies, I am proud to offer to you, my find of the year:

This is a mid to late 40s (more late 40s) 2 piece skirt and jacket suit set by Bettiejean Furred Fashion. It is made from a high quality sable brown wool (or wool blend) tweed with black flecks. It features dolman set bracelet length sleeves, black plastic buttons highlighted with brown paint and tweed centers decorate the front with a matching bow tie at collar, curved hem, lots of seams and darts to give it definition, belted back, nipped waist, and a pure MINK collar! The skirt is a simple below the knee length style with a full metal side zipper and two hook and eye closures.

The jacket is fully lined in a burnt sienna material, the skirt is lined in same but only in back of skirt. They are both in immaculate condition, with only one tiny moth hole on right rear shoulder, they are pristine, with only slight storage odor.

And for you buxom glamour girls, aren't you lucky? This can accommodate larger sizes, which is RARE in vintage! 42-34-42!!!! I am that size, but I realized upon trying it on, that in order to be comfortable and for it to curve your body appropriately, then you will need to wear proper foundation garments under it.

So please be sure to check this beauty out before it is too late, because a vintage item of this quality, condition, style, and size will NOT last long at this price! So don't miss out, because it is one of a kind!

We also have a 1950s/1960s era Champagne Satin Swing Opera Coat XL and a 1950s/1960s Black Bobbi Brooks Pleated Rockabilly Dress XL.

Hello...We are The Family Vintage

CLICK UP THERE TO SHOP OUR STORE
This is our first post here, so I suppose introductions are in order. Hello...We are The Family Vintage, and we have a lil' vintage clothing shop on Ebay. We have what we consider an eclectic mix of authentic vintage pieces, and new listings are added weekly. New sets are listed every Thursday and auctions run for 10 days. We also offer a few buy it now pieces. We ship Worldwide and we love to combine shipping!
This is a family run business. My husband and myself handle everything from rescuing clothing to photography, shipping, listing....you get the point. This venture came about after our first daughter was born. We really had a desire to stay home with our kids. We now have two amazing daughters. One is 4 and the youngest is 2 soon to be 3! It's a challenge, but definitely worth it.
We love to treasure hunt for clothing and have been thrifting since we could drive ourselves about. My husband's vintage lovin' roots spring from his punk rock garage band days. My own come from a love of 60's and 70's rocker chic filtered through the 90's grunge scene. Plus I've always had a love of the fashion in classic, iconic films and television shows.....thanks to my Grandma Dot and her belief that children watch what the grown-ups want to watch and not the other way around.
We pride ourselves on our customer service, so if you ever have a question about an item please don't hesitate to email. Enough blah, blah, blah...here is a small sample of what's available in our shop now. Thanks for looking: )

Be Careful What You Wish For!

Hi, everybody -

This is sort of a cautionary tale with a happy ending. Some years ago, an elderly widow gave me some wonderful things: Dior evening bags, mink hats, etc. "What do I need with them?" she said dismissively when I asked her if she was serious. Then her late husband's pension was cut, and she "decided" that we had a consignment deal! The worst moment was when she screamed at me across our (large) building lobby, "WHERE'S MY MONEY?". So, I wrote her out a check, gave her back the rest of her things, and learned never to enter into a deal with anyone without a signed agreement!

Flash forward to the present: looooong story short, she passed away a few weeks ago. Through a series of coincidences (and a little pushiness on my part), I was handed the task of cleaning out the apartment by the overwhelmed family. I didn't ask for a fee...instead, I asked for her clothes and accessories, and 50% of anything I sold myself when an antique dealer or some such came up. Her brother signed the contract, and I found myself in a beautiful mid-century apartment.

Where two HOARDERS had lived for fifty years!

This is the very tip of the iceberg. There were six huge closets, each stuffed to the bursting point. I realized just why the family had felt so overwhelmed by the task! After the first day, my body ached so much I knew I needed help. So I hired a local guy who often does cleanouts, and has a much higher tolerance than me for yuuuccch.

Then there was "Murray's room." It was only after me and my helper had spent an exhausting eight hours cleaning some of it that I learned it hadn't been touched in THIRTY FIVE YEARS!

These photos are of only one wall. There was a solid wall of junk between the door and the window, so we devoted our efforts to clearing it out. My helper dove into the more disgusting parts (no details here, sorry), and we made it all the way to the window, which, according to the man's niece, had not been opened in forty years!

I made arrangements for the Salvation Army to come later this week and pick up what I thought would be about 22 contractor bags of clothing and linens (this is not counting Murray's clothes, which I have not touched). We've gone way past that already! The woman must have had 3,000 turtlenecks, many New With Tags. Her vintage clothing was in the barricaded closet in Murray's room, and what I found there was very worthwhile. It was a cedar closet, and she had kept her things in garment bags! For instance, here is a beautiful heavy silk made to order wiggle dress, along with its matching coat:

Not to mention designer purses, vintage bathing suits (a vintage bikini!), fur coats...one of the best hauls I've ever landed.

And all I've had to do for it is work for nine to ten hours a day, every day, cleaning out closets, sorting through objects, bagging garbage--you get the idea. I've seen my husband and my dog for about ten minutes a day before I shower and collapse into bed.

I wanted her things for years, and I got them. Along with an aching body and a deep desire never to see another cutesie figurine of a schnauzer or a ski-ing elf again.

Thank God for aspirin, coffee and those Thermacare wraps you can put on your lower back. I have no idea when I'll actually get to list the stuff. Maybe by next year.

I'm Mad about Mad Men

I am so delighted to see a program that celebrates this often over looked era because I LOVE the early 60's Fashions. That's probably because I became really fashion conscious in 1960 when I entered Junior High School.

This beauty is something I would have worn to a 8th grade dance in 1961. As a matter of fact I wore something almost identical. It has a taffeta under dress and floral organdy overdress with those really special puffy sleeves and of course we still worn BIG petticoats that year. Pink kitten heel shoes helped me dance the night away with that Special boy I met that night. It's not listed anywhere yet but will be next week on cemetarian on eBay.

While I was strutting my stuff in the floral beauty above, my lovely Hazel eyed Mom would be wearing this gorgeous cocktail dress of steely blue taffeta, (just the color of my Daddy's eyes) covered with lace and a crepe wiggle skirt below. Matching Peau de Soie spike heels pumps would have set it off perfectly.

Since my Mom was a bit more conservative than her best friend, Brownie, this gorgeous Gold and yellow confection would have been Brownie's choice for the party. With her lovely brunette hair and tawny brown eyes she would have been the hit of the party. But then she usually was the hit of the party, no matter what she wore.

And then there was the Subtle but Sexy Billie. Billie always knew how to dress just right. Sheer organdy over a full taffeta slip. Wide neck but not too daring. No fat petticoats for the understated Blonde. She would have every head turning to watch her pass in this Gay Gibson.

Project Runway Challenge - From Day to Evening

This week's Project Runway challenge was to design an outfit for Brook Shields to wear on her show 'Lipstick Jungle'. I've never seen the show, didn't even know Brook Shields was back on tv!
Anyway, Brook said her charactor is a professional woman with a 'bohemian' side, who needs clothing that can go from the office to a night out on the town. Keith won with the chiffon petal-skirted dress to the left here.

I had a hard time finding vintage that would suit this challenge, so I had to call on the help of some vintage friends to show me what they had that would fit the challenge.

"Desperately Seeking Susan" Rhinestone Boots

You remember them - the rhinestone studded boots Madonna wears in the 1985 film "Desperately Seeking Susan". Susan strolls past the window of Love Saves the Day, a real store still open today on 2nd Avenue in New York's East Village, and spys those boots that she has to have. She trades her leather pyramid jacket for the boots and wears them rolled down.

Bakers - Leeds shoe stores owned the license to copy the rhinestone boots designed by the film's Costume Design Assistant, Alison Lances. These boots were a holy grail for Madonna wannabes in the 80's.

Madonna's fashions for this film were named one of the Top 10 Film Fashion Moments by MSN's Entertainment site. And why not? Madonna wore her own style for this film, from men's pants with black lacy bras to piles of beads, crosses, and bracelets. The black sunglasses, the scarf in the hair, and those antique earrings that play a role in the story - she made it all seem so cool.

Up for auction this week on EBay, Couture Allure has two pair of the Madonna boots, one in black and one in red. They're not the Baker's licensed boots as they're made from vinyl, not leather, and they are decorated with sequins, not rhinestones, but they are a knock-off copy of the boots from the movie, and still uber cool. And they're new, old stock, and never worn! If you were a Madonna wannabe and always wanted a pair of these boots, you can still have them!

Project Runway - Olympic Challenge

This week's Project Runway challenge was to create a look for the 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremonies. There were some odd entires, and some cute entries that really weren't Olympic-like. Korto won with white wide legged pants and a leather vest seen here on the left. I liked it as an outfit, but I thought it was kind of boring and not something that would stand out much to represent the USA, and I can't imagine muscular gals in pants cut like those.

Below - #1- Kelli had a vintage-y looking blouse and skirt that was super cute, but not Olympic-like. I liked Terri's sporty outfit (#2) the best for this competition. #3- Daniel did a dress that he described as '1940s-like' Huh? What? The dress was pretty bad and Daniel just squeaked through this week.

So I tried to find some sporty yet chic vintage that could go along with this week's challenge -

Ever Wonder About Upside Down Labels?

Did you ever see a label sewn into the back neckline of a vintage garment upside down? Did you think it was a mistake? Did you think, "Wow, how did that slip by quality control?" Or maybe you thought, "Granny was messing around in her sewing box again." In truth, those labels are sewn in upside down for a reason. You usually see it on the highest quality garments, like this 1940's coat available at coutureallure.com.

The Jordan Marsh label is sewn in upside down at the back of the neck. Jordan Marsh was one of the fine old department stores here in Boston. This coat probably came from one of their boutique shops. But why did they sew the label in upside down?

Look what happens when the coat's owner takes it off and throws it over the back of her chair! The Jordan Marsh label is now right side up, so everyone in the room knows where madame bought this coat and that she paid a pretty penny for it. Just a little friendly competition among girlfriends! And some not so subtle advertising for the store.

Dreamy Wedding Bliss

For years I've used my past drama students as models for eBay. So when my very earliest models(sisters) made it back home for Alayna's wedding, I took full advantage. I dream about vintage clothing. I dream about how my pictures should look. And I saw this..........

Alayna is on the end in the cream and rhinestone 70's gown. Her sister Lisa is kneeling. You know Kelsey on the end in the sheath, and Sheila. You may also recognize Lila sitting. (Sheila's lil girl).

Missing in action is Seleena, who is very pregnant and Sarah, who is off charming Grand Forks.

Lovely Lisa has not lost her bliss. It's been years since she stood before me and the camera.

Alayna gets married this Saturday.

hugs and love from panda~

Fauxverskirt: Cousin to the Fauxlero

I have been intending to post here for ages. You know what the road to hades is paved with, right? Anyway, I put this on my blog and I feel so hot and dumpy today that I thought I'd post it here because I'm actually pretty proud of myself for my ability to make up a new word. Enjoy and stay cool...

You probably read about the fauxlero on A Dress a Day. It's a brilliant yet simple design detail that we see fairly frequently on vintage dresses. What's not to love about a little jacket that simulates a bolero but doesn't come off of the dress? Real boleros are so 1954, after all. Wait, fauxleros are also around at that time, too.

I'm coining a new word that's related to the fauxlero. I think it would be a major coup if I could find a dress that has not just a fauxlero, but also a fauxverskirt

This cherry red faille 50s dress lacks the requisite fauxlero, but it does have some mighty fine fin-like seams on the shoulders. (By the way, if you love pockets, these are fabulous. They fold back into huge points.) Check out the detail I'm talking about--the fauxverskirt. See? It's a full skirt that pretends to have a skirt over it.

It's the fauxverskirt!

The difference between a fauxverskirt and an overskirt is sometimes pretty subtle. Here's a dress that's got an overskirt that's not fake.

fauxverskirt in navy taffeta

Regular readers of A Dress a Day are championing a Wear Your Fauxlero Day. You can bet that I'll be there if (or should I say when?) I find the perfect specimen. Oh, and in case you're wondering, I believe it was Deirdre who coined the term fauxlero in the comments section on Erin's blog here. It's a great word, isn't it?

If you find any fauxverskirts, I'd love to see them. Bonus points for fauxleros with fauxverskirts.

Edited to add: Perhaps not a true fauxverskirt, but certainly a demi-fauxverskirt--this one is offered right now on eBay by Jumblelaya. You can click the photo to see the details on this dress.

demi-fauxverskirt

Another fauxverskirt--this one has a corset style waist. The item is available at Magsrags. Technically, it's not a true fauxverskirt. Perhaps we could call this fauxchos? Fauxskort? I don't know what to call it, but it's actually a split skirt from the 60s. The photo is clickable if you want to see more details or buy it.

fauxchos?

Best response to no response? ebay, way

Don't get me wrong, I love vintage clothes, I don't mind paying what they are worth ---- I love history and I love buying those tiny pieces of time in a cloth! However I just have to vent right now about my ebay frustration!!! I bought 3 dresses on ebay. (no name on seller I will vent on my own blog other places) said combined shipping, 3-4 dol per addt'l item. So I purchased. Now the invoice I get says 25.80 for total shipping for 3 lightweight dresses (not formals, lightweight day dresses) she is overcharging by hmmm almost 9 dollars from what org post said. I've sent emails over a 4 day period now. Requesting correct amount. Or at least tell me you've determined this is it period. Don't just not respond. Seller has many many transactions, vintage seller (granted with many stains etc but I noticed they were noted for the most part on feedback) --- but I CAN'T GET HER TO RESPOND TO MY EMAILS. Zero, zip nada one respond! But I'm not just blithely paying her excessive shipping by her lack of response. I did go back further further on and read in the last six months (now that I have experienced no response) she has gotten that complaint six times (doesn't respond comb shipping not correct) She also updated her existing ebay listings as of today ---- to not show 3-4 dollars on each item combined. just generic combined discount. Hmmmm
So what does one do? Pay the hiefer? Gritch on a blog? I suppose decide how badly i want these dresses (they weren't stupendous they were 70's hippie a theme for me at present time) 50's prom? I'd pay it and shutitup:) Sigh. Very unique? Again with the shutup and pay. But they're fairly generic hippie just what appeared to be a decent price, ones I didnt have. hmmm I answered myself. I'm just not excited about those little suckers now. I don't like being misled. and not responded to.
Most of the sellers I've purchased from on ebay? Wonderful, love vintage, know far more than I and great experiences. Sigh. (PS I just loved the above photo, it's gran and she was a hoot) Wish I had her clothes.
Read read and learn learn.
PS Carol thank you for the blog, it's great I love love seeing the amazing stupendous clothes other are lucky to have!

A Day for Shoes

“Grandma was a shopaholic” they said, as they laid out boxes and boxes of shoes and handbags. Some worn, some never used, but all kept neatly in their original boxes, complete with sales receipts.
picture of shoes
The front lawn had been completely blanketed with boxes that morning – all perfect little time capsules in themselves. Some had matching scarves and costume jewelry, waiting for the day to be worn.

It appeared that Grandma had held onto everything she ever purchased, and I could see how her style had changed throughout time. From high-heeled 40's platform shoes to sensible 70's sandals and mules. There were delicate evening clutches with lucite frames as well as large leather Hobo style bags, that would come decades later.

Sadly, most of the clothes had been given away, yet I could still imagine the dresses she would have worn, and how she would have accessorized them.

I gathered up the boxes and filled the car, knowing that what was seen as clutter to the family, will once again be treasured. I think Grandma would be happy to know that.

New Arrivals at Rice and Beans Vintage Including Large Size Vintage Dresses!!

We've got some fantastic New Arrivals at Rice and Beans Vintage, including several Large size Vintage 40's & 50's Dresses! Take a look.

Hello Norma Jeane!

Army photographer David Conover was one of the first photographers to take a photoshoot of Marilyn Monroe, then known as Norma Jeane. His work, including some photos of Norma Jeane, appeared regularly in such military magazines as Yank and Stars and Stripes. Norma Jeane was enthusiastic about her new vocation, and even consented to join Conover on picture-taking excursions through Southern California. After the initial Yank magazine photographic session with Conover, Norma Jeane posed for him on other occasions. As his freelance model, she was paid five dollars an hour.

A commercial photographer named Potter Hueth became interested in Norma Jeane on a professional level after Conover showed him some of his photographs. Hueth asked Norma Jeane if she would be willing to work on "spec." That is, he would shoot some photos of her and then tout them to various magazines, but Norma Jeane would not get paid unless the photos were sold.

Some of Potter Hueth's photographs of Marilyn ended up on the desk of Emmeline Snively, head of the Blue Book Model Agency in Los Angeles. Snively sent Norma Jeane a brochure and expressed interest in using her if she was willing to take Blue Book's three-month modeling course. The photo at the left is from 1945 while Norma was at the Blue Book Modeling Agency. Norma Jeane is wearing a Catalina two piece suit.

In 1946, Norma Jeane's modeling career had taken off, coinciding with the boom in exploitation magazines. Though virtually nonexistent today, these types of publications flooded the market after World War II, particularly after paper rationing ended in 1950. Several types of exploitation magazines appeared on newsstands following the war. Some were devoted to lurid crime stories, others to dimestore romance or Hollywood scandal. A significant number were aimed at men. Contrary to what might be assumed today, the magazines did not include photographs of nudes but displayed women in bathing suits, negligees, towels, and other scanty but tasteful attire. By modern standards, the layouts are amusing, even innocent.

Because Norma Jeane was not the tall, willowy type best suited for fashion modeling, she began to make her mark in pinup magazines such as Laff, Peek, See, Glamorous Models, Cheesecake, and U.S. Camera. A result of the popularity of the pinup during the war, these inexpensive magazines featured the best in cheesecake photography.

Norma Jeane posed for a number of photographers who sold their work to pinup magazines. One of the best of these photographers was André de Dienes, a fine technician gifted with a sensitive eye that enabled him to work with equal success in color and black and white.De Dienes worked with Norma Jeane from 1945 to 1949, capturing her at the peak of her modeling career. Their last session together was a series of seashore photos shot at Tobey Beach in 1949, when Norma Jeane, by that time Marilyn Monroe, was in New York City to promote one of her early films. These images are from that session.

Marilyn Monroe was also a Jantzen model back in the days when she was known as Norma Jean Baker. In 1947 She modeled the Jantzen Double Dare and Temptation suits. The “Double Dare” was a two-piece suit with peek-a-boo cutouts on the hips. She also modeled for Catalina sportswear for advertising and publicity purposes.

In 1986 Backflips landed the rights to Marilyn Monroe for a swimwear and coverup line securing the rights through the Estate Of Marilyn Monroe. We have just acquired one of these 80's suits. It is new old stock with tags and is currently offered in our store. For the Marilyn collector this is a score!

We also offer a wide selection of vintage swimwear from the 20's through the 80's in our vintage swimwear store at glamoursurf.com including some that Marilyn would have looked killer in! Please surf on over and visit us today!
